My first lesson with Zach was great! 5 stars. He asked the right questions as to what aI am looking to do. And we quickly came up with a lesson plan that with the right amount of work in my part will get me headed in the right direction. Zach does a great job of making his students feel comfortable and good about their abilities.

Great experience with Zach. I'm still learning how to sing properly, though.

The basics on mandolin through some standard bluegrass tunes. Personally, I'm a fan of all-things Chris Thile (Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers, his solo material, etc...) but it's great to dive into the bluegrass classics to get started!

About Chris

Chris grew up hearing his dad play guitar around the house and at live shows. He “caught the bug” around age 13 and hasn’t stopped playing since! He’s been teaching guitar since 2003 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Music at North Central University in 2008 where he studied jazz, blues, rock, c

My 15 year-old son started guitar this summer. He has truly enjoyed working with Chris. Chris is patient and encouraging, as well as being a cool guy that my son looks up to.

My 13-years old son was reluctant to take music lessons. He had not liked piano (with a different instructor) when he was younger, but agreed to try guitar. Since the first trial lesson, he has been excited to learn more!

Chris is a fun teacher who knows his stuff and who communicates well with both his students and their parents. I have three kids and have found it’s difficult to find a teacher who is responsive to parents + engaging with youth + gifted at music.

His rates are very reasonable for our area. His in-home lesson space is professional and comfortable — I get to sit on a comfy couch and get work done during my son’s weekly lesson. In addition, Chris goes above and beyond to make sure the lessons are meeting our expectations. He tracked down strings for us when we accidentally broke one. He has rescheduled lessons due to our busy schedules. He is genuinely kind and such a pleasure to work with — we couldn’t be more thrilled!
Brian
Our kids have loved working with Chris. He picks songs they're excited to play, teaches them patiently, and has a lot of fun with them. They've made a ton of progress since they started with Chris, and they're always excited to see him!

I've been teaching mandolin for 4 years helping students develop a love for the instrument and learn more about music along the way. Mandolin is an often underappreciated instrument which is fantastic for both melodic and rhythmic playing styles. Within the first few lessons you'll have a solid base of strumming, picking, chord changes and melodic playing, with a couple simple songs too. Moving on from there I will craft lessons to move you toward a "goal song," making sure to cater your progress to your needs while keeping a focus on good technique. I enjoy working with students of all ages and experiences and I can't wait to meet you!

About Ryan

Ryan is a musician from Jefferson Park who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. Learning to play instruments is one of the true pleasures in his life and he hopes

Great first lesson! Ryan broke down into very digestible parts both the history of the banjo and how a beginner should approach the banjo from the very start. Well done!

This was my first lesson with Nick. He is a very nice guy. He created a calm, relaxed atmosphere in his studio, and he was clear when he gave me particular instructions. His knowledge of music theory in general, and of the five-string banjo in particular, was quite impressive. I would recommend him highly to both a beginner and to anyone (like myself) who is in need of a refresher course. I am very much looking forward to my next lesson.

Nick Russo is a fantastic tutor for kids and adults who would like to learn Ukulele, guitar, banjo or other instruments. He makes ‘learning fun’ he's friendly and cheerful. I don’t have any background in music but, Nick made it easy for me to understand the notes and how it works. I always look forward to every lesson. I Highly recommended Nick to everyone.
Bill
I’ve been taking guitar lessons with Nick now for a few months and it’s been a terrific experience — cannot say enough good things. Each lesson builds on the last and Nick tailors them to my ability and musical interests mixing in enough music theory, which makes learning both productive and enjoyable. Most importantly I feel like I’m beginning to understand how music works and not just blindly memorizing patterns or scales. I considered online courses before choosing Nick, but there’s no substitution for one-to-one instruction. Nick’s feedback and instruction are invaluable.

I was a little concerned about trying to pick up guitar in my early 40s, but its been a rewarding experience so far and I’m looking forward to more lessons with Nick.

Mandolin is a delightful instrument to study and is a great addition if you are already a guitarist or a singer looking to accompany themselves in unique ways. As with my guitar lessons, I design a student's curriculum to fit each individual's needs and desires. I can teach reading and music theory, but also get you strumming along to your favorite songs or learning how to flatpick basic bluegrass tunes. My goal with any instrumental lessons is to get a student to think for themselves on their instrument through a balance of ear training and functional knowledge of the instrument.

About Chris

Are you interested in being able to confidently play lead and rhythm parts in a band? Want to learn to write songs? Want to learn to just strum along to your favorite records by yourself? I will teach you or your child all of the knowledge and tools needed to do whatever your dream is on your instr

I came to Chris with no knowledge on how to play guitar and he helped me develop great habits and start playing. He was very flexible with scheduling and even came to my place multiple times. I recommend Chris to anyone ready to get into guitar it was a fantastic experience.

I really enjoy my lessons with Chris and find them to be a great help in developing my guitar skills as a beginner. Many people have talent but I feel few are also equipped to teach their talent, I feel Chris does a great job at both.

Mr. Sylvester is one of the greatest. He is not just an amazing guitarist, but he is also very kind. He treats people with so much respect. He speaks to me and my mom so nicely. He is very patient. He has a deep knowledge of music and knows how to get the most out of even the least talented people (like me!). He doesn't ever get mad if you make a mistake or forget to bring your music notes. We were so lucky to find Mr. Sylvester.

Mark is a talented musician who plays and teaches multiple stringed instruments. His lessons are always informative and supportive. They are driven by the student’s interest, so anything you want o learn— styles of music, how to do a particular technique, music theory— you can bring to class. And every now and then he organizes a recital— terrifying but great practice!

How to Play The Mandolin for Beginners: 5 Steps to Get Started

So you want to learn how to play the mandolin. For beginners to playing an instrument, the mandolin is a great option for starting your musical journey. Many people ask, "Is the mandolin easy to play?" or "Is it hard to play the mandolin?" Fortunately, the mandolin is not a difficult instrument to learn. It’s lightweight and compact so you can practice anywhere. It also has less strings than many other instruments, like the guitar, which makes reading tablature much easier. The mand …
