About Edwin
Hello! Thank you for your interest in taking guitar/piano/music lessons.

I am a professional teacher/studio musician/performer/producer with over 17 years of private teaching experience and a graduate of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program in 2002 specializing in the guitar.

I am available to teach guitar(acoustic, electric, classical) for all levels, ages, and styles(pop to folk, rock to soul, world to classical) in English, Spanish and Japanese.

Other subjects taught include bass guitar, piano/keyboard, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, harmonium, classical percussion, music theory, composition(all styles from pop to classical), ear training, and studio production/engineering/mixing.

Born in Cali, Colombia on April 1979, I began my musical endeavors studying the piano at the age of 6. Early on I had the opportunit
y to play percussion in the school symphony while at the same time developed an intense interest in the instrument that would become my true love, the guitar.

During 1996-98 I studied jazz guitar at the New World School of the Arts music program under the direction of J.B. Dyas and Dr. Roby George. Upon graduation, I was immediately accepted to the University of Miami jazz guitar program under the direction of Randall Dollahan. It was during this time that I also refined my skills as a classical guitarist and as a composer/arranger. In addition, I began passing my knowledge onto friends and eventually began working as a teacher.

My ability to play almost any genre of music is the fruit of past experience playing with an impressive variety of music groups, including jazz combos, symphony orchestras, Andean world music ensembles, and several rock and pop groups as well. As a studio guitarist I have recorded for various artists including Jaci Velasquez, Carlos Ponce, Alexandre Pires, and Noelia.

Every one of you is unique and there are many possible paths to reach your goals in music.

With my background and music industry experience, I am able to customize my lessons for you so that you can reach your desired goals. We will take some time to find out where your passion lies in music and I will use my experience and knowledge to create a customized lesson-plan that will allow us to focus on reaching your desired goals and at the same time maintain a well rounded music education.

I find this to be key in making the lessons and your practice sessions very enjoyable, fun and laid back - knowing that everything we practice, play and talk about is in line with your goals as a student.

I will also be playing along with you and demonstrating everything that we're working on - music is meant to be shared and played with others and it is important to have that experience of interaction from early on in your lessons.

So whether it's learning to accompany yourself or others, write songs, read music, understand harmony, solo, or just jam out to your favorite songs, you will be well on your way to reaching your goals within 6 months of my lessons.

Look forward to making music with you!

Edwin is knowledgeable, talented, good-humored, and most important of all: VERY patient. I started with zero knowledge of acoustic guitar and Edwin has steadily built up my confidence and challenged me to grow. He’s always flexible and works with you and your musical tastes to make sure you stay motivated. I’ve been working with him for almost a year now and I can’t recommend him enough!

I've been taking boogie woogie piano lessons with Edwin for a couple of years now. I have little talent but Edwin has always been patient and encouraging. He is an excellent musician and seems to be able to figure out the most obscure sequences from recordings which is important because a lot of this stuff isn't written down. Plus he's willing to take an unconventional approach as normal teaching methods don't seem to work on me. I highly recommend him.

I have a strong understanding of a strict, classical education, but never want the instrument to diminish the joy of music. I will not only teach a strong foundation of guitar, but will set you up to be able to be comfortable enough to perform and share your love of the craft with others.

Outside of just teaching the instrument, I can also teach how to approach studio situations, and getting the most out of the guitar tonally for whatever a song may need.

Overall I am just more than happy to share my love and passion of the instrument to others.

About Phillip

Almost all forms popular music in America got it's start in the blues. Musical genres such as both jazz and rock have their roots deeply in the blues. Some blues songs, such as Stormy Monday by T. Bone Walker were using basic blues chord patterns, but then on the 6th measure of each verse, T Bone would throw in a standard jazz chord progression. G9, Am7, Bm7, Bb13, Am7, D7b9, G9, followed by C9 back to the G9 and then the verse would end on a dominant 5th chord with a #9th, [D7#9]. This is where the 2 genres sometimes started to really mix with each other. Blues is the foundation where this all began. Rock and roll on the other hand, stayed closer to older and simpler blues chord progressions and licks, but played the tempos far quicker than a blues song would play, and the rhythm section would also play a lot more aggressively than a blues band would. Early rock and roll stayed very close to the original and more simple chord progressions of the earlier blues songs.

Jeff Stetson is the greatest guitar teacher in the universe! I first began taking guitar lessons with Jeff in 1983. Jeff's a very knowledgeable musician plus he's a kind hearted person who made learning guitar alot of fun. Jeff taught me endless scales and chord voicings plus good playing technique and music theory skills. Jeff taught me how to play great songs by the Beatles, Santana, Jobim, Dizzy Gillesby plus many of his finely crafted and inspiring original compositions. I highly recommend talking guitar lessons from Jeff to everyone at all levels of playing.

