Learn the subtleties of what makes country guitar playing its own unique style, and learn how to break away from the typical "rock template" to set your country style apart from the rest... and make it your own!

About Steven
Have you always wanted to learn how to play the piano, guitar or electric bass? Or maybe you've just felt like brushing up your musical knowledge and playing skills? Now’s your chance to fulfill those dreams!

About Me: San Francisco Bay area pianist/guitarist/bassist; I've been playing music for over 50 years. I'm classically trained with a solid foundation and knowledge of music theory, and have over 40 years experience teaching, recording and performing. I have done session work and/or performed with members of Journey, Santana, Jackson Browne, Eddie Money, The Doobie Brothers and Greg Allman to name a few, and am currently teaching piano, theory and bass to Mike Dirnt, the bassist for Green Day. Let me take my education and experience and pass them on to you!

My main goal as a music instructor is to pass along my love and kno
wledge of playing music to my students, always vigilant for sharing shortcuts that will help the student to achieve their lesson goals faster. Some teachers teach only out of books. I am not such a teacher. Books solve the problem of learning music in generalizations and by their very nature, cannot take into consideration personal issues a student will encounter.

Most students are able to learn enough of the necessary mechanics at the first lesson to actually play something before they leave that lesson. This is important because they realize that playing music IS possible. I always enjoy the look on their face when they realize they have actually “played” their instrument at their first lesson.

I am not the sort of teacher who yells and screams if the student comes in unprepared. I realize that people come to me for a variety of reasons and I work with them with whatever they bring in. I am patient and if a student is not understanding a certain aspect, I bring into play alternate approaches. Not everyone assimilates information in the same way. Learning music should be an enjoyable adventure for the student and I venture to say that my students enjoy coming to their lessons. We have fun, and we learn.

My current rates are $40 per half hour, $60 per 45 minutes and $80 per hour, and believe me... you will get your money's worth! Also I should note that due to my current students, plus teaching at a private school in Sausalito and recording sessions, my time constraints only allow me to teach lessons out of my home studio in Alameda. Hopefully this will work for you as well!

I've been taking lessons from Steven for I think two years now and he's helped me so much not only in reading music but also in ear training and in my song writing. He's incredibly patient and fun to work with. He also has a really nice cat.

I have come so far in just a short period of time. Tim has been extremely patient with me and he is a wonderful teacher. I really didn't think online classes would work for me, however it has been an amazing experience.

Caleb makes every class enjoyable. He is very enthusiastic about guitar AND about teaching it. His knowledge of the instrument and music theory is mind blowing. He is great at explaining guitar theory in several different ways to make sure I understand. I never feel overwhelmed or lost. He is patient, kind, and always willing to answer the same question no matter how many times I ask it.

Most beginners new to guitar give up within the first week because they either don't know where to begin or they use generic methods of learning (i.e. online videos, books, etc.) Learning and playing guitar is a personal experience, and when you find your style it becomes one of the most rewarding decisions you can make. My approach to teaching is to guide students through fundamentals while making the learning experience fun and finding a sound they can produce that will bring the joy of music from their fingertips.

About Gregory
I am a professional singer/songwriter with a specialty in acoustic guitar and country music. I've recorded in major studios and home-based studios and have a passion for getting more people into making their own music.

I first started to play guitar over 20 years ago, and I still remember how tough those first couple months can be to stay motivated. I'm here to help you learn some fun things which can ease you into playing and keep you or your child's interests.

When I first started playing guitar in middle school, my teacher was pivotal in keeping me engaged and I'm thankful for his influence and use it as a base for the my students.

As a teenager, I regularly played country blues and folk guitar, sometimes performing publicly. I like to incorporate singing into my guitar lessons so I sometimes teach strum and chord patterns besides the single note playing style featured in the Hal Leonard method book. Although I rarely play guitar professionally because of my emphasis on piano, I still have a lot of knowledge to pass along to a student learning acoustic styles.

About Dave
After high school, Dave Holt began setting his poems to music which led to a reenactment of the well-known songwriter fable, moving from his birthplace, Toronto, Ontario, to California to follow his dream of becoming a successful songwriter. He and his wife Chappell collaborate on composing, recording, and performance. After a full time music adventure, he followed the muse of story-telling and poetry into San Francisco State University’s Creative Writing program (B.A. ‘93, M.A. ‘95). Though mainly of English/Irish ancestry, he’s also descended from a great story telling family, the Debassiges of West Bay First Nation Ojibwe (O-jib-way), notable on Manitoulin Island (Ontario) for preserving the 300 year history of their leaders, elders, and warriors. He accompanies himself singing and drumming when telling his stories, also published in
his book, Voyages to Ancestral Islands, and the published poems in four anthologies, one of which earned a Pushcart Prize nomination. Dave has done community service work in the American Indian community for several years.
