Percussion instruments are great! The percussion section has many unique instruments you can learn. I am so excited to teach you more about the percussion instruments. One of the most talented musicians I have ever met. While trombone is his main instrument, he plays and instructs exceptionally well on a myriad of other instruments. He is calm and patient with learners and has a very rich knowledge base when it comes to musical literature and technique. I highly recommend Justin Hammis for anyone interested in private lessons.

I teach how to read rhythms and how to groove!

About Mike

I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of

Mike taught Leo in person before the pandemic started and has been doing online lessons with him for the past eight months. He is amazing with both. Leo has a very short attention span, but a deep love for music. Mike has been able to hold Leo’s attention every week for over a year — even during online lessons. Leo has become an awesome little pianist, and has developed a love for the piano. It has given him the ability to express all of his feelings and has helped his attention span for his schoolwork. Mike has so much patience, and always inquires about Leo’s favorite activities. He is great with kids and makes them feel so comfortable. Leo loves his “booming voice” and the free play blues music they get to play together every lesson.

Rainice has helped me grow tremendously as a musician and develop a greater appreciation for percussion. I've studied with her for two years now and she is always super welcoming and positive in her approach. Rainice has helped me organize my audition preparation, overcome various technical issues I was having--especially on auxiliary percussion and marimba, and develop a better ear which has been particularly helpful for playing in orchestral settings. She has also given me lots of helpful advice based on her experiences in the field. Highly recommend!

My experience as a performer and teacher spans over 25 years of just about every musical style the involves percussion. I believe in creating an environment that is focused on playing music well and where the student can have fun while gaining confidence. It is important to develop functional musicians with good technique, reading, time, and listening skills. We can cover all percussion instruments from drum set to mallet instruments (marimba, timpani, etc.) to hand percussion in every style of music from early music Renaissance music to world percussion and today's rock/pop, including jazz.

About Mariano

My experience as a performer and teacher ranges from early music to today's rock and pop, including various percussion instruments from around the world. When studying for my bachelors and masters degrees in music, I did course work in music recording, jazz studies, and music history. In addition,

Mariano is excellent! He is firm yet patient and professional, and gets along really well with my son.
Emma
Mariano was an amazing percussion and drum set teacher. His lessons were engaging and productive, and he was always able to communicate an idea or musical concept in a way that I was able to understand and connect with. After about 2 years of lessons I was accepted into the Orange County School of the Arts for percussion and I owe my success to the lessons I took with Mariano. I continued lessening throughout high school and my skill level contined to grow. What I loved about Mariano's teaching was his unique ability to take very simple exercises and make them more difficult and therefore much more beneficial. Along with stressing the importance of basic technique, he would constantly inteoduce me to new things - Afro beats, traditional grip, Latin beats, new ways to sight read, and 4 mallet marimba technique. I would highly suggest taking lessons with Mariano if you are looking for a fun, encouraging teacher who has lots of experience with a variety of percussion performance!

"My 11 year old son lost his drum teacher, and we found TakeLessons online. The hardest part is choosing a teacher because many are all top notch 5-Star rated. I picked Tracy D. seemingly at random!

What a lucky draw it turned out to be. Tracy is a real pro, with a great personality. It took my son less than a few minutes before he was comfortable, having fun, and learning new things (he has 1 year experience).

I’ve been a part time musician for over 40 years, and I can tell you when I meet someone that is a true professional musician and the right person to teach my son. That is this exceptional woman."

"Chi's level of talent for performing is matched by her excellent teaching. Her teaching style is very down-to-earth and concrete, allowing for quick improvement during her lesson. Chi gives some of the best quality lessons, whether you're working on triangle technique or preparing for a competition. Her lessons also encouraged me to experiment and think critically about sound production. "Try this" is a common phrase you will hear."
