I took 5 lessons with Ed, very great instructor. I learned a lot in those few lessons. He helped with with my pitch and with my accent that I had to prepare for an audition. With his help I was accepted into my high school’s A cappella group “Madrigals” and overall I would recommend. We made it work and tried to make the best out of the situation. Great experience:)

My kids thoroughly enjoyed lessons with Ed (both guitar and piano). Lessons started with my 7yo and when his brother turned 4yo, he started as well.

I'm comfortable teaching the banjo in a variety of styles but will typically start in Bluegrass. I can teach both Scruggs style finger picking and basic to intermediate Clawhammer. My comfort zone is higher in the Scruggs style of playing however.

I also teach beginning to advanced Tenor Banjo (CGDA Tuning). Though it looks similar to the 5-string bluegrass banjo, the Irish Tenor Banjo and Tenor have only 4 strings and are played with a traditional guitar pick (a "plectrum" - though a "plectrum" banjo is tuned different then these other 2) and strummed rather then plucked with individual fingers.

I can teach the Plectrum Banjo as well (CGBD Tuning) but will be teaching you on a 5 string banjo that I only play with four strings.

About Jared

I am overjoyed and grateful to say I have been teaching music since 2008. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience. More importantly, I love teaching and playing music with a passion. I play a great variety of instruments and have had the opportunity

I felt really comfortable and not at all intimidated with my first lesson. Looking forward to the next lesson.

Taught at the basic level very well. If you know nothing about music or guitar Tommy's your guy. Goes through all the simple steps at an even pace making the entire experience relaxing. From there giving you the knowledge of your scales and blues scales, teaching you how to make mini solos on the spot really helps out with the musicality of it all. 10/5

"I had a great first lesson with Richard! I had been tinkering around for a while before starting lessons, and right off the bat he was able to answer all my questions and give me some tips to better set up my banjo and get a great sound out of it. He has some fun exercises to practice finger coordination, and was a great balance of bringing a structure to the lesson but also meeting me where I am and keeping it interesting."

"I started with Richard in July, and by October I'm not only playing and singing songs on the banjo, I'm also learning musical theory that I never really fathomed learning. It's opened up a side of my brain that's been rather dormant for the last forty seven years."

"Antonio has been involved in the teaching and learning of music since his earliest years and it has been such a thrill and a delight to watch his talent grow. Not only is Antonio a top-notch musician who is in demand at festivals and other venues, but he is personable and easy going which makes his ability to teach even better. I have first hand knowledge of his ability to work with younger students which is a rare gift that not all musicians can do successfully. Yet, even at his "younger than some others" age, he has the respect and the ability to teach students of all ages. I recommend Antonio on mandolin and banjo in particular but I have no doubt he is excellent on guitar as well. Another wonderful characteristic of a great teacher is their own personal journey in learning. Antonio is always seeking the expertise and advise from other great instructors which is an important part of teaching that is often overlooked. Antonio is truly the complete package and you will be well pleased with his services."

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
