About Edwin
Hello! Thank you for your interest in taking guitar/piano/music lessons.

I am a professional teacher/studio musician/performer/producer with over 20 years of private teaching experience and a graduate of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program in 2002 specializing in the guitar.

I am available to teach guitar(acoustic, electric, classical) for all levels, ages, and styles(pop to folk, rock to soul, world to classical) in English, Spanish and Japanese.

Other subjects taught include bass guitar, piano/keyboard, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, harmonium, classical percussion, music theory, composition(all styles from pop to classical), ear training, and studio production/engineering/mixing.

Born in Cali, Colombia on April 1979, I began my musical endeavors studying the piano at the age of 6. Early on I had the opportunit
y to play percussion in the school symphony while at the same time developed an intense interest in the instrument that would become my true love, the guitar.

During 1996-98 I studied jazz guitar at the New World School of the Arts music program under the direction of J.B. Dyas and Dr. Roby George. Upon graduation, I was immediately accepted to the University of Miami jazz guitar program under the direction of Randall Dollahan. It was during this time that I also refined my skills as a classical guitarist and as a composer/arranger. In addition, I began passing my knowledge onto friends and eventually began working as a teacher.

My ability to play almost any genre of music is the fruit of past experience playing with an impressive variety of music groups, including jazz combos, symphony orchestras, Andean world music ensembles, and several rock and pop groups as well. As a studio guitarist I have recorded for various artists including Jaci Velasquez, Carlos Ponce, Alexandre Pires, and Noelia.

Every one of you is unique and there are many possible paths to reach your goals in music.

With my background and music industry experience, I am able to customize my lessons for you so that you can reach your desired goals. We will take some time to find out where your passion lies in music and I will use my experience and knowledge to create a customized lesson-plan that will allow us to focus on reaching your desired goals and at the same time maintain a well rounded music education.

I find this to be key in making the lessons and your practice sessions very enjoyable, fun and laid back - knowing that everything we practice, play and talk about is in line with your goals as a student.

I will also be playing along with you and demonstrating everything that we're working on - music is meant to be shared and played with others and it is important to have that experience of interaction from early on in your lessons.

So whether it's learning to accompany yourself or others, write songs, read music, understand harmony, solo, or just jam out to your favorite songs, you will be well on your way to reaching your goals within 6 months of my lessons.

Look forward to making music with you!

From strumming chords & holding a pick, to using thumb & finger picks, alternate tuning & capo strategies, I work to inspire & elevate technique, musicality & fluency in the bluegrass genre.

About Alex
Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, Oud, bouzouki, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedic
ate themselves to the craft of making music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an experienced gigging musician in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my experiences, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Instrument-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Arranging & Orchestrating
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Instrument maintenance
Instrument-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of effort they put forth. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

We have only had three lessons with Alex, so realistically, it is hard to comment fully. However so far, my son likes Alex very much, which says a lot. Alex shows up for lessons on time. He is polite and knowledgeable. He is also a professional musician, which brings experience and depth to his interactions with my son. We plan to continue lessons with Alex.

- Electric Guitar: Rhythm, Soloing, Scales & Modes, Power & Barre Chords
- Bass Guitar - Finger & Pick Style, Playing over Chords & Scales, Be the Bottom
- Drums: Basic Beats, Grooves & Fills, Separating Hands & Feet, Reading Music
- Keyboard: Chord Progressions, How to Play in a Band, Reading Chord Charts

About John
Started playing a Soprano Uke at an early age. Quickly moved to a Baritone Uke and wrote my first song at age 11. This also was the year that a Drum Set came into our house. I was in love with music . . . and still am after all these years!!
Hear are instruments I play professionally: Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar and Drum Set. I also have performed and led worship with the Electronic Keyboard. I can do beginner lessons in all of the above and Banjo, Mandolin & Fiddle.
Over the years I have enjoyed leading Worship Bands, forming Praise Teams, joining the "pit" for Musical Theater, Bluegrass Band, Solo Guitar & Voice and Background Music on the Keyboard. The list goes on and on and on AND the list is not finished yet. Have written quite a few songs and worked with other song writers on their pieces. If you hope to be a singer/son
gwriter . . . then I am your man! I can help with voice coaching and experienced critique of lyrics and chord selections.
Great success teaching the above instruments as well. The youngest student taught is 5 years old and the most mature was 72 years young!
I want you to know that I am a Christian. My love for Jesus continues to grow and I have always been careful to screen certain songs out of my repertoire and teaching.
Let me share with you My Love of Music and get you where you are hoping to go with yours.

