Learn the basics of running Ableton, including how to record audio, MIDI, I/O, using the effects section, triggering audio clips and loops, etc.
Having an ear for music of all styles and genres, I had an interest in playing music and instruments at a very young age. At just 5 years old, I took my first piano lesson. I studied with that piano teacher for another 10 years, working on technique, theory and classical music, including playing piano recitals as a performer. I practiced piano to become a solo classical musician. Then in middle school, I joined the symphonic band where I was exposed and learned to play instruments in the percussion section, including drums, xylophone and marimba, and other instruments. At the same time, I joined the middle school jazz band. This was my first transition both as a piano player and musician into a new genre of music and playing. Needless to say, I fell in love with the music. In 2005, I auditioned and was the only pianist accepted into the c
lassical piano department in the School of the Arts High School of San Francisco. There I went through rigorous classical training and learned vast amounts of repertoire. At the same time, I still studied and played jazz in the high school Big Band, Latin Jazz band and small jazz combo. It was during this time that I deeply focused on not only Jazz music and improvisation, but also Salsa, Latin Jazz, R&B, Funk, Pop. Basically all other forms and styles of music. I learned what it means to be in a band and how to make an ensemble sound good and to make an audience like and cheer for the music. I was lucky to have bands and musicians to play with all around San Francisco, including jazz festivals.
After graduating as the only student to study in the Piano department for 4 years in my graduating class, I was accepted with scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. I started my first semester in 2009, and declared a Piano Performance and Jazz Composition Dual Major in 2010. At Berklee, I studied under amazing piano teachers to focus on my jazz playing and technique and repertoire. Some of the classes I took included music theory, ear training, composition and arranging, scoring and analysis, even guitar and bass labs. As well, I was the main piano player for the Berklee Salsa Ensemble for 3 straight years. I was also involved with bands and playing recitals, shows, clubs, outdoors and indoor venues throughout Boston and Massachusetts. I had the honor of being hired by Berklee to travel and play along with other selected students at the Carnaval de Barranquilla honoring Joe Arroyo. This was the most memorable musical experience for me yet, as I played along great musicians for hundreds of people in a theater, including Joe Arroyo sharing the stage with the band.
All of this experience and training is what I bring to my lessons and tutoring sessions. I teach my students how to prepare themselves for any kind of musical situation, from music theory and technique, to piano playing and repertoire, and understanding and playing all kinds of styles and genres of music. Most of all, I teach my students to be unique in their musical endeavors and to bring out their own voice through music. And the most important element of all, the happiness and joy it brings to the students and others.
*** Lesson Details *** In my piano and music lessons, you will be learning music theory, proper piano technique, ear training, sight reading, and repertoire. It will be up to the student to determine what genre and style of music they want to learn and study. It can be anything from classical music, jazz, or even Funk and R&B music and more. My students will also develop an ear, meaning that instead of only focusing on written material and music in sheet music format, they will learn to hear intervals and chords, and also play or sing back melodies.
My teaching style is very easy to get along with. I don't pressure or push students by being too strict. When learning music, being hard and strict gets the student nowhere. I approach the student with listening and understanding. It's my job to see the students advantages and keep them strong, as well as working on bringing up weaknesses and what's needed to make the student excel in both playing technique, and all other musical aspects.
When it comes to proper piano technique, I always teach my students with "Hanon, the Virtuoso Pianist in sixty excercises", and "Scales, Chords & Arpeggios" by James Bastien. After 3-6 months as my student, you will progress in your technique skills, ear training, repertoire and memorization

We love joey!!! He's a great teacher because he teaches the way that is right for the student. He comes to our house twice a week to teach our 5-year-old son, who wasn't particularly interested in learning the songs from the book, scales, etc, so Joey changed it up to make it fun for him by focusing on making up songs and improvising (while still sneaking in some of the technical stuff). Our son looks forward to his lessons so much! Joey is obviously a masterful pianist and could teach at any skill level.

Joey is a gifted musician and even more gifted teacher. My 14 year old has been taking piano lessons with Joey for about eighteen months now. We lived in San Diego for a year and my son started in person with him for close to ten months. Joey's teaching style and connection with my son was so effective that we decided to continue lessons via Skype. My son is a highly gifted kid for whom lots of learning comes easily. Not so with music, but he is inspired and motivated by Joey. Joey's ability to meet the learner where they are and push them beyond their normal comfort zone is impressive. I am very, very glad that we found him. Joey's teaching style is engaging and encouraging while holding the learner accountable to practice, development, and growth. I wholeheartedly recommend him for both in person and online lessons.

