About Rob
Rob (aka R.J.): Born in Detroit, Michigan, RJ studied r&b and jazz from Motown drummers and Funk Brothers Benny Benjamin and Uriel Jones. From the age of fifteen he played in rhythm & blues and jazz combos around Detroit. He then studied privately with Berklee School of Music drum maestro, Gene Stuart, mallet studies with Mark Johnson at Michigan State University and earned a Bachelors Degree from Michigan State. He moved to San Francisco where he studied North Indian percussion and tabla with Zakir Hussain, trap set with jazz recording artist George Marsh. He is a consummate producer, performer, recording artist and teacher. He plays and teaches all styles of rhythm including jazz, funk, blues, rock, latin, and world fusion. He teaches drumset, congas, djembe, tabla, cajon and hand percussion. In addition to teaching privately, RJ h
as directed special week-long drum and percussion focused ensemble productions at Drake High School and Marin Academy and was Music Director at Cascade Canyon (K-8) School for two years where he directed variety shows and produced scores for the drama department. In his teaching practice all ages are welcome and all levels including: beginners, intermediate students, advanced players, and professionals.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to drum lessons is simple. I want my students to be excited about every stage of the process. I want to be as productive as possible with each student and want the lessons to be fun and focused.
I want beginning students to learn the essentials of good posture, correct hand positions or grips (how to hold the sticks in matched and military grip), how to best use their hands and feet to get around the drumset and to then develop a solid foundation of applicable rudiments, rhythms and patterns. In fact,
I have master drumset rudiments that help facilitate fluid movement around the drums in all directions. My studio is equipped with a top level TAMA drumset with Zildjian cymbals, congas, timbales, hand percussion, piano, vibes, excellent recording and listening equipment and speakers.
I provide the necessary foundations of rudiments, rhythms, patterns and grooves. Then I show how to combine these essentials to the drumset. I combine these developments with essential reading studies so the student learns to read drum music and charts from the very beginning.
I find out what kind of music the student listens to and likes and then I will use some of the more familiar tracks by those artists to help the student apply each pattern stylistically into actual arrangements…like a guitar teacher would teach some scales and chords, then apply them to actual songs. That way the student will remember the different patterns and remained engaged in the process. It’s a “see, say and do” approach.
I have a saying that I use: “FREEDOM follows FUNCTION and function follows FORM.” First you learn the forms (rudiments, rhythms and patterns). Then, with practice, you become functional with the forms, rhythm patterns and combinations. Then you are free to use everything you learn as it relates to the music. Your are “free” to create and improvise both alone and with others.

Within six month my students will have a firm grasp of essential rudiments, rhythms, patterns, sticking, single and double bass drumset techniques and be reading charts for the drumset.
Later on, as part of the student’s development, I will introduce them to different styles of music including jazz, African, Afro-Cuban, Latin and Brazilian rhythms and patterns so that the student becomes a well-rounded player.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My Private Studio is on the first floor of my house: there is a six-piece professional series TAMA drumset and an assortment of K. and A. Zildjian cymbals, a piano, set of vibes, timbales, congas, bongos, djembe and a variety of hand percussion. There are additional chairs to sit on, Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Five and six piece drum sets, hard cases, three congas with cases, bongos in a hard case, timbales in a hard case, trap case for stands, cymbal case and stick bag.

*** Specialties ***
Trapset all styles, African djembe and shekere, Latin congas and timbales, Indian tablas.

I Got Lucky

A year and a half ago I decided to try to learn how to play an instrument, and chose drums. Learning how to also read and write music for drumming was high on my list. I also needed this to be a fun adventure with no real public performance goals for the first couple of years. It needed to be a stress reducer from the demands of the day job. Finding and working with RJ has been a total kick in the pants. I couldn't ask for a better coach. He hasn't let me get stuck in any one form, I'm learning all of them. It's hard! But I couldn't imagine not drumming now. It's very exciting, and I look forward to learning more over the coming years.

You won't find a better teacher than Rob. He obviously knows music, both theory and application. He is concerned about proper technique, but also enjoyment and variety, which means that you get it all. I'm learning tons more than I thought I would.

Are you in school band in the percussion section? If you'd like to get up to speed on those instruments or if you are gearing up and wish to study to become a member of an orchestra, I can help you understand the process to reach a high degree of technical proficiency. I am well versed in including timpani, mallets, snare drum, cymbals and all instruments in the array of orchestral percussion.

About John
I play a wide variety of musical styles on drums and percussion and have a long history of performance art in live bands, theater and orchestra. I teach drum set, symphonic and marching percussion, electronics in drumming (sampling, loops, midi etc), and general rhythm lessons for beginners. I also enjoy helping students prepare for auditions, studio recording sessions, and live performance opportunities. There's alot to know about what to do and what not to do in these situations, especially if you want to look like a pro and have a positive experience.

I studied percussion performance at Washington State University while developing my set playing and enjoying my employment with the Washington Idaho Symphony as a classical percussionist. I play in rock, funk, pop, metal, EDM, hip-hop, industrial, honky-tonk, and jazz outfits with mult
iple appearances at SXSW, Sundance Film Festival, TieCon, and various festivals throughout the US.

John is a fantastic teacher! I started with no experience at all and now after my fourth lesson I already feel comfortable with my grip, a metronome, sheet music, single stroke rolls, double stroke rolls, and several rock beats. Currently, I’m learning sixteenth note drum fills. He is patient, enthusiastic, fun, and extremely talented. I highly recommend him as a drum teacher (beginner or experienced). You will not regret it!

