I teach fiddle lessons primarily by ear as I think it's important to retain the aural tradition. My specialty is Irish and Scottish styles, but I also love Quebecois and Cape Breton tunes. I grew up playing Old Time and Bluegrass and have a solid foundation in those styles as well.

We'll learn repertoire and work on developing a stylistically appropriate technique (bowing, groove, lilt, ornaments).

Learning chords and how to provide basic accompaniment can be a fun and empowering approach as well!

About Emily

A product of fiddle camps, late night jam sessions, and extensive Bach technique, Emily is at the forefront of an emerging scene of contemporary violin players. A third generation Southern California native, Emily was drawn to the violin almost immediately upon discovering its existence, and has on

I teach beginner bluegrass fiddle using an approach designed to help students be able to learn both by ear and with sheet music, and to prepare to play with other musicians or attend bluegrass jams, as well as play with good technique and posture. I teach children age 6 and older, and adults, and welcome adult beginners. Students can choose to work from either the book The American Fiddle Method Volume 1 by Brian Wicklund or You Can Teach Yourself Fiddling by Craig Duncan.

About Margaret

Margaret was very professional and patient with my 7 year old.

This was my first lesson but she helped me correct the mistakes I was making holding the fiddle and the bow, and she is very encouraging while I am learning to play and still making not so pretty sounds. She made me feel comfortable making mistakes and I was not nervous at all. I'm looking forward to my next lesson.

Margaret is kind and supportive, and I look forward to more lessons with her!

I teach both old-time American and traditional Irish fiddle, hewing closely to the older traditional styles I myself perform. You can expect to learn the basic of fiddle-playing (based on good violin technique, including how to hold the instrument properly and how to achieve a good tone), bowing, phrasing, ornaments, and other tricks of the trade. I can teach both from music and by ear.

"Josie has been an amazing to my teenage son. He is 13 and loves fiddle, but we don't have any teachers in our rural farming community. Josephine has helped him strengthen his playing using songs that he knows as well as introducing him to new Celtic tunes that he is really excited about. She's also teaching him to personalize his playing with the use of ornaments. We are all really happy with his online lessons. Thanks, Josie!"

"Peter is very patient and exceptionally knowledgeable. He is very analytical in his teaching. I am a new student (only a few lessons) and I am confident he will be able to provide the critical but positive instruction and encouragement that I need. His enthusiasm and passion for music is contagious. In fact, he gives detailed oral histories and music theory explanations related to the topic of the lesson. Most teachers boot you out when time is up - not Peter - he always finishes on the right note. Plus he has an adorable cat assistant, Rory, as a side kick."

What's the Difference Between the Violin and Fiddle?

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin. …
