I have taught voice at the University of Southern California and have worked with the singers from the Met in NYC. I have collaborated with opera singers from the faculty of the Eastman School to such luminary as Marilyn Horne who has sang at LaScala, the Met and for 5 presidents of the United States at the White House. My collaboration to bring awareness to singing continued with conversations broadcast over the airwaves with Tony Randall. I have composed for voice and my compositions have been premiered at Lincoln Center by the Wagnerian singer in a Salon for the entire choir of the Metropolitan Opera House. My vocal compositions and performances range from premieres at the Dickens Festival in Texas, NY to broadcasts on NPR.

I have worked with Doctoral students in voice and with the little children who's voice has not yet set. Each is a unique experience and a treasure of nature. I look forward to guiding you on your journey of self discovery of that amazing instrument ...

Joseph has a wealth of knowledge about speaking, listening, vocals, etc.

He created a welcoming environment in our online lessons that made it easy to be vulnerable and get right to working on new skills.

I highly recommend for others looking to better understand their voice and communication style, and learn to hone them.

Joseph put us at ease immediately. Our first lesson included valuable information on how to warm up our voices, increase our range and protect our voices. We look forward to our next lesson.

I have been studying piano with Joseph for nearly five years. In that time, I’ve learned more about the piano and musical interpretation than I ever thought possible.

Joseph’s technical ‘short cuts’ are amazing! He illustrates ways for your hands and your mind to work that are tailor made for you. Learning from him is so fun it seems almost effortless.

The way Joseph teaches allows you to develop at your own pace. The atmosphere is always relaxed yet everything moves along quickly.

At the open classes I attend, his other students are progressing very rapidly too. After each class, we share our impressions. The mood is elated because it feels like we stepped back in time and into history.

Joseph often quotes inspired wisdom of his historic teachers in our lessons. He is a great inspiration on his own with great musical insights.

I’m playing Beethoven and Chopin works I never thought I could approach at this stage of study, with great depth of understanding. I now play with greater passion and skill, get compliments from everyone I play for, and no longer worry about playing in public.

I look forward to each and every lesson with Joseph. His encouragement and support makes learning so rewarding! Anyone who finds this musical treasure is a lucky person and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I have been a student of Michelle and Robert since August of 2016. I originally reached out to them to help my performance in school musicals as well as start the training process to one day become a professional musical theatre actress. What I ended up getting was that and so much more. Whatever opportunity I took, they were there supporting me every step of the way. They made sure I was prepared for anything: auditions, performances, competitions, solos, and much more. Each year I am astounded at the chances they give me to become a more well rounded performer, and at the high level of progress I make with them in a small amount of time. They helped uncover amazing things about myself I never dreamed of finding out.

As a student on the autism spectrum I had a lot of insecurities about working in a different and more private setting. Michelle and Robert’s care and dedication almost immediately wiped away those fears. Every lesson I felt encouraged to show my true self and was supported during the more vulnerable moments. The work they have done with their students with disabilities is something beyond praise.

4 years have passed with these amazing teachers, and I feel more prepared than ever for my future career in performing. I would highly recommend Michelle and Robert for any students with disabilities, aspiring musical theatre actors, or any general music fanatics with a strong will to learn!

Best vocal teacher ever! Being an online student, I think that even with the challenges of technology, this class and its content shines through. Both teachers help so much with breath control, vowel placement, and give you great sheet music for your rep book. 100% recommend :-)

Michelle and Robert are very professional and motivational teachers. They explain everything from voice training to singing very thoroughly, and always create a bright atmosphere. Although I have only taken a few lessons during this shelter in place, I have seen significant improvement in my singing.

Hi I’m Chloe and I began my musical career singing with the Barrington Children’s Choir and eventually the Barrington Chamber Choir which gave me the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall, Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Windy City Live and much more!

I graduated with a degree in music from Harper and during my time there I sang with the community and select choral ensembles. I also studied piano during my time there and was featured as a soloist for the Harper Flute ensemble, the Harper Guitar ensemble and the Harper Jazz Lab ensemble.

My studio is designed to be a safe and encouraging space for students to challenge themselves and explore individuality with their voices!

Chloe is one of the best teachers I have encountered relative to her knowledge, skills, understanding of how to train children and her desire to see her students excel. She is vested in her students. Thank you for the awesome job you do with my kids. I have seen remarkable progress in their singing since you started ( I can say that because I am also a classically trainer singer)

We will look at classical repertoire including art songs, oratorio, and opera. We may also address sight singing if you are preparing for an audition. My teaching is very much influenced by my certification in Somatic Voicework™ The Lovetri Method. It is a body-based method of vocal training which is based upon voice science and medicine, traditional classical training, and various bodywork approaches. If you're struggling in a particular area of your voice, I can help you work through those issues.

"As a former master's student at The Eastman School of Music and a lifelong musician, I've yet to encounter a voice teacher as perceptive, honest, patient, and encouraging as Mr. Tompkins. One of the best pedagogues and technicians I've encountered, his repertoire knowlege and ability to discern what is hindering a singer's progress is quite remarkable. Within an hour of working with him, he was able to fine tune and efficiently improve what was impeding my progress. That 60 minute session was more productive than in an entire semester at conservatory. A world class singer, Mr. Tompkins is as accomplished a voice teacher as he is a performer. Highly recommended."

"I started lessons with Michael having done both contemporary voice and years of choir. But prior to training with Michael, I'd never really been coached as to how to properly sing in a classical style. He's allowed me to find an entire element of my voice I didn't know I had and made it incredibly straightforward to progress. I now absolutely love singing in a way I didn't previously think I would."

"Dani is really the best instructor ever. When I started taking lessons with her my goal was to prepare for a college audition. Immediately she helped me identify where I could improve my technique and offered a variety of exercises that suited me best. She is familiar with tons of classical repertoire as well as jazz and popular songs. I really enjoyed that she made my lessons challenging enough to help me grow musically, but always working on something within my reach. She also has many incredibly useful performance hacks to help get out the best of you when its time to be on stage. I am happy to say that all the time and our hard work was well spent. After I auditioned for the college I wanted I received not only the acceptance letter, but also a near full tuition musical merit based scholarship. Thank you so much Dani!"

"I am so excited about my voice lessons. I am a university trained classical singer with extensive operatic and art song experience who wanted to get back to singing after a long absence. I was looking for a teacher that could help me to navigate the changes in my voice due to the aging process and provide me with the tools to steady a vibrato that had gotten out of hand. Michelle and Robert are exactly what I needed. They have extensive and commanding knowledge of the voice and support mechanism and teach from the Italian “Bel Canto School” perspective. That is to say pure vowels, open throated but focused sound and a healthy, low laryngeal position. I am loving my voice again and it has only been 3 lessons. They are exceptional at finding the beauty in the individual voice and not requiring a “carbon copy” sound. One of the best things about my lessons is that they complement each other as teachers and find a number of ways to facilitate a natural and beautiful sound by articulating suggestions in many and varied ways. If the student is unable to reproduce the desired outcome by one method, they will find another way to achieve it. Not one minute of a lesson is wasted and each week brings quick and substantial progress. It has been a joy to work with them and I look forward to each lesson and the progress they bring. In short, I am thrilled."
