I play and teach a variety of percussion instruments, including hand drums (congas, tubano, djembe, bongos), xylophone and other toned percussion, shaker-type instruments, tambourine, guiro, etc. Percussion instruments are a great way to introduce very young children to playing music. In the past, I taught music classes to toddlers and preschoolers, with an emphasis on percussion. I have also taught percussion to teens and adults.
*** Travel Equipment *** I do not typically provide any equipment - but I am willing to select and purchase books for the students to learn from (cost of books to be reimbursed by the student/parent) when requested to do so.
I am also willing to provide stick-on note-names for the keyboard, for young children.

As a writer, his work has been published in Phoenix New Times and Modern Drummer, and his new children's drum book, Wee Beats, Wee Eats, is set for release in 2018. And also is an accomplished DJ.
Benard also co-scored the 2012 feature-length documentary, The Immigration Paradox, with Tobie Milford. *** Lesson Details *** Students who study with me can expect for their guitar, drum kit, percussion, or piano lessons to be top-quality, personalized, and above all, extremely fun sessions that will cater to the students musical backgrounds, interests, and needs. I create extremely organized and specifically focused lessons so that students feel comfortable, not pressured, while learning their craft. The lessons I teach are a combination of developmental sight reading music, learning student chosen songs (depending on ability), inspiring and encouraging creative abilities, warm-up and strengthening exercises, proper techniques, listening for internal hearing, composition dynamics, chords, finger-picking (guitar only) and rudiments (drum kit only).
After 3 months of lessons together, students will have started learning several key elements to becoming an outstanding musician. They will have learned proper form and technique, warm-up/skill-building exercises, to read basic notation, and basic rhythms/rudiments. Guitar/Piano students will be able to play at least one song utilizing both melody and chords. For drum kit/percussion, students should have no problem reading basic drum beats and being able to play through a simple song. With proper, steady practice, most students will achieve much more. I also focus on creative thinking, professionalism, and instrument tuning. Finally, the students will have started to develop a solid level of discipline that is required of any aspiring human being! I have found YouTube to be an indispensable tool for this, and my students have responded very well. I will work on snare drum technique as well, because it is the primary voice on the set, and the touch and nuance required to play it well relate to the set as well. I will tailor my instruction to suit the student's learning style and preferences. I want to make the learning fun, so I will help the student quickly gain the basic skills to play along with their favorite bands. This promotes musicality as well as solid time. It will also aid in transcription, which will come with development and is a valuable tool. I will use this in tandem with technique-building exercises to form a well rounded musician. I believe that a student should have a familiarity with his/her instrument, so we will also go over the anatomy and tuning of the set. Above all, music should be fun!

I pretty much teach all common areas of percussion. These include timpani, drum set, marching percussion, mallet percussion, concert percussion, and some world percussion.
Alex was born May 31, 1987. Since both of his parents were band directors, he grew up in a very musically inclined family. When he was 15 years old, during his freshman year of high school, he started studying percussion. A year later he began studying under Chad Kohler and continued to do so until 2009. During spring semester of 2009 he studied briefly under Richard Walker at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In the fall of that year he then transferred to Butler University for an academic year and studied under Craig Hetrick and Jon Crabiel.
Beginning in 2011 Alex began studying attending University of Indianapolis and is currently studying under Paul Berns as well as Art Reiner. In addition to studying with them he has also went back to continue to study with his mentor Chad Kohler. In the time since Alex gr
aduated high school, he has been continuously presented with teaching opportunities. At the time, though, music was not looking like the best course of action for him. With the aid of Chad Kohler, Alex then began getting more involved with teaching percussion. Alex eventually went on to arranging his own parts for his students, as well as composing original percussion ensemble pieces. Alex is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Music Technology at IUPUI.
In the time since he has been out of high school, he has taught at a number of schools including the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center, North Putnam Jr./Sr. High School, Broad Ripple Magnet School for the Arts & Humanities, and Lawrence Central. He has also taught at Arlington High School and Short Ridge High School.
When it comes to teaching music, what is known to be as the “Holy Trinity” comes to mind. While teaching I personally believe that it is important to challenge students just enough so that they are not discouraged and are still able to have fun.
The Holy Trinity plays a big role in this. What it consists of is embracing your students from all angles. This would be from ensembles and private lessons, which in turn then encourage them to practice. Ensemble, private lessons, and practicing are the three main categories that make up the “Holy Trinity.” And in using this, you can also be more involved with your students as well. It is always a good idea be friend your students as well and not just be the “teacher.” There is a great quote that goes like this, “They will never care about how much you know, until they know how much you care.” In which case has been proven to be very true time and time again.
It is important as a teacher to be able to inspire your students and to encourage them. Which is why I think it is important to be a good friend as well to your students. This way a kind of trust is formed and in turn can easily lead to the success of a music program. Also I do believe that it is important to expose students to as many forms of music as possible. This way they are not just stuck in one kind of mind set and if they choose to go into music for their career, then they have many different experiences they can pull and relate from. Plus they will also have some more knowledge of different cultures and music genres that can help not only create better music but also be more overall worldly in their personal life out side of music. Being able to learn about music is very important, and can easily impact a student’s life in many different ways that most subjects just do not have the capability to. This is what I believe about learning music and why I also love to teach it. I want my students to be able to have all the same great experiences I have had and more. Which is why I personally believe so heavily in a good music education.
*** Lesson Details *** Although the approach to teaching that I use comes across as being pretty laid back, I do expect what some might consider to be a lot out of my students. This is because I want to make sure that my students will be successful as musicians.
While a student is studying with me; they will learn about percussion from multiple angles. They will learn and be able to understand many basic music theory terms and principles. They will also learn how each percussion instrument is tied to one another in technique and how to easily transition from instrument to instrument.
Depending on the age of the student, after about three months of studying with me, the student will know a few major scales, most of the standard American rudiments, and some basic drum set concepts. After 6 months, the student will know all 12 major scales, be familiar with all 40 snare drum rudiments, and know a good portion of basic drum set.
Please keep in mind that results may vary depending on the age of the student and the amount of practicing they do on their own. Results also depend upon whether or not they are practicing correctly, which is something they will also learn how to do with me.
*** Studio Equipment *** In-studio lessons in basement with acoustic drum set. Street parking or drive way. Seating available for parents.
Lessons at the High School will be in the band room with their equipment.

