Beginner banjo lessons. Basic technique, chords, strumming. So much fun playing songs!
Disclaimer: I am not a traditional bluegrass player. I am finding many students nowadays that enjoy the sound of banjo, but want to play modern music with it. I have had a great deal of success with this type of student, but advise anyone looking for traditional scruggs lessons to seek that out. Thanks!

I first heard Nick play about 4 years ago and a friend of mine took lessons from him. When I decided to start lessons, I naturally decided to go to him. As I went to his place, I thought, "Oh wow! I forget to ask my friend whether he's a good teacher!" I need not have worried. He's superb. He focuses on musicality: listening, hearing, enjoying; and then pulls out the technical things you could improve at and delves deep. I leave every lesson feeling great, and (proof of the pudding) people I jam with comment on how much my playing has improved. I'm an "advanced intermediate" player, but Nick also teaches kids, beginners, etc. In the age of coronavirus, our lessons are on Skype, and they are great, too. He comes out of jazz and plays trad as well as modern, but he also has an Americana band, and he knows classical, and the student before me is learning Hendrix-style rock. So no matter what direction you want to go, Nick is your man!

I’ve been trying to teach myself guitar from online videos and just started taking lessons with Nick. It’s making a huge difference. He’s worked on my posture, left and right hand positions, started me on basic ear training, sight reading and understanding of rhythm. He’s given me exercises to help with chord changes I’ve been struggling with. Nick’s a great musician who loves to play but also loves to teach, so a beginner with no music training can gain from his knowledge. He’s a kind, patient teacher and an enjoyable person to spend time with. My guitar playing sounds better already.

This was my first lesson with Nick. He is a very nice guy. He created a calm, relaxed atmosphere in his studio, and he was clear when he gave me particular instructions. His knowledge of music theory in general, and of the five-string banjo in particular, was quite impressive. I would recommend him highly to both a beginner and to anyone (like myself) who is in need of a refresher course. I am very much looking forward to my next lesson.

I specialize in 5-string banjo, using the three-finger (bluegrass) technique. More specifically, I use a hybrid style of Scruggs/Melodic/Reno bluegrass techniques.

Banjo is the cure for sadness. Fact. It is also an incredibly diverse instrument, capable of playing simple chord accompaniments, or playing hyper-complicated Bach Sonatas (seriously, it's a thing).

Lessons with me will cover anything and everything from basic chord shapes and picking patterns (rolls), to single note techniques, melodic playing, scales, improvising, song tabs, chord charts, song writing, jamming with friends, and playing by ear.

For banjo I usually assign listening homework to my students. I feel that music appreciation is a huge component of being a good musician.

"I've been taking Piano lessons from Michael for about 5 months. I am an adult and took years of piano as a kid. I decided to take lessons again when we bought a baby grand from a garage sale. I searched for a teacher that would be fun! This time I wanted to learn pop songs with chords; music that I enjoy. It has been so much fun but I'm also learning about music theory in a way that I really understand. Michael is patient, funny, and very talented. I tell him what song I want to learn and he picks it out by ear, writes it down, then helps me figure out the best way to play it. He has written a great book that breaks down all the chords so it is easy to learn and remember. I'm having a great time and keeping the cobwebs from forming in my brain!"

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
