I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

Playing a brass instrument is a physically demanding, high concentration activity that can lead to immense joy and fulfillment when approached correctly. I offer all my students practical and musical ways to master the tuba that will lead to life long enjoyment. I will equip you with fundamentals for healthy practicing and can offer lessons in several styles, including jazz, classical, and salsa. Additionally, I have helped students prepare for school, district, and regional auditions.
MUSIC LESSONS: Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.
*** Lesson Details *** I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. To that end, I work hard to tailor lessons to every
individuals interests and goals. Sometimes this means arranging, transcribing a recording, or even composing something new for my students. Additionally, in each lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.
*** Travel Equipment *** The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)
*** Home Studio *** I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.
*** Specialties *** I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.
For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.
MATH: I use my years of classroom teaching and Master's degree in math education as experience to help guide you to the success you are seeking. I am able to tailor sessions to your specific needs with a few key points in mind:
- helping you catch-up, while also preparing you for what is ahead - balancing practice with conceptual knowledge and application - using research-based techniques to maximize your learning
I am a patient teacher, and well-equipped to explain tough topics in multiple ways. I like to use visuals and objects with simple examples to help my students really understand a concept before we try harder material. Total understanding and confidence is my goal for you.
My personal interests in mathematics are problem solving, puzzles, and combinatorics (think "How many different outfits can I make with all the clothes in my closet?"). If you're looking for an addicting puzzle to try, I suggest KenKen to all my students.
As a part of my music education certification, I am trained to teach beginner levels in all brass instruments.
William Combs provides music teaching, performing and arranging services to the community of Lubbock, TX. In 2019, he completed doctorate work at the University of Colorado - Boulder. He completed his bachelor’s degree in music education and performance at Texas Tech University, and his Master’s in trombone performance, and his Performer’s Certificate, at the University of Denver. His extensive resume a wide variety of concerts, clinics, master-classes, performances, and recording sessions; most notably: the TTU Vernacular Music Center, Lubbock Moonlight Musicals, Colorado Wind Ensemble, Denver Municipal Band, Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, and the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Combs has taught all ages of students on trombone, euphonium, tuba, and chamber ensembles for 6 years. He was the brass section leader for the world premiere o
f the full-length theatrical dance show Dancing at the Crossroads and his arrangements have been played by chamber groups throughout northern Colorado.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are geared towards a set of goals that are created between the student's wants and my expectations for them to be successful at what the student wants to achieve. For each student, I use a different set of pedagogical tools designed to get them to the goals they want. The main goal I have for all my students is that their fundamentals on their instrument will be at the level that they can complete their goals with ease. Over their time with me, they will have the skills to coach themselves when they practice and tackle any music they come across.

Bill is a stand-up guy. My 11-yr-old beginner daughter is happy with her lessons so far and he interacts with me in a friendly and polite manner. He is respectful of our time and does what he says he's going to do. Can't ask for much more. We are looking forward to a summer of trombone lessons with him.

Zach joined The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Ceremonial Band in August, 2016. His primary duties include supporting funerals at Arlington National Cemetery as well as wreath laying ceremonies by heads of state and other foreign dignitaries at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, monthly retirement parades, special reviews, and arrival and departure honors for foreign dignitaries at the White House and Pentagon.
Zach received his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University where he studied with Dr. Kent Eshelman. He received his master’s degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he studied with David Kirk, Principal Tuba of the Houston Symphony.
Prior to joining “Pershing’s Own,” Zach performed with the Houston Ballet, East Texas Symphony and the Waco Symphony, as well as the festival orchestras of Lake Geor
ge, Brevard Music Center, National Music Festival, Texas Music Festival, and the Sewanee Music Festival.
In addition, Zach has performed in several solo competitions including the Artist Tuba solo competition at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Bloomington, Indiana, where he was a semi-finalist. He was also named winner of the 2011 Young Artist Tuba division at the International Leonard Falcone solo competition.
In his free time, he enjoys swing dancing with his wife Rebekah and playing with their cat, Lafayette.

