Private Tuba Teacher

I have taught brass students for 25 years including trumpet, euphonium, trombone, french horn, and tuba. If you are starting or taking the next steps in your tuba playing I would love to help.

About Mike

I have had an exciting time learning the trumpet! Growing up I always enjoyed music and especially playing the trumpet, but I was always a mediocre and unreliable player. In between my junior and senior years of high school I went through the difficulty of an embouchure change. Though I struggled f

I have been teaching for 10 years in private lessons, music camps, and music clinics in Michigan and the metro DC area. I so enjoy teaching brass students how to gain better control of their musical expression through honing skills in technique, emoting, and general music knowledge. I can assist in preparing for play tests, auditions, solo performances and overall gaining a better grasp of any literature or method material. More than that I love coming together to enjoy playing music and growing as players. I am in awe hearing musical voices develop and become more articulate in expressing how they see the world through music.
A bit about myself, I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in music. I also attended Eastern Michigan University for three years before transferring to Penn State where I finished my degree. I teach trumpet, trombone, and tuba for beginner and intermediate levels and euphonium (B.C. & T.C.) (baritone T.C., baritone B.C.) for all

Jeanette is an excellent teacher, and knows how to tailor the learning experience to let you get the most out of your time! I started learning baritone in order to participate in an event with my friends and Jeanette’s teaching really helped me move forward quickly so that I could gain enough skills to participate and then keep learning after. Not only were lessons highly professional and helpful, she is also a really fun teacher who made each lesson really enjoyable while keeping me on track. I highly recommend her as a teacher!
Mike
One of the most dedicated musicians I know. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing her play for years and I’m sure she can help any student reach their goals, regardless of what level they start at.
Chip
I have been playing euphonium for decades, and I still play in community bands. I recently worked with JJ, and she noticed a small detail in my embouchure that had never been noticed by previous teachers. She quickly corrected it in terms I could easily understand, and my high range has become much more consistent with better tone. It just goes to show, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I would definitely recommend her.

I enjoy nurturing musical creativity in my
students.

It is Rapturous for me when a student realizes
their own musicality by going past just
playing the notes on the page, to actively
expressing the Message (which could be a
Thought, Emotion, or a Scene) that is
inherent in the piece.

In a Low Brass lesson, I have the student play:
-A quick and effective warm-up with me.
-A quick review of their assigned
technical exercises.
-Their assigned Etude or Chart or Solo.
-A Duet with Me.

Technical aspects of Performance:
1. A mastery of ability to Sight Sing.
2. Clean Articulation.
3. A wide (and well-sounding) Range.
4. Moving between partials is Flexible.
5. A beautiful Tone.

I wish for my students to become more than
just good instrumentalists, I want for them
to always have fun with music. When a
student realizes that music can ultimately be
Emotional and Creative Outlet for them,
they will be Musicians for life!

About Scott

I am a Bass Trombonist, but teach all brass instruments. I have been teaching for 20 years. I help my students build their Tone, Technique and Articulation by teaching a simple Warm-Up routine. I have written an 8-page eBook entitled "Optimal Brass Playing" that describes ten areas of best practi

Mr. Scott really is a nice person to meet. For my first voice lessons, He helped me identify what range I was comfortable with and introduced a few of his works that opened my perspective on reading music. He knows how to teach his material if you specify what exactly you want to accomplish.
Mike
Scott is someone who expertly emphasizes both the fundamentals of trombone playing and musicianship. I have had the opportunity to read his melodious etudes arrangements with him and his arrangements are expertly crafted to force the performers to work on listening, phrasing, intonation and sound quality all in one fell swoop. Scott's attitude is very warm and not condescending in the slightest. He is very positive while always encouraging the player to grow. If you are a low brass player who wants a deeper understanding on the intricacies of low brass performance and overall musicianship, you should absolutely give Scott a try.

I am a professional musician based out of the Washington D.C. area. I am currently a tuba player in The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own."

I believe that having fun, being able to clearly share your musical ideas with others, and being a well-rounded person are an integral to being a musician.

Every student has different goals and desires and I strive to create a specifically tailored course of study with each of my students.

Whether you are just starting out, or are an advanced player, I would be happy to work with you!

"My brother took lessons from Mr. Talley before me, and when I got into Band I started too.  Thanks to Mr. Talley I  made 1st chair in the Region Band twice on Tuba.  When I switched to Euphonium in high school, he was right there helping me with the change from Tuba.  I made the Region Band again on a new instrument only a few weeks after I switched, and he was the reason why.  He always seemed to know exactly what I needed to do to get better.  Even now, years later, I can still call him any time and ask him about music and he always helps me."

"I had Jeremy as a tuba instructor my last year of college. I was a bit skeptical since he looked so young, but after my first few lessons with him, I realized what a valuable teacher I had. He was very supportive, and instead of making me feel like a failure in my mistakes, gave me the instruction and tools necessary to succeed. I wish my time with him had been longer, but I loved the short time we did work together."
