I studied Voice at CCM and Indiana University. I am able to coach singers for auditions and train young people and adultsJazz Classical Opera and Music Theatre.

I’m Jacob, a Juilliard-educated baritone singing and teaching around the world. I currently offer remote lessons from my home studio outside Washington, DC. I teach consistent, confident technique in any style—classical to contemporary—and welcome students of all skill levels and backgrounds. My only expectations are clear communication, dedication, and a commitment to vocal happiness and health.

I hold degrees in music from the Juilliard School (‘18) and Brown University (‘13). As a performer, I sang the 2019-20 season in Strasbourg, France, following my European début in Salzburg, Austria. I’ve sung in major houses including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse.

I focus on creating a safe and free sound. Alignment is the basis a great technique. Each person is different, and knowing how to help them release unwanted tension is critical.

The vocal folds are the core of the sound, and must be given the utmost care and consideration. Proper hydration is essential. They are also muscles, that need strengthening exercises and time for them to change. This will improve your vocal endurance and range. As a highly trained voice teacher, I can hear if the vocal folds are behaving in a healthy and efficient manner. It is essential that your teacher understand how to care for these delicate components of the human voice.

Vocal resonance is how opera singers are heard without amplification. It can be enhanced through awareness and coordination of the various portions of the vocal tract. Students who are new to music can expect (from me) a patient teacher that will help them learn how to sight read new music and won’t be too strict with them. I am not an intimidating person, so I will make the lessons as friendly, professional, and productive as possible. I do, however, expect my students to learn as much as possible. I get joyful when I see someone learn something new and I enjoy singing as much as I enjoy teaching how to sing.

The voice is the instrument you play from the soul, and good vocal training can translate to all aspects of musicianship and life itself. I am passionate about what I do, and cannot wait to use my gifts to help you along your musical journey.

My qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Education, and 4 years of teaching experience. I have taught in the private and group settings, and received the Region I Music Director of the Year award here in Western Alaska.

In each personalized lesson, it is my goal that you feel encouraged and appreciated for the unique singer or learner you are. I will give you the tools you need to become a confident and composed performer and to reach your goals as a student. I will provide fun and interactive exercises that help you master the basics of breath, posture, tone, diction, and the foundations of musicianship. Students will learn how to prepare a song and how to present a song in dramatic and interpretive form. Students will learn how to prepare for auditions and competitions (choral, solo, theatre role, etc.), and how to overcome stage fright and other challenges that are unique to live performance.
