I am a guitarist, educator and composer based in New York City. I recently graduated from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, completing a BFA with Honors in December 2018. Since moving to New York, I have been able to study with some of the world’s finest musicians, including many I grew up listening to such as Lage Lund, Aaron Parks and Peter Bernstein. These experiences have given me an insight into music that I could not have gained otherwise, as well as opened me up to different varieties of jazz and styles of music. You can find me playing in jazz venues around the city such as ShapeShifter Lab.
Music has always been a part of my life, beginning to play my first instrument, the piano, at two years of age. Then, at the age of nine, I started learning the guitar. Like most young musicians at that age, I began this part
of my musical journey, focusing on rock, winning the Shredding Contest in the under 19 category at the Vancouver Guitar show when I was fourteen. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I became a dedicated jazz musician, discovering a true passion for this genre. During my high school years, I was featured in many honour ensembles and won numerous awards, the most notable being Most Outstanding Guitarist at MusicFest Canada, a national level high school music festival, in both 2013 and 2014. In the summer of 2016, I was selected to play in the Ottawa Youth Jazz Summit, an ensemble put together to feature Canada's top jazz musicians under the age of 25. I was honoured to have my musicianship recognized by winning the Stingray Rising Stars Award.

I am a recent Berklee College of Music graduate living in Chicago. At Berklee, I was the first rock/metal guitarist to receive the "Jimi Hendrix Award." This award is given to the best guitarist at the school. I've played and studied many styles of music ranging from classical, traditional, blues, country, rock, and metal. Besides teaching, I have a passion for songwriting and performance. Here in Chicago, I am currently playing with various bands and writing my own music. My teaching style is very "goal-oriented," and I will teach students to set short-term goals, medium goals, and then demonstrate to them how reaching the short and medium-term goals leads to accomplishing long-term goals. I envision teaching much like my teachings at Berklee where once my lesson was finished, I only wanted to go home and learn more. If you want to learn multiple styles from someone who is truly passionate about the instrument, I'm your guy!
Hello, my name is Michael! I have been playing guitar since I was 10-years old. Aside from being a teacher, performer, and songwriter, I would define myself as a "guitar nerd" because I love every aspect of playing. I still practice every day and have an insatiable hunger for new opportunities to play and learn. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of metal, rock, blues, country, and guitar. In my spare time, I enjoy writing music and playing more guitar. I graduated from Berklee in 2017, where I received the Jimi Hendrix Award. This is given to the best guitar player in the school. I was the first rock/metal guitar player to do so! I received instruction from world-class teachers such as Joe Stump and Norm Zocher. Besides teaching, I have a passion for songwriting and performance; while in Boston, I played and recorded with the melodic met
al band Black Trip. With Black Trip, I was fortunate enough to open up for such bands as Sabaton, Children of Bodom, Rhapsody of Fire, and Doro. Here in Los Angeles, I am currently teaching, playing with various bands, and working on my band's debut album.
I'm 2 lessons in and so far Michael has been a great teacher. He is exceptionally skilled and has a wealth of knowledge to share, as well as being very good at listening to what I am trying to accomplish and creating well thought out exercises to help me progress. Highly recommended!

Mr. Sylvester is one of the greatest. He is not just an amazing guitarist, but he is also very kind. He treats people with so much respect. He speaks to me and my mom so nicely. He is very patient. He has a deep knowledge of music and knows how to get the most out of even the least talented people (like me!). He doesn't ever get mad if you make a mistake or forget to bring your music notes. We were so lucky to find Mr. Sylvester.

Mark is a talented musician who plays and teaches multiple stringed instruments. His lessons are always informative and supportive. They are driven by the student’s interest, so anything you want o learn— styles of music, how to do a particular technique, music theory— you can bring to class. And every now and then he organizes a recital— terrifying but great practice!

I'm 25 and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music with a degree in Jazz Guitar performance. I currently work full-time as a freelance musician, I play in wedding/corporate bands, jazz groups, hip-hop bands, funk bands, pop bands, original music projects, and I also run a hip-hop/jazz group. My teaching style follows the "Music is Easy" mantra. Basically, I look at it as my job to take the intimidation factor out of music, and let it be what it should be, FUN! It's not to say we won't be learning theory, or getting our skills together, but it is to say that we'll be taking all the fancy lingo and breaking it dow
n for you in concrete practical ways.
In terms of what I teach that really runs the gambit, I teach most styles of contemporary guitar playing, and additionally can teach voice as well. I also have taken extensive marketing classes at the University of Rochester, which means that I can offer some key advise on music business and marketing strategies for your band. I also run my own booking agency, so if you want to talk shop on how to get gigs, which avenues of gigs make the most bread, and other things of that nature, I'm your guy as well!

I am Joe L. from Lebanon, New Hampshire. I started playing guitar at age 11. Over the years I explored many different styles such as rock, blues, metal and classical. As I further devoted myself to music I started playing the flute, saxophone, piano, and bass. My passion for music led to several successes including earning first place in Tuck’s Rock Dojo’s regional music competition as a lead guitarist and media appearances including The Herald and Valley News newspapers. I was also teaching private lessons at the time to students with various interests and learning abilities. Upon approaching jazz, I studied with Don Mock and Scott Mullett. Soon after, I was accepted to Berklee College of Music as a guitar performance major, during which time I performed with several ensembles and studied with significant artists such as Richie Hart, She
ryl Bailey, Bruce Saunders. Currently, I’m focusing on establishing myself as a performing artist and growing as a music teacher.

Joe is a great guy and musician, a really easy person to work with, talk to, and hang with. Most importantly he is an extraordinary musician, he knows his stuff, and he knows how to communicate it to a student. His knowledge spans far beyond a pro and his teaching skills surpass many "professional" teachers I have worked with in the past. Nothing but a joy every lesson. Joe has opened my eyes to what the fretboard displays harmonically. I am grateful for what he has given me. Thanks Joe!

While learning a new instrument is always difficult (especially one as physically/mentally demanding as the guitar), Joe is endlessly knowledgeable and always has a cool new trick to show me to make everything less daunting and more fun. It has been such a joy to be instructed by someone so funny, talented, patient, and kind. I cannot recommend Joe enough!