My name is Chris, and I have been playing trumpet for over twenty years. I grew up in the TX public schools and was a two time TMEA All-State Musician. I hold three degrees in music from accredited universities: DMA at UGA, MM at UT-Austin, BM at NDSU. I enjoy teaching and helping others, and have a patient, kind approach to working with people. Zachary Al-Radiedeh is an avid performer and educator currently residing in the Greater Atlanta area. His eclectic career in music began when he chose the euphonium in fifth grade, mistakenly thinking it was a French horn. Since then, Zachary has become an active performer on many other instruments, including trombone, tuba, voice, and bass, and his performance idioms have ranged from classical to punk to folk fusion. His diverse career has led him to performances in a wide range of noteworthy venues, including Strathmore Music Center, the 9:30 Club, and Mile High Stadium. Zachary holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Towson University. He is currently pursuing a Master's of Music in Music Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Georgia, where he studies with acclaimed teacher David Zerkel. Notably, Zachary has st
udied euphonium with Matthew Shipes Seth Horner and James Hicks, and trombone with Natalie Mannix. He has performed under the baton of several esteemed conductors and composers, including Jason Fettig, Johan de Meij, and Timothy Holtan.
Outside of concert-style performance, Zachary has built a reputation as a sought-after educator and consultant in the world of marching music. As a marching member himself, he joined the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps for two national tours in 2015 and 2016, was a member of the Cadets2 Drum & Bugle Corps in 2014, and was a featured soloist with the Towson University Marching Band in 2015. Zachary has taken these experiences in top level ensembles and applied them as an active and engaging instructor for marching ensembles in the Baltimore area and beyond, including the Towson University Marching Band, Pioneer Drum & Bugle Corps, and the Urbana High School Marching Band.
Zachary's professional affiliations include membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Tau Beta Sigma, the Maryland Music Educator's Association, and the National Association for Music Education. In 2018, Zachary was a recipient of two prestigious honors at Towson University: winner of the University Concerto Competition and Second Prize in the Peggy Gordon Friedmann Music Competition. He currently performs on Willson 2950TA euphonium, a Conn 24H trombone, and a Besson 994-2 tuba.
Zachary has been a fantastic instructor for my son who is new to the trumpet and has never taken lessons before. Zachary is a very encouraging teacher, and he communicates very well regarding scheduling. Zac taught me how to properly perform an aria in front of a whole lot of important people that I was stressed about. He gave me some excellent pointers on how to work with a pianist. His knowledge of music and his experience in performance has certainly shaped the way I perceive my own performances ever since that lesson.

My name is Tyler Heltzel. I am a Music Education Major currently attending Tarleton State University. I have taught private lessons for low brass off and on since the Fall of 2012. I have helped students go on to State Solo and Ensemble competitions, as well as achieving success during TMEA All-Region auditions. My primary instrument is Euphonium, which I have played since 2005. I also play Trombone, Bass Trombone, Tuba, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Guitar, Bass, and Piano. I have been a musician for 29yrs. with Alto Sax being my Primary Instrument. Being a Woodwind player I also play Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion. ds. Initially (and throughout) I place a high value on performance fundamentals. I start with a focus on proper posture and breathing. Once this can be executed I breakdown the nomenclature of the student's instrument, how to put it together and break it down. Next the focus becomes proper grip for mallets/sticks and embouchure placement for winds. Students then begin to develop a proper "buzz" and "coo" and "roll" for their selected instrument as they work on basic notes for some time. Eventually this playing short 3 note songs and then 5 note songs etc. Progress for mastery is constantly checked.
In my classroom transdisciplinary is innate to my teach style. I teach all skills in my class using many methods including but, not limited to the following: Clapping, singing, stomping, writing, modeling, syllables (math), one-on-one Beginning players usually start with a short Assessment of their knowledge of music. We will spend a lot of time thorughout their experience on Tone, Intonation, Technique, Range, and Style using various styles. Experienced players usually start with a short Assessment of their knowledge of music. A high focus of our Studio time will be spent developing Music/Solos etc. they are already preparing for Honors groups, High School and College.
