I have over 30 years experience as a music teacher. Although guitar is my main instrument, I play several stringed instruments, including mandolin, well enough to teach beginners of ALL ages - children, teens, and adults. I have played mandolin with bluegrass bands, in the past.
Mandolin is a good first instrument for those who have never played a stringed instrument before, and for young children whose hands are not strong enough to play a larger instrument such as a guitar. It is fairly easy to learn, and fun to play.
About Linda
I have been teaching music (guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, recorder, music theory, and classes for toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children, and adults) for over 20 years. I am also a band/show director at the School of Rock! In addition to teaching music, I also tut

I am in my mid-30s and picking up Mandolin for the first time without much background in music. Scott has been really great to learn from, teaching me not only the basics of scales and chords but he also has me working on songs and solos which I never thought I'd be able to do so early. I would highly recommend Scott."

I would say that within six months of weekly lessons with him I was working on sight reading music in two or three genres at moderate tempos, I was able to learn songs from listening, and I was honing my technique to bluegrass playing and going to bluegrass jams in New York. He was always attuned to my level and to what I was doing with my playing. He put a great deal of thought into lesson planning and chose to work on pieces that appealed to my individual taste, prepared me for the musical community I was breaking into, and generally kept my momentum up during my first year of mandolin playing and got me to a place I was really happy with. He was on the line when I upgraded my mandolin, because when you’re dropping a couple grand on something you call your sensei. And he was and is a great sensei.
One of my biggest musical hurdles, if not my biggest, is performance anxiety. Andrew has a great disposition for making people feel relaxed in a lesson setting; he’s an easygoing, sensitive and cool guy who can show up for you wherever you happen to be that week. He also has a really great dog named Ryder who liked to hang out during lessons.
I would 10/10 1,000% recommend Andrew. If he is not already your mandolin teacher, hire him and congratulate yourself! You are on your way to mandolin greatness."

So you want to learn how to play the mandolin. For beginners to playing an instrument, the mandolin is a great option for starting your musical journey. Many people ask, "Is the mandolin easy to play?" or "Is it hard to play the mandolin?" Fortunately, the mandolin is not a difficult instrument to learn. It’s lightweight and compact so you can practice anywhere. It also has less strings than many other instruments, like the guitar, which makes reading tablature much easier. The mand …