Anything from Robert Johnson to Stevie Ray Vaughan...

About Nils
Whether you're a beginner or more advanced, age 5 or 500, in my experience, with just a little bit of practice each day anyone can learn to play guitar.
Maybe your goal is to simply learn to play your favorite songs or maybe you want to learn to write your own music, improvise, or perform live.
Like all good things in life, there are no shortcuts, and learning the guitar takes time and effort, but in return you get the ability to express yourself through music, which is one of the most rewarding skills anyone could ever learn, at any age and in any situation.

My main focus is on helping you reach the point where you are actually playing music, instead of endlessly going over exercises or theory.
I want you to be able to play music you would enjoy listening to, because this is when you will start to truly appreciate your accomplish
ment, and progress will start to come much easier.

Together we will discuss your personalized course, based on your goals and situation, and along the way I will provide materials/tools and a summary or a recording of each lesson as needed, for you to take home to work on.
Different aspects we'll discuss are technique, chart/sight reading, music theory, ear training, soloing/improvisation, and developing a strong sense of rhythm, most of which will be done through simply learning to play the songs you like.
Besides the basics, it's very important to learn how to independently keep challenging yourself, learn from your mistakes and continue growing musically, simply using your ears and whatever information you can find online or anywhere else, even without my help.

Besides teaching you how to play I can also help with finding the right instrument and equipment, provide advice on guitar/amplifier maintenance and setups, as well as recording techniques, or any other practical matters related to playing music/guitar.

Lessons can be either at your residence or at my fully equipped home studio in the Hollywood Hills/Studio City area. In a beautiful and private environment, with plenty of (free/safe) street parking available.
Lessons via Skype are obviously available as well.
I look forward to hearing from you!

I had several great lessons with Nils. He helped me break through a plateau I was on in terms of modal soloing and also with recognizing chord shapes and how the lie underneath scale structures. He was responsive, knowledgeable and quick to grasp what I, as an already experienced player, needed to improve. Highly recommended!

My son absolutely loves Nils. Nils has been his guitar teacher for a few years now and has been very patient and accommodating especially since my son has Autism which can sometimes make traditional instruction a challenge. However, Nils is able to recognize his strengths and treats him just like a regular "cool dude" and I have since seen my son be more confident with his guitar playing. Nils has helped my son become a better " Rock Star" every week.

Each lesson is designed on the level of the student's ability from beginner to advanced. Rock, R&B, funk, jazz, blues, POP and country music. I like to use song learning as a vehicle to sharpen your skills. Learning skills through songs is more fun for beginners. More advanced students will work on everything from theory, reading, harmony; and how you can use scales and arpeggios in a number of ways over several different styles of music.

About Stephen
" Customized Lesson Plan for Each Student. "

Learning the guitar is a fun, yet, challenging experience. Having an instructor guide you through the process makes learning easier and more efficient. The internet provides a wealth of information but can not interact with you and help your specific needs. Many guitar players get frustrated and give up. Getting the encouragement and expertise of an instructor who has been there before greatly enhances chances of success.

My style of teaching is founded on fun with the instrument and guiding students to real music situations. Many students come to me with an incomplete set of skills. These (self taught) players have several basic fundamental holes in their playing.

It is also important to me that students have a basic knowledge of music theory. This way, they can enjoy the gui
tar for the rest of their life. If you just learn to put your hands in a certain place to play a certain song, you are missing out. If you learn what it is your actually doing, you can apply it. This may be the most important benefit of a private instructor.

What You Will Learn:

Beginning Students:
In my experience, over several years, I find most beginners are surprised the guitar is so hard to play. Having an instructor to help you past that frustration will lead to a lifelong enjoyment of your guitar in the songs you love.
- Learning the basic chords.
- How to move from chord to chord smoothly.
- Using these chords to play your favorite songs.
- Understanding guitar notation (tabs, chord grids, song books, standard notation).
This way, the skills you learn will last a life time!

Intermediate/ Advanced Students:
This is for the hungry players. You will be given the direction to achieve a high level of musicianship. You will be challenged to reach your full potential.
- Technique drills
- Scale knowledge
- Advanced chords
- Improvisation tips
- Chop Building
- Theory
- Reading
- Composition

Experience & Background:

I've teaching and performing professionally for 23 years.
- One year OCHSA jazz combo.
- Fifteen years performing music clubs, casuals as a solo performer and in a jazz trio.
- Twenty three years teaching individuals and groups.
- Eleven years as Irvine and Laguna YAMAHA Music school instructor.

I've studied with some of the top teachers in California:
- Jim Fagen (classical guitar)
- Erik Halbig (rock, jazz & country)
- Jim Witzel (head of jazz guitar at CSUSF)
- Ron Eshcete (jazz guitar)
- Carl Verheyen (everything).

