About David

After graduating from Salford University, England with a Bachelors degree (Honors) in Music and Composing I worked for a short time as a commercial "jingle" writer, before moving to San Diego, marrying my dream girl, and opening my own music recording, teaching and production studio. From there I h

I'm comfortable teaching the banjo in a variety of styles but will typically start in Bluegrass. I can teach both Scruggs style finger picking and basic to intermediate Clawhammer. My comfort zone is higher in the Scruggs style of playing however.

I also teach beginning to advanced Tenor Banjo (CGDA Tuning). Though it looks similar to the 5-string bluegrass banjo, the Irish Tenor Banjo and Tenor have only 4 strings and are played with a traditional guitar pick (a "plectrum" - though a "plectrum" banjo is tuned different then these other 2) and strummed rather then plucked with individual fingers.

I can teach the Plectrum Banjo as well (CGBD Tuning) but will be teaching you on a 5 string banjo that I only play with four strings.

About Jared

I am overjoyed and grateful to say I have been teaching music since 2008. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience. More importantly, I love teaching and playing music with a passion. I play a great variety of instruments and have had the opportunity

I play and teach both clawhammer and fingerpicking banjo styles. As a performer, I mostly play traditional and contemporary classical music, though I also have performed and recorded quite a bit of folk music on banjo. I enjoy working with clawhammer students as they create their own arrangements of tunes.

About Mark

I am a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter working in a variety of genres. I regularly perform around the Washington, DC, area as a solo guitarist, as a singer/songwriter, and with numerous classical, folk, rock, and musical theater groups. My primary musical influences include folk and

Mark was very patient yet informative. He pointed out areas to improve upon and complemented me where I had been working hard. I was comfortable with his online lesson because he looked me straight in the eyes as though we were face to face. I know he will teach me how to play my mandolin; so looking forward to the next lesson!

Mark has been a great teacher for this adult beginner! I take lessons in clawhammer banjo and ukulele with him, and his easy-going nature and skill in identifying ways to improve make it a joyful experience! Highly recommend.

Mr. Sylvester is one of the greatest. He is not just an amazing guitarist, but he is also very kind. He treats people with so much respect. He speaks to me and my mom so nicely. He is very patient. He has a deep knowledge of music and knows how to get the most out of even the least talented people (like me!). He doesn't ever get mad if you make a mistake or forget to bring your music notes. We were so lucky to find Mr. Sylvester.

About Richard

"When Ryan accepted me as a student almost 2-1/2 years ago, he took on the daunting task of teaching both mandolin and banjo to a complete novice...who also happened to be nearly 70 years old! Ryan is a technically accomplished professional player who patiently encourages and supports his students as they find their own musical voices. He himself is a broadly cultured and serious student of musical theory, who welcomes and is happy to answer questions about why things do - or don’t! - work musically. Studying with Ryan has been a splendid experience, and an excellent investment of time and money."

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