About Derek
Derek Wesley Arnold is a professional singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist currently living in the United States. He was born in North Carolina on February 24th, 1983. Derek began learning music at age 4 with the help of his father (Harvey Dalton Arnold: bassist for legendary Southern Rock band The Outlaws). Derek would play melodies and chords he heard on the radio or around the house and Harvey would explain to him how these related to each other. At the age of 10 Derek began playing drums, and by fourteen he was playing professionally in the nearby counties.
In high school Derek started the band Blue Dust Box with three of his classmates. This band charted for two weeks at #8 in the Australian Unsigned Artist Charts. Derek was the primary songwriter for the group. At age 19 he moved to Raleigh and quickly became one of the most sou
ght-after bassists in the region, which led to multiple tours of the United States and Canada, as well as countless hours of session work. Derek was also consistently the house bassist for five separate music venues in Raleigh over a 7 year period.
While based out of Raleigh, Derek played with John Custer (Columbia/Sony Records), Kenny Soule (Nantucket/DAG), Nick Hagelin (The Voice/Superstition TV Show, Interscope Records, Carolina Ballet), Daniel "Slick" Ballinger (B.B. King's Oh Boy! Records), world renowned blues legend John Dee Holeman (Martin Guitars/Music Maker Foundation) and many others.
Derek now lives in Winston Salem, NC. He earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition and his Master of Music Degree in Composition at the conservatory University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

I had the pleasure of teaching Derek private composition lessons at the UNCSA School of the Arts from 2016 to 2018. He is one of the most versatile musicians I've ever encountered--at home with a wide variety of American styles as well as being an accomplished concert composer. He is well-acquainted with virtually every instrument in the popular music genre, and is a gifted singer-songwriter. Derek is likable and has a winning personality as a teacher.

Derek shows a consistent understanding of the harmonic and aural significance of the exercises he teaches. I was new to the concept of ear training, and he was able to very clearly demonstrate and explain the material. He has an in depth knowledge of a large variety of styles, and has serious training in the classical tradition.

I have taught guitar for a few years and have been a Professional Guitar Player for a number of years. I am Very Experienced with Electric and Acoustic Styles. I have been on tour and played in numerous bands around the California and Washington Area. I currently play in a ProgRock band based out of Santa Cruz. I study a lot in my own time to continue learning more and create lesson plans for the serious and light students. If you are looking to learn songs, learn theory, learn the way the guitar works and how it weaves in and out of songs, I will be able to teach you that and much more. If you are looking to play shows, and are looking to join a band but need some help, I can spice up your chops and make you comfortable in a public setting. Performance and band settings are one of my specialties. I also include a bit of theory knowledge to whatever level of playing you are at so that way you can grasp the concept of the art we are involved in, making the guitar and music seem so ...

About Kyle
I am a 26 year old musician who has been playing since 13 years old. I started out on bass because I thought 4 strings would be easier, a year later I decided six strings was a bit more challenging and I have never looked back. As a sophomore in high school I won the battle of the bands contest and a year later I played my first gig in a local bar! Since then I have always thrived to be a great performer and a solid player. A part of me has always wanted to pass on my knowledge to anyone who is interested in being a great player and/or performer. Even if you play a different instrument than guitar and are looking for an extra skill for performance or musicianship, I can be the help that you need. I had a conversation with a friend of mine who plays the banjo and every time we play he learns something from me even though I don't play the b
anjo. We decided that I could teach "How to be a musician". So that is what I specialize in as well as the guitar itself! I have played in numerous bands around the Washington State and California area, I currently play in a ProgRock band based out of Santa Cruz, Ca. I have studied music theory for 10 years and it makes playing so much more simplistic once you get the fundamentals down, and it only grows more and more the more that you learn. From my studies I have gained easier ways to learn theory and ways for students to understand what is being taught. I am also a dad with a 3 year old son which inspires me everyday to teach and be a great person. Currently, I work at a local guitar store here in Santa Cruz and I am going to school to earn my bachelors degree in music. I also have been studying the piano. I can read music and I can teach how to transpose material. I can teach all styles although I specialize in Rock n' Roll, Blues, Pop-Rock, and Metal Styles. Feel free to ask any questions you may have!