Stephen is the best guitar instructor I have ever had. He uses the music that you enjoy to keep you motivated and makes the exercises fun. I offer a variety of teaching styles to fit wherever you're at. If you're starting from the beginning, we can start with chord and scale basics and get you on the way to playing some simple songs. If you're further along, and your goal is to play specific songs; I'm happy to learn them in advance so that we can spend our time learning the proper way to play your favorite songs just like the original recordings. I learn by ear as well as read music, so just about any song is achievable that you pick. I have several guitars and amps in my rehearsal space at home for you to play, and I can point you to some great chord and theory books so that you can practice throughout the week in between lessons. I have taught students from beginner level to advanced. My hope is that we can go over the chord and theory that will help you understand and advance on your instrument as a lifelong player; and I also want to focus on the styles that inspire you so as to make learning a fun experience!

About Craig
Hi! My name is Craig. I began playing and taking guitar lessons when I was 7 years old. My first gig as a guitarist was in Trombone Shorty's band at the age of 16. Since then, I have written and produced several records that have taken me on tours opening for acts such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mutemath, Jack Johnson, The Funky Meters, Lifehouse, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Incubus...to name a few. It's been a great honor of mine to share the stage with these great performers, and I've also learned from some of the best teachers in the business. I currently work as a recording artist and band leader, and I teach guitar out of my home in Los Angeles. I am passionate about teaching players of all levels. I studied jazz and pop voice at The University of New Orleans, and I studied jazz guitar in big band ensembles at the New Orleans Creativ
e Center for The Arts. I've been privileged to learn from and currently study guitar with some of New Orleans and Los Angeles's finest guitar players.
I look forward to meeting!

I want to help you play the music you were born to play. :)

Most music teachers talk about their qualifications as a player. I happen to be a great player, but the reason you should study with me is that I am a phenomenal teacher. I possess the ability to clearly communicate complex musical concepts, I am patient and compassionate, and I have a strong vision for the growth of each of my students within the context of their interests.

I started playing guitar when I was only 13 years old, I'm now 28. When I was 13, I took for granted the importance of a teacher and I learned things based on short-term, little wins (learning that new Green Day song for a show). I never actually took the time to learn how to truly play the guitar and understand the WHY or to hone fundamental skills, spot bad posture and technique, or explain how songs are melodies are created. When I was 23, I picked up the guitar again (after putting it all throughout college and late high school), and completely relearned how to play as a mature adult. I took the hard time to relearn techniques, understand theory, break free from bad habits and I've become a much, much better guitarist as a result. I understand what it's like to WANT

About Patrick
I'll never forget the first time I received my very own guitar. It was a red Fender Squier stratocaster and I was just 13 years old. I remember plugging into my little amp and trying it out. I knew nothing about guitar, all I knew was I wanted to sound like Jimi Hendrix.

I think it was probably day 3 when I had a breakdown and ran downstairs to my mother sobbing because I didn't think I'd ever be able to play guitar and that I made a mistake.

But there's a lesson here, potential student. Guitar is HARD. Learning how to play a guitar takes a lot of patience, time, repetition and most importantly, the right attitude. 15 years later and here I am, teaching others how to play. I've been through the learning process and I know how frustrating music can be. But it's also incredibly fun and there aren't enough instructors out there that
make it that way.

If you want to play anything from screaming, roaring blues licks to melodic Pink Floyd tonal adventures I can help get you there the right way. If you just want to learn how to play a couple chords, not a problem.

I understand what it's like to WANT to sound like the John Mayers of the world and what it's like to lack patience. But there are ways around this and it's all about how you teach. Every young kid picks up the guitar because they want to sound like SOMEONE. But there's a path to getting there and there aren't enough guitar teachers that know how to communicate that and make it fun for their subjects. The most important parts of understanding guitar fundamentals are completely top of mind for me and I believe one of my biggest strengths as an individual is turning complex concepts into bite-sized, relatable things.

I'm an entrepreneur that has started my own business and this is what I do because I'm passionate about music.

Pat is a super friendly, welcoming and super talented teacher. I’m just starting to learn guitar and he taught me all the basics to get on my feet and start developing on my own. He can teach at whatever pace you’d like and he’s super flexible with time and location! HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Pat was very patient with me, as I was a true beginner. He teaches in a way that is easy to understand and retain the info. Highly recommend.

Pat is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the guitar as an instrument so his lessons really resonate more than any other lessons I’ve had. You really feel like you have a comprehensive understanding of the how’s and why’s of everything he teaches you.
In addition, Pat is just a super cool guy and makes the lessons very enjoyable. Would strongly recommend Pat to anyone!
