The violin sings, but the fiddle dances. Or so the old saying goes! In teaching fiddle, I love to bring essential violin technique together with the various styles of diverse music. In the first few lessons we'll explore the style of fiddle you'd like to play and create a path towards that sound. As time goes on, you'll be ready to jump into a bluegrass jam circle, start a ceili or shred like Lindsey Stirling! The direction you take is up to you, and I'm excited to help you meet your goals!
About Elias
At 5 years old I was struck by the incredible beauty of Vivaldi's music, and ever since I've been playing violin. I hold a BA from Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences, won a scholarship to the Baroque Performance Institute in 2005 and attended the BPI again in 2006. Apart from teaching, as a profe

As a teacher, I am extremely upbeat and encouraging! I meet students where they are and seek to make lessons enjoyable as well as challenging. I am absolutely passionate about bluegrass and old-time music! I began playing viola in 1972 at age 9, switched to fiddle (violin) in 2003, and have been performing in bands as a bluegrass fiddler ever since! Teaching is in my blood, as I was a full-time high school English teacher for 32 years prior to my recent retirement. I've been teaching fiddle students for the past five years, and have helped many beginning and intermediate students learn how to play songs and continue building their skills. I work primarily with training by ear, but can also help students learn to read music. If you're ready to "pull out the fiddle and rosin up the bow," then give me a call!
About Julie
I've been performing as a fiddler in bluegrass bands since 2003, and have absolutely loved my own journey as a musician! A lifelong musician, I started on viola at age 9 and played in school orchestra through high school and on into college, even as I earned my degree in secondary English Education

I am a fiddler and vocalist for internationally-touring and award-winning folk groups, Tullamore and Brackish Water Jamboree. In addition to my performance schedule, I am also honored to play first violin for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic. I run a thriving online teaching studio, which has been kicking since 2003, after earning my degree in violin performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Students describe me as patient, fun, and encouraging! As your teacher, you can expect me to work with you from where you are, and with subjects and curriculum that match what you are interested in learning. I teach traditional classical, using either Suzuki or Essential Elements, depending on your learning and self-motivational needs, and I also teach fiddle music, including Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, and alternative styles. *Please check my availability before signing up, as my time slots are quickly filling up!* I look forward to meeting you! Kelvin's unparalleled enthusiasm for life and music shines through in his playing and teaching style. He shows a strong proficiency in many different styles and on multiple instruments.
He's reliable, experienced, professional, and a great guy all around. One of Kelvin's main strengths is his ability to convey a given subject matter in a way that is meaningful, constructive and easily understood.
I'm also a music teacher (private lessons and in the classroom) as well as a professional performer. I've found it to be a great pleasure working with Kelvin and I would strongly recommend him as a teacher and a performer."

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin. …