In percussion lessons my goal is to help the student become a well rounded percussionist and musician. I like to focus on technique, ear training, playing musically and how to properly practice with my students. We cover a variety of instruments including timpani, classical snare drum, tambourine, triangle, xylophone and a variety of other instruments. Drum set and Marimba are also important for Classical Percussionists, so those topics will also have the basics covered.

About Samuel
Hello potential students, my name is Sam! I would love to be your new music teacher. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Percussion Performance from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 2016. I am currently working towards a Masters Degree at San Diego State University where I serve as a Graduate Assistant. I conduct and artistically direct the SDSU Percussion Ensemble!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether my students are young or old, taking lessons as a hobby or wish to pursue a career in music, I tailor my lessons to meet each individual student’s needs and expectations.
I have a lot of fun teaching and I want you or your child to have fun during our lessons.
I try to build on what the student already likes, listens to and has a passion for. I encourage students to bring their favorite songs and we usually end up working with thos
e. I also like using songs by classic artists like The Beatles as they can provide a perfect (fun and familiar) platform to learn many different aspects of drumming and musical performance.
In addition to being a drummer and percussionist, I have a strong background in music theory and I want to make sure my students not only know how to play their instrument, but also become familiar with reading and writing music.

After a few months taking lessons, you or your child can expect to have a better understanding of music and have acquired the basic tools and techniques which will allow you to play your favorite pieces of music.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For drum set lessons, I will provide my own acoustic drum set as needed. It is highly preferred that the student have a drum set at their location. The student should also supply a location in which to have a private lesson.

*** Specialties ***
All styles of drumming

*** Curriculum ***
My curriculum changes depending on the student's ability level, age, and instrument of choice. I typically use a method book for reinforcement of musical fundamentals, and a supplementary "project" piece of music that the student enjoys playing and learning. I do this so that my students can see direct connections between music fundamentals and playing music that they enjoy. My own personal knowledge and experience as a musician is always added to each lesson as well.

I have been a percussionist since I was thirteen years old, and my passion for playing has never faltered.

In our first lesson together we will assess your knowledge and aptitude of technique and rhythm.

Then, we will identify your goals and specific needs. From there, we will chart a course and create a customized plan to help you succeed!

About Cameron
I have much to learn, but even more to teach.

I have an extensive background in music theory, technique, performance, rhythm, and especially musical composition.

While classically trained in percussion, with a range from battery instruments to melodic instruments; I have also been in several choirs throughout my education. All this combines to be able to hear chord progressions well and hear where a song should lead.

Regardless of if you are wanting to increase your technical skills on a Snare Drum, keyboard, bongo or Marimba; or develop your compositional prowess on a digital audio workshop, I am confident that my lessons will help.

Interested in lessons? Send me a message! I would love the opportunity to discuss your specific needs and goals further.

My whole approach to teaching instruments is I meet each student at their current skill level, and work WITH them to help them achieve their goals. Each student, no matter the age, usually has a favorite song, movie theme, video game soundtrack, etc., that they enjoy and would like to work towards playing. This motivation is key to ensuring daily practice. I also want to make learning fun for them, and purposely break down difficult concepts into bite-size pieces to reduce chances of excess frustration. Additionally, I give clear instructions of how the student is to practice in between lessons, frequently sending recorded audio of either myself or another professional, so the student has an exceedingly clear idea of the sounds and technique they are working towards as they grow and develop their musical skills. As a local San Jose elementary/middle school band director for the past six years, I take techniques that I have seen work really well in the classroom with a large variety of

About Ken
I started playing piano at the age of nine, and sang in our church choir growing up. From the moment I started playing piano, I found that I really had a love and enjoyment for music. My father and mother were both musically inclined and sang often. Both parents also played instruments.

I started playing trumpet at age 12, studying with the late Anthony Pasquarelli, who was professor of Trumpet Performance at Carnegie Mellon University for 47 years. It was his tireless pursuit of musical excellence, passion for music, and positive mentorship as a person, that inspired me to become a music educator.

Performing extensively in groups in high school, I was selected by audition to participate in numerous PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators' Association) Honors and District Ensembles on trumpet. These included Wind Symphony Ensembles,
Full Orchestra Ensembles, as well as Honors Jazz Ensembles.

After high school, I attended the aforementioned Duquesne University in Downtown Pittsburgh, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, trumpet being my major instrument. While there, I studied with Charles Lirette, co-principal trumpet of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Throughout my rigorous studies learning to both teach and play brass, woodwind, percussion, strings, and voice, I had the pleasure to perform in numerous collegiate ensembles, including Symphony Band, Wind Symphony, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble.

After graduation from Duquesne, I received my teaching credential for K-12 Music in Pennsylvania in combination with my Bachelor's degree. I currently hold a California Single-Subject Teaching Credential in Music, and recently completed a Masters of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University.

My teaching philosophy is that students can learn to love and appreciate music, while becoming the best musician they can possibly be. I do believe everyone has an innate talent for music. Whether that talent is realized or not depends on the dedication of one's teacher, and the efforts of the student. My approach is constructivist in nature; that is, the teacher should take into account the ability level of each student, and tailor content to them to optimize their understanding. Patience, compassion, and understanding should be balanced equally with high expectations and consistent encouragement. Sharing my love of music with people of all ages is a true delight!
