Students can expect to learn rhythm and lead (solo) guitar in the Blues style, which is the basis for Rock and Blues Rock guitar. I will also show you how these skills can can be applied to other popular genres. Learn how to play the fundamental blues rhythm based on the "I, IV, V" progression and the pentatonic scales to play melodies, lead lines, and solos/improvisation. Lead technique will include slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs, note bends, and vibrato. My approach emphasizes the use of ear training and transcribing by listening to classic songs by the "the masters," the most notable Blues players like BB King, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

I took acoustic guitar lessons with Adam and he was a wonderful teacher. I had little knowledge of the guitar and felt I developed my skills quickly. Adam was patient, nice and came up with fun exercises and song selections. Would highly recommend Adam as a teacher!

Basic out line of blues guitar approach touching on the I IV V progression and pentatonic scales to play lead lines, solos and melodies. Heavy investigation of note bending, breathing and space. Learning to let the notes "breath" and speak is key to good blues.

I started taking guitar lessons from Ryan 2 months ago and he is the first teacher I have stuck to for this long, and more importantly, the longest I have stayed with the instrument! Ryan takes the time to understand my needs and the kind of music I enjoy and tailors the lessons accordingly.

He is incredibly knowledgeable and an awesome guitarist. The lessons are always fun and he is very responsive to any questions I have and encourages sharing musical things I enjoy so he can understand my tastes better.

Very glad to have found Ryan and looking forward to many more lessons with him!

Blues guitar was my first love in music. I'd play lick after lick as I was starting out...and eventually got to play with some very accomplished blues players in the process. Don't want to name drop though. ; )

About Joe

I absolutely love teaching music! After over 20 years of teaching, performing, writing, and recording in all styles/genres, it continues to be a great adventure. It is a joy to pass this on to others...especially seeing my students that never touched the instrument going on to be very proficient

I was first asked to teach blues guitar by a guy I met on a street corner on the Temple Campus. I had never really played blues before that, but I used my knowledge of Ragas to develop a unique approach to the genre which has worked for me very well since I started with it several years ago. For more details, check out my Blues Raga Guitar Series on YouTube through the links on my TakeLessons.com profile.

About Jonathan

I studied music therapy and music theory at Temple University from '06-'10. Learned a lot. Then again, I learned even more teaching at a school for kids with learning disabilities and working as a traveling street performer. "Very patient and informative. Allowed me to ask endless questions. Addressed all my concerns and removed any doubt about this arrangement working specifically for me and my schedule. His studio has a very nice setup and it's simplified. We did a breakdown of my experience and focused on setting realistic goals towards my learning process. More than a "Teacher" of music but a "Professor" of guitar methods! He focused in on getting me comfortable with the most basic of finger techniques, finger placement and familiarized with the sections of the solo lead guitar. After an hour's session my mind was put at ease about my ability to be patient with myself. I was never made to feel awkward or out of my league. This caused me to open up and to really focus. Mr.Cole has a great style and passion towards helping me to soak in as much content as possible. His location is within a community that's family orientated. I look forward to being tutored by Mr.Cole over the course of the next year without any complications."

"I chose to take up the guitar later in life (after retirement). I did not read music nor did I feel that I had any rhythm. William was extremely patient with me and brought me to levels that far exceeded my expectations. William has a rare ability to be able to put a person at ease and reduce their tension level. Sometimes it was through playing and sometimes through playing. He was able to read my apprehension level very well and seemed to always choose the correct method. I moved away from the area and thus far have not found a guitar teacher with the same abilities. Regardless of age or ability, I would recommend William to anyone. Were it not so expensive I would gladly fly back to Phoenix once a week to continue my lessons with William."

"There's guitar teachers and then there's William! Being a classical guitar player himself, he is meticulous and precise when it comes to his instruction. He is exceptional in teaching students how to play guitar the correct way. He formulates his lessons to be student specific, and keeps record of the students progress. With William, you will learn how to crawl before you learn how to run, and you will learn it the right way, and will be a better musician because of his instruction and dedication to his students, which is the backbone to his dedication to music."

Tricks For Differentiating The Two Blues Chord Progressions

Ready to get started with learning blues chord progressions? Here's an intro by Austin, TX guitar teacher Samuel B...   In order to properly respect and understand both the theory and structure of ANY kind of American music, it's essential to be able to play the blues. Although the form is said (by some scholars) to have originated in Africa within the story-telling traditions of village griots (historians/poets/musicians who would play a five-stringed instrument known as the halam, which …

Blues Guitar Basics: How to Play a Blues Shuffle

Ready to learn to play blues guitar? This lesson from guitar teacher James W. is the perfect place to start... What is a shuffle, anyway? A shuffle is a rhythm of 8th notes played in triplets, essentially playing 3/4 time over a 4/4 beat to make the music swing. Blues, pop, jazz, and rock musicians all use the shuffle. The blues shuffle is a fun pattern that is simple to absorb into your playing across many genres of music. Think of pop, rock, big band, and blues as being a part of the s …
