For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis. I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham. I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system. Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc.... The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Laura has taught throughout her musical career and loves nothing better than to introduce students of all ages to the magic of creating their own music! As a teacher, she focuses on balancing inspiration and explanation. Inspiration: because if you don’t love your music, what’s the point? And technique: because if it’s easy to play and sounds good, you’ll keep coming back for more!
Laura has a BA in Violin Performance and a minor in American Roots Music from Berklee School of Music, has taught privately for ten years, and plays in the nationally touring Appalacian Celtic Rock band Tuatha Dea. Laura has taken firsts in her age division at several fiddle contests, including the California and Nevada Oldtime Fiddle State Champions, Western Open Championships and top 5 in the National Oldtime Fiddle Championships.
*** Studio Equipment
*** I provide sheet music for new tunes, stickers, and I keep on hand a basic fix-it kit for common instrument issues. I also try to keep backup books and a shoulder rest around at my studios so if someone forgets their equipment we can still make good use of the lesson.
I expect the student to provide their instrument, shoulder rest, binder and sheet protectors for loose pages, blank notebook, and any supplementary books we may need. I don't require lots of books - just ones you'll use!
*** Online Supplies*** I keep downloadable pdfs and links on my personal website so they're handy whenever you need them.
*** Specialties *** I love teaching oldtime, bluegrass, country and celtic fiddle - most of what I do as a performer fits in along those lines. I teach Suzuki method violin as well. My Suzuki teacher learned directly from Shinichi Suzuki!
I encourage all my students to improvise, to try different musical styles, and to experiment with composition. My goals are to share my own love for music, and enable students to discover their unique musical voice.
Very professional and innovative techniques that guarantee success!

Laura has been a great teacher for my 6 year-old daughter (starting taking lessons when she was 5). She is endlessly patient and has a perfect balance of fun and instruction in all her lessons. She helped us every step of the way--picking out the right rental instrument, finding extra workbooks that would be fun, coming up with ways to make practicing at home enticing. Laura is made to be a fiddle teacher--she has a obvious passion both for the music and sharing it with her students. My daughter left every lesson with Laura beaming with pride. I'd recommend anyone searching for a teacher to go with Laura!

Mel is a great teacher and his many past experiences in the music field have given him tons of knowledge. he has a simple and effective way of teaching music and theory. he listens to the way you learn and adapts his methods to best suit you.
The violin sings, but the fiddle dances. Or so the old saying goes! In teaching fiddle, I love to bring essential violin technique together with the various styles of diverse music. In the first few lessons we'll explore the style of fiddle you'd like to play and create a path towards that sound. As time goes on, you'll be ready to jump into a bluegrass jam circle, start a ceili or shred like Lindsey Stirling! The direction you take is up to you, and I'm excited to help you meet your goals!
At 5 years old I was struck by the incredible beauty of Vivaldi's music, and ever since I've been playing violin. I hold a BA from Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences, won a scholarship to the Baroque Performance Institute in 2005 and attended the BPI again in 2006. Apart from teaching, as a professional musician performing in Southern California I am well versed both in classical violin and various fiddle styles ranging from bluegrass, Celtic and old-time to rock, pop and blues. I also play viola and mandolin and write music.
A fun and informative lesson. Looking forward to the next one.

Elias is great! My daughter is 7 and this was her first exposure to violin lessons. She loves Elias, says how patient and nice he is, and can’t wait for her next lesson each week. I highly recommend him!
"Mel is a great listener. My first lesson was great."
"Excellent teacher, superb fiddler."
"Bryan is a wonderful player, teacher, and person. He is patient and methodical.
I highly recommend Bryan!"
"Awesome teacher and fiddle player. Very talented, patient and great vibes!!"
"Juliana has been providing lessons for so long that she has an answer for all of my questions, and has the patience of a saint. I didn’t start playing the
fiddle until later on in my fifties so it’s very reassuring to have her as my go to for any problems."
"Great teaching! Excellent service with recordings and sheet music!"
"Laura is a natural teacher- she is able to identify strengths and needs and come up with steps to improve weak areas and also ideas on how to build on the
strengths. What I value most about the lessons that I take with her is that she seems undaunted by my inability to grasp something and just comes up with another approach to help me. She is flexible and a master of many styles of fiddle playing. She can work with anyone from beginning to accomplished; child to senior citizen. I look forward to each lesson."
"Sam was awesome - is a wealth of knowledge and skill and had so much to share. I will definitely be going back for many more lessons!"
"He is very good with me. I'm not a very good student. I have bad habits and I'm overly sensitive to criticism, yet he has not made me feel bad at all abou
t my playing if you want to call it that. I also have a short attention span and can't read music fluently. But his patience is much appreciated, and each week get a little better at it all. I recommend him to those trying their best to sound a little better."
Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians.
So what's the answer?
When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin.
