Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.
He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

*** Specialties *** I teach Latin percussion, conga drums, timbales, bongos and assorted African and Brazilian percussion as well. I teach what is called the "Cuban" method of learning how to play as it is taught in Cuba today, along with my own developed methods. Yes I teach online.
I play and teach a variety of percussion instruments, including hand drums (congas, tubano, djembe, bongos), xylophone and other toned percussion, shaker-type instruments, tambourine, guiro, etc. Percussion instruments are a great way to introduce very young children to playing music. In the past, I taught music classes to toddlers and preschoolers, with an emphasis on percussion. I have also taught percussion to teens and adults.
*** Travel Equipment *** I do not typically provide any equipment - but I am willing to select and purchase books for the students to learn from (cost of books to be reimbursed by the student/parent) when requested to do so.
I am also willing to provide stick-on note-names for the keyboard, for young children.
The students must have their own instruments, and provide a folder for sheet music and notes/instructions.

I came to the United States to pursue my academic career in music and graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2007, majoring in Professional Music. My coursework included Music Theory, Music Technology, and Music Business as well as other related professional music courses. My practical experience included private lessons with internationally renowned drummers such as Dave Dicenso, Kenwood Denard, and Mike Mangini. Additionally, my hands-on classes included Rudimental Labs, Drum Labs, Fusion Labs, Studio Drumming Lab, Contemporary Applications for Percussion, and Afro-Cuban Drumming. Through this broad curriculum, I have expanded my cultural understanding of music.

a highly professional drum teacher and have been instructing students of all ages and levels informatively and creatively. Students under my teaching methods are engaged with numerous styles of music and cultures, and develop gradually while achieving excellent music and performance skills.
*** Lesson Details *** In general, and depending on the student requirements, I teach drum rudiments, music notation, a range of styles, drum tuning and setup. As part of my method, I divide my class/lesson into four sections, which begins with warm ups and proceed with drum rudiments and coordination. I devote the second portion of the lesson to reading and playing orchestral snare drum pieces, and in the third section, students practice different types of rhythms. In these lessons, as well as in private classes, I use drum-method books such as Joel Rothman's Mini-Monster Book of Rock Drumming by Joel Rothman (Fort Lauderdale, Fla: J.R. Publications, 1981), Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin (New York: Jim Chapin, 1971), Ted Reed’s Progressive steps to syncopation for the modern drummer (Van Nuys, California: Alfred, 1996), as well as many music charts. In the last portion of the session, I engage students in an open discussion about their progress, improvements and goals.

During my lessons, I teach drum rudiments, how to read drums’ musical notation, various rhythm styles such as rock, funk, shuffle, and drum tuning and setup. I divide my classes into four sections beginning with warm ups, which included drum rudiments and coordination; the second portion of the class is devoted to reading and playing orchestral snare drum piece, and in the third section, students are practicing various rhythms, where I included books such as Mini-Monster Book Of Rock Drumming by Joel Rothman, Four way coordination by Jim Chapin as well as various music sheets. Ronen really rocks! He is terrific with my son who can tend to have a short attention span and be fidgety. His explainations of the lessons are clear for my son comprehend and he is very patient. Michael graduated from the prestigious Music Education Program and Psychology Program at Ithaca College in 2012. Ithaca gave him the incredible opportunity to hone in on his musicianship and compositional skills. He was also able to discover a new medium of composition, film composition. Michael immediately fell in love with the art of writing music for film and was able to make his first musical debut on a film directed by Mike Blaney. In his time at Ithaca College, he composed scores for multiple films and continues to maintain an active composition career. Michael is currently finishing as a music teacher Brooklyn Scholars Charter School (BSCS) and Music Content Leader for National Heritage Academies (NHA) New York Branch. Born in Jerusalem, Tareq began playing Middle Eastern percussion at age twelve. As a young self-taught musician, he shared the stage with some of the most distinguished musicians in the region, performing throughout Palestine and Western Europe with the Edward Said Conservatory, Alkamandjati Association, Manfred Leuchter, Kudsi Erguner, among others. In 2008, he received the Al-Qattan Foundation Music Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, receiving a degree in Percussion Performance with highest honors. Tareq’s studies brought him into a deep dialogue with many styles of music including jazz, Afro-Cuban, Carnatic Indian, and Brazilian - traditions which he continues to build upon and incorporate into his performing and teaching. Since Berklee, Tareq has performed with some of the most innovative names in modern music
, including Jack deJohnette, Aaron Goldberg, Billy Drewes, Javier Limón, Pepe de Lucía, Daniel Schnyde, Simon Shaheen, Sonia Mbarek, and many other virtuous musicians, composers and ensembles. A dedicated educator, he has developed a wide body of pedagogical work, offering master classes, workshops and private lessons throughout the world in collaboration with Simon Shaheen's Arabic Music Retreat, Boston College, Brandeis University, The Center for Arabic Culture, NAFDA, among others. Tareq lives in New York City and performs throughout the world.
Yoo this Dude is the real deal. I had a great experience studying with him, Tareq is an extremely talented musician and teacher. He helped me a lot with my Cajon playing. Seeing him perform will keep you motivated. He has some crazy hand and finger techniques from all that Arabic drumming.

"When you are looking for a good music instructor, these are the things you have to consider. 1. Price, 2. Location, 3. Teacher's experiences (resume), a
nd 4. Characters of the instructor. The first three are easy to recognize from online information. The last one is hard to get, and yet , for us, the most important factor. Many instructors teach lessons only as a job (for money). They do things only during their "paid time." However, taking music lessons need more than that. A true music educator takes every opportunity to see the potentials of the student, knows how to coach individuals, and build up each student with encouragement and sometimes, discipline. He not only teach weekly lesson to help improved my son's skills, he also do extra to encourage students to go to concert, summer camp and perform at the nursing home. Every year, he arranged every details of a free concert with flyer, communications, equipment and even a professional cameraman! He did all those to encourage students to get out there to perform.
