The main goal of an Ableton class is to be able to effectively use all the tools that you are given to achieve your specific goal. Each student will have a different idea of what they want to create with this software, and its really important to be able to remove the technical obstacles and get straight to the creating. I will enable each student to be able to better visualize their projects, and I will train their ears to be able to better listen to sound such that they can understand the specifics behind creative decisions. As a producer you have to take both microscopic and macroscopic views when it comes to a piece of music, understanding how both a small sound can affect the progression of a story though music, and how the story itself unfolds over time. This can all be done through practical training in Ableton Live.

Learn Ableton with an experienced master.

Matt Starling has taught Ableton as a professional music teacher in the Salt Lake City area public schools for 8 years, and teaches Ableton at the college level at Salt Lake Community College.

Starling is also a successful producer, composer and band leader. In 2009, he founded the critically acclaimed Salt Lake Electric Ensemble, an experimental computer music group of 10 members where each musician plays Ableton. Starling's various music projects have been published on nine record labels, including Philip Glass's Orange Mountain Music company. His music has been streamed and purchased over 150,000 times.

Starling holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Utah and a Master of Music Technology degree from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

Matt has been amazing. He's an absolute expert and has a great teaching style. I'd recommend him to anyone. For real, it's been awesome learning so much and he's made me a much better musician.

Matt does a great job of adapting his instructions to match where the students knowledge is currently. I started taking lessons from him after spending a few years learning bits and pieces of ableton on my own. Matt quickly figured out where I was, what I can do to improve what I've learned, and helped me make steps moving forward. No matter you're experience level I can't recommend learning from Matt enough. I leave every lesson with so much more knowledge than before that I can immediately start applying to my own work and work flow. Thank you Matt! Looking forward to many more lessons.
Chris
I have done several "music production" lessons with Matt online. He is extremely flexible, which has been a big plus for me since I live in Denver and use Studio One 4. Even though his expertise lies in Ableton, the lessons have still been helpful as a Studio One 4 user. Matt is EXTREMELY knowledgeable. He has been able to satisfactorily answer all of my questions. During our lessons, we will work on songs that I am developing. He will listen to the track and suggest areas of improvement. Rather than just telling me what to change, however, he always explains why it would be helpful to make those changes. I've already noticed that I am independently making those improvements in my songs since meeting with Matt. While I can't speak for Matt's other areas of expertise, I would highly recommend taking lessons with Matt for any production/mixing needs!

I have been teaching Ableton to high school students at Fusion Academy Oak Brook since fall 2019. I always go over the fundamentals and key commands first. They may seem insignificant to learn right away but the good habits will make your workflow much more efficient! My classes have explored genres such as trap, classic hip-hop, house, lo-fi/chill-hop, and video game soundtracks. We'll go over topics such as drum and MIDI programming, sampling and looping, and audio effects. Ableton can be an extremely fun and inspiring tool for people at any skill level.

About Matt

I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, in a Philadelphia suburb. I am classically trained on piano, and I have been playing for 15 years. I also have been playing guitar and writing songs for the past 9 years. I have written and played with lots of bands around Philly, and my abilities have grown e

"Alex is a great teacher, willing to go at your speed. I can tell he's very qualified to teach any level of student. I'm brand new to DAW software, and I really needed someone to help me work through it from step one. Now I feel like I've got the ideal situation going on, where I work on it on my own during the week, come up with a million questions, and then I can ask him and solve my issues once a week. Very nice guy, more than worth the price of the lessons."

He gives really good feedback on projects that you might be working on. He is really well-versed in all aspects of music production - not only in sound design and mixing but also in songwriting and also can talk about difficult topics like inspiration and creativity in a unique way. If you're serious about music production, I would certainly recommend taking lessons with Dan."

"Mateo is a person who wants and like to share their knowledge. Ableton is his tool, whatever you need to know how to do on ableton, he can help you because he is a man that know their tool (Ableton).
I learned from him all about sends and signal flow in Ableton: groups, post and pre fader sends, i/o.
If you take lessons with Mateo, you can learn how to use the Ableton's Instruments, effects and midi effects. How use it? when use it? and what are the best for specific tone, color or whatever.
VST, Plugins, Mixing, Mastering and many more if Mateo teach you."