Alex is Very knowledgeable. He was great with my 13-year-old daughter. She learns a lot from him and really enjoys working with him. He is very good teacher and very patient. I like the fact that he gives her specific homework to work on. I look forward to working with him for a long time.
Have played many different percussion over the years. The trip to Brazil helped with Samba and other percussion. Three years with Holland America Line put it into use, along with drum set.
An online Masters Jazz program from University of Arkansas at Monticello, (2018-2019) these studies will help students understand various Jazz, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban drum patterns.
I attended Wright State University for two (2) years studying Music , and then transferred to Belmont University to receive a Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance. A Masters of Music from Eastern Kentucky University will help overall General music and creative studies.
I also studied at the Eastman School of Music, learning Creative Music Making and African drum studies.
I attended University of Dayton for Percussion, Music Technology, & World music, and different Samba schools in Salvador/Rio, Brazil for Samba studies.

As a young self-taught musician, he shared the stage with some of the most distinguished musicians in the region, performing throughout Palestine and Western Europe with the Edward Said Conservatory, Alkamandjati Association, Manfred Leuchter, Kudsi Erguner, among others. In 2008, he received the Al-Qattan Foundation Music Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, receiving a degree in Percussion Performance with highest honors. Tareq’s studies brought him into a deep dialogue with many styles of music including jazz, Afro-Cuban, Carnatic Indian, and Brazilian - traditions which he continues to build upon and incorporate into his performing and teaching. Since Berklee, Tareq has performed with some of the most innovative names in modern music
, including Jack deJohnette, Aaron Goldberg, Billy Drewes, Javier Limón, Pepe de Lucía, Daniel Schnyde, Simon Shaheen, Sonia Mbarek, and many other virtuous musicians, composers and ensembles. A dedicated educator, he has developed a wide body of pedagogical work, offering master classes, workshops and private lessons throughout the world in collaboration with Simon Shaheen's Arabic Music Retreat, Boston College, Brandeis University, The Center for Arabic Culture, NAFDA, among others. Tareq lives in New York City and performs throughout the world.

Tareq is awesome!!! I studied with him for two years. He's a great musician and a great teacher. I loved taking private and group percussion classes with him.
I have been a musician for 29yrs. with Alto Sax being my Primary Instrument. Being a Woodwind player I also play Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion. I have performed in many large/medium/small venues with many Bands and Ensembles throughout my career. I have also, been a Georgia Certified Teacher, member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and member of the Music Educators National Conference for 14yrs. Most recently as an educator in Clayton County I performed with other musicians at a County production of "The Wiz".
I have lead others and taught them before ever having my own classroom as a leader in High School and College. It has greatly pleased me that my students have had many accomplishments in many groups. These vary from various Honors Bands, the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra, and many High Valued Scholarships. ds. Initially (and throughout) I place a high value on performance fundamentals. I start with a focus on proper posture and breathing. Once this can be executed I breakdown the nomenclature of the student's instrument, how to put it together and break it down. Next the focus becomes proper grip for mallets/sticks and embouchure placement for winds. Students then begin to develop a proper "buzz" and "coo" and "roll" for their selected instrument as they work on basic notes for some time. Eventually this playing short 3 note songs and then 5 note songs etc. Progress for mastery is constantly checked.
In my classroom transdisciplinary is innate to my teach style. I teach all skills in my class using many methods including but, not limited to the following: Clapping, singing, stomping, writing, modeling, syllables (math), one-on-one Beginning players usually start with a short Assessment of their knowledge of music. We will spend a lot of time thorughout their experience on Tone, Intonation, Technique, Range, and Style using various styles. Experienced players usually start with a short Assessment of their knowledge of music. A high focus of our Studio time will be spent developing Music/Solos etc. they are already preparing for Honors groups, High School and College.
