If you are looking for a fiddle teacher who makes learning fun and who also teaches proper fundamentals (such as posture, finger position, bow control, tone, etc.), then I believe I would be a great fit for you. I have noticed that many young fiddle players learn songs quickly, but then come to a halt in their learning because they do not know the proper fundamentals to keep them going. Since I teach from a classical standpoint (I mostly teach classical violin students), I make sure my fiddle students are not just learning fun songs quickly, but are learning them with solid fundamentals. I use the American Fiddle Method, which provides a large number of fun and exciting fiddle tunes.

Have you ever wanted to play fiddle, but never knew where to start? Do you have trouble learning correct technique, practice strategies, or struggle finding good repertoire to learn? Well, you've come to the right place!
In our first lesson, I will likely ask you to demonstrate your level to me, either by telling me or showing me what you know. I will use this to better understand your strengths and weaknesses and go from there. You can expect to come away from our first lesson with some learning materials, a plan for going forward, and an encouraging start to our journey as musicians together!
Some examples of things students can learn from me include: expanding repertoire, ear training, music reading, improvising, jamming, music theory, and technique.
About Alani

As a teacher, I am extremely upbeat and encouraging! I meet students where they are and seek to make lessons enjoyable as well as challenging. I am absolutely passionate about bluegrass and old-time music! I began playing viola in 1972 at age 9, switched to fiddle (violin) in 2003, and have been performing in bands as a bluegrass fiddler ever since! Teaching is in my blood, as I was a full-time high school English teacher for 32 years prior to my recent retirement. I've been teaching fiddle students for the past five years, and have helped many beginning and intermediate students learn how to play songs and continue building their skills. I work primarily with training by ear, but can also help students learn to read music. If you're ready to "pull out the fiddle and rosin up the bow," then give me a call!
About Julie
I've been performing as a fiddler in bluegrass bands since 2003, and have absolutely loved my own journey as a musician! A lifelong musician, I started on viola at age 9 and played in school orchestra through high school and on into college, even as I earned my degree in secondary English Education

Kelvin's unparalleled enthusiasm for life and music shines through in his playing and teaching style. He shows a strong proficiency in many different styles and on multiple instruments.
He's reliable, experienced, professional, and a great guy all around. One of Kelvin's main strengths is his ability to convey a given subject matter in a way that is meaningful, constructive and easily understood.
I'm also a music teacher (private lessons and in the classroom) as well as a professional performer. I've found it to be a great pleasure working with Kelvin and I would strongly recommend him as a teacher and a performer."

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin. …