Joey has been teaching piano to our now 8 and 11 yo boys for more than a year. Although my kids aren't musical per say and don't tend to practice during the week, thanks to Joey their piano skills are impressive! Without ignoring the theory, Joey was able to adapt his teaching style to their personalities and has taught them to play their favorite songs. My younger son was so excited to to learn Fall out Boy's "Centuries" he would run to the piano to practice! Both boys are clearly proud of their accomplishments and love to show them off to their friends. Thank you Joey!
I've produced 100+ tracks using Ableton and my plugin library including Nexus, Serum, Sylenth, UAD, DadaLife, and Native Instruments.
Christiaan is a multi-talented performer in theater, opera, and pop music. He played Gaston in the Broadway tour of Beauty and the Beast. Something of a bad boy, he was kicked out of Opera School for singing jazz, yet he went on to earn three music degrees, and work with opera legend Marilyn Horne and avant-garde composer Jake Heggie. Now he's in New York studying with Lady Gaga's teacher and singing his own arrangements of Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, and John Mayer at Carnegie Hall while writing and recording pop songs in Nashville and the U.K. Look for his new single That's When You Know.
Christiaan enjoys seeing people succeed, so his approach to teaching is a combination of play and practice. Ultimately we sing because we want to bring people joy, yet to do so, we must hone our talents to perfection. By mixing the joy of music with disci
I just had my first lesson with Christiaan. He was amazing. Gentle, very positive, and really good at observing and figuring out my strengths and weaknesses. He's also inspired me to learn with his love of music and thoughtful approach.

I was blown away by his knowledge and assessment of the skills I should prioritize. My mind was blown several times. Excellent pedagogy and very personable!

I've had a great experience taking lessons with Christiaan! I've had about 10 lessons total now. As someone who doesn't have a background singing, I was definitely a bit nervous going into it, but that didn't last long -- Christiaan's friendly and extremely talented. I especially appreciate that he provides context about posture, history, anatomy, etc. and that he took time early on to learn about my goals. Last but not least, I'm happy with my results so far!
Even if you've never touched Ableton before, I will get you creating right away :) As a self-produced synth-pop artist under the moniker mini bear, I have experience teaching at both beginner and advanced levels. Having taught one-on-one in various environments, including at Apple, I have the ability to translate seemingly difficult concepts into relatable information. I have a strong background in music theory, songwriting, and synthesis, and I will show you how you can best use Ableton as a creative tool to reach your artistic potential.
As a vocalist, synth-player, composer, and producer, I use my knowledge and experience in technology based professions to explore the relationship between music and tech.
As a “synth-enthusiast” who uses analog synths in sound design , I have cultivated a vivid musical aesthetic under the moniker mini bear, with which I have written, produced, and released 2 EPs and 1 full length album. Illustrating a sound rich in 80s referenced romantic nostalgia, mini bear has garnered praise and recognition from respected media such as Grimy Goods, Impose Magazine and international indie press. I am currently an active performer in Los Angeles, and I have played at local venues such as The Echo, Resident, The Hi Hat, Bootleg Theatre, Moroccan Lounge, and The Satellite.
My role as a teacher has grown over the span of 10+ years. As a Creative
Trainer at the Apple store, I taught customers Logic Pro in both private one-on-one and workshop settings. I have also taught workshops on Ableton topics through Play Like A Girl and IO Music Academy. In addition to teaching adults, I have taught music production and Ableton to children ages 10-15 at Girls Rock music camp. I have been producing in Ableton Live for the past five years, and I provide consulting sessions to determine work flow efficiency. Content and teaching styles are customized based upon the learners skills and learning styles. I currently teach music production and synthesis at IO Music Academy in Hollywood.
Lauren is the best. I had taken a few online tutorials in Ableton, but it wasn’t until I had help putting all the pieces together in person that it started to click.
She is friendly, patient and she has an incredible understanding of Ableton. Highly recommended and grateful for her lessons.

First lesson with Rob was very good. He was patient, got a feel for the student level and encouraged learning and creativity. Awesome experience.
March 18, 2019
Of all my year's of formal education, I can confidently say my time as a student under Rob was perhaps the most significant. He demonstrated a tremendous amount of patience, and genuine care into my development, and took me from a guy who was VERY rough on the drums to a proficiency level.
On top of building the physical mechanics and techniques to become a drummer, Rob put even more emphasis on how I internalized, felt, and heard the music. Each lesson focus was equally weighted with theory, practical use, real-time listening, and execution - developing all my senses and slowly building my foundation so I could take the material and know how to grow upon it outside of the lesson room.
Lessons with Rob is more than learning a cool fill, or a fun groove - even though those do happen - but it is learning how to become a musician, and I'll carry the lessons learned from him with me forever.
Ableton is an incredibly powerful resource for all music activities. It can help you learn music theory, help you practice your instrument, create compositions, and so much more. Let's hang and make some music! We can make beats, new compositions, record new projects, make backing tracks for practicing, you name it!

My name is Mark Farry. I am a DJ, music producer, and sound healer based in Portland, OR. I have been producing electronic music for 12 years and DJing actively for 3 years.
My history includes: operating a music blog in 2008 to ride the wave of electronic music's popularization, co-founding an online community of house music enthusiasts in 2015, hosting a weekly radio show at KPSU in 2016, launching a podcast focusing on storytelling through melodic house & techno music, and more recently organizing music festivals in the PNW region. I have played in low-light bars and on elaborate festival stages. I have written music to dance wildly to and music to meditate calmly to. I have played music to friends at home and I have played music to strangers in a foreign country. I seek to share the insights I have gained along my journey.
Mark is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and friendly to work with. He has been helping me mix music in Ableton and I am very excited about what we have created. Mark is quite articulate about music which allows us to thoroughly examine the different sounds and elements in a song to better understand what we like and what could be improved upon. I recommend him as a teacher to students of all ability levels and am excited for us to continue working together.
