I started playing acoustic guitar when I was seven years old (off and on). I then started traveling more and found the mandolin to be so much easier to carry around and so much fun, it was hard to stop playing it. I have been playing and teaching mostly bluegrass, old time, Irish, blues, and swing jazz styles for many years. I have taught both privately and have also done various workshops at festivals. I have taught multiple years for instance at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival in PA, The Traditions week at Common Ground on the Hill Festival in MD, etc
My students learn to have fun with music. Students can work on rhythms, melodies, improvisation, song writing, arranging tunes, music theory, getting into and/or hanging on in a jam session, etc.

About Tara

I have a Masters in Education as well as having spent many years performing, teaching in one on one and group settings both privately and at music camps and festivals. I play and teach bluegrass, old time, Irish, and swing jazz styles. I like my students to really enjoy playing music and their less

I have taught music for 10 years and believe students should get to play what they want to play! Students are asked to come up with a list of songs and/or artists they would love to play. Through teaching chords, note reading and theory, the song possibilities are endless! I also can help the aspiring singer/mandolin player to be able to both play and sing simultaneously.

Hello there! I'm Rachel C., a bass player and singer on the stage who also enjoys playing and teaching all stringed instruments. I have a degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in Music Education. I've taught lessons for over 10 years and truly love working with eager students of all age

Damien explains the concept very well and asks questions to find out how much I already know. He tailors the classes to my abilities (I used to play piano and guitar) and interests. I am inspired to practise the techniques so I can play the music I chose. Just my third lesson and Damien is already introducing “improvisation” and that I was ready as long as I practise my scales. Being taught by Damien is exhilarating. Very blessed.
Ben Snyder
I really enjoyed my lesson and am very excited about learning to play the banjo and taking more lessons!
David R.
Damien does a great job of mixing theory with practical application.

Mandolin is one of my favorite instruments. I have played it for the past thirteen years and it's been one of the most fulfilling skills I have.

In mandolin lessons, we will study technique, scales, chords, sight reading and improvising. We will learn tunes and play them together to focus your ability to accompany as well as take the lead.

I am a new student -- and have never learned to play an instrument. I was encouraged by medical providers to learn an instrument as part of certain of my cognitive therapies. My instrument (the mandolin) was a gift from my son.
I have been fortunate to work with Sean O. G. Burns over the past few months. His style is perfect for my needs. He is patient, and leads with a gentle push -- no pressure! Sean is incredibly talented in his own right musically, and has talents - I'm sure, well beyond my needs -- I see him as an excellent teacher for all ages!
Sara J.
Sean is the music theory graduate assistant at the University of Redlands and is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. He is also a great composer and plays multiple instruments. I would highly recommend him as a music teacher or tutor.

"When I met Concetta online, I had never played the Mandolin before. Now after 4 going on 5 months I am in the beginning stages of learning Vivaldi's Concerto for Mandolin. This feat was accomplished by Concetta's knowledge, understanding and compassion for this student who was clumsy, awkward and with little self confidence. I now know where I want to go with the Mandolin and with Concetta's guidance and wisdom, I know I will be given a strong foundation to achieve it. This has been the best experience for me and I know it will also be for you as well....:)"

"Jeff rocks!

Jeff took me from a raw beginner to a performer. He's unique in that he tailors his teachings to YOUR needs and then does what it takes to help you reach your goal. Additionally, if you want a teacher who relates to your musical sensibilities, Jeff's the man. His immense and eclectic music collection indicates a very wide range of musical appreciation. Can't say enough, if need hand holding or a taskmaster you can't do better. If you're not local Jeff's worth the drive."

"Chris is great. He plays a bunch of instruments, so we'll often switch between mandolin, guitar, and bass in the course of a single lesson. He can be flexible or regimented depending on the needs of the student, and he's able to incorporate theory into the lesson seamlessly. Highly recommend."

He incorporates technical exercises to improve strength/accuracy/precision, improvisational exercises, music theory, and repertoire building into his lessons. "Highly recommended teacher

I am in my mid-30s and picking up Mandolin for the first time without much background in music. Scott has been really great to learn from, teaching me not only the basics of scales and chords but he also has me working on songs and solos which I never thought I'd be able to do so early. I would highly recommend Scott."

"I had a great experience with Alex. He is very flexible and catered each lesson to my learning style and goals. You can learn music theory, technique, and how to have fun playing music with your instrument. I kept finding that one hour flew by with the amount of music that was being played. I highly recommend to anyone on both sides of the spectrum; someone who knows exactly what they want to achieve and someone who doesn't know where to begin."

How to Play The Mandolin for Beginners: 5 Steps to Get Started

So you want to learn how to play the mandolin. For beginners to playing an instrument, the mandolin is a great option for starting your musical journey.
