I have studied so many styles of playing, played in bands professionally throughout the country, and can teach you to play with amazing technique so you don’t injure yourself!

I will guide you through the process of practice, learning by ear, or learning sheet music. I have a classical background so can work with classical players who want to learn fiddling.

My linguistics background really helps me with understanding how we learn fiddle tunes, how to get a fiddle “accent”, looking at the elements that makes one style different from another, etc.

I’ve taught 40+ students a week for the past 20 years, won numerous competitions, and performed on the BBC Alba and other venues.

About Amy

I am the great-granddaughter of a musician who used to play with Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Goodman in NYC in the 1930s and 40s! I believe every person has the right to be musically fluent, and to have music available to them as a tool for self expression, emotional expression, stress relief, and

I have taught music for 10 years and believe students should get to play what they want to play! Students are asked to come up with a list of songs and/or artists they would love to play. Through teaching chords, note reading and theory, the song possibilities are endless! I also can help the aspiring singer/mandolin player to be able to both play and sing simultaneously.

I'm really enjoying learning the fiddle. Benji is a very good instructor. He has a great deal of experience and knowledge, has great intuition about how to present and teach, encourage and challenge me based on where I am moment to moment. He is very patient and encouraging, with a calm energy, which are excellent qualities in a teacher. I highly recommend him.

"Concetta was such a treat to have in our home! She came out all the way from NY to NJ for my mothers birthday, and though she is a beginner, emerged from the 1 hour lesson so inspired to keep practicing, able to fully complete her first song! She even did a little performance at the end on the lesson! She is a great people person, fun to talk to, and she really knows her stuff. Excellent choice!"

"Julianna has been teaching my grand daughter (who just turned 12) for the past five years and I just can't say enough about what a great teacher she is. We feel so lucky to have found her and couldn't be happier with her teaching ability. She is talented, knowledgeable, patient, dedicated to teaching, and clearly has an honest desire to help her students be the best fiddlers they can be. I highly recommend her."

"What a wonderful and enthusiastic teacher! My daughter has had fiddle lessons for 2 years in person, and to finally cut down on our two-hour commute I suggested on-line lessons. The computer had a few connection issues on our end that we will definitely iron out before our next session. Lucky for us, Kathleen worked patiently through the connectivity bumps and gave a very upbeat, challenging lesson with all the backup sheet music, recording, and plenty of thumbs up to keep my daughter motivated and practising. We are very happy we "found" Kathleen and highly recommend her as an instructor!!"

What's the Difference Between the Violin and Fiddle?

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin. …
