I am an active performer and teacher of bassoon, and am still an active learner on my instrument. Lessons with me are fun, engaging, and informative on this unique and often difficult instrument. I strive for my students to love the bassoon and enjoy working on their craft, whether a beginning band student or an aspiring professional. I earned my Masters of Music in Bassoon Performance at University of North Carolina, Greensboro and my Bachelors of Music in Bassoon Performance from Sacramento State University. I also can help with reed making and adjusting, I make all of my own reeds and sell them on Etsy. My page is called ReedySetGoBassoon

The bassoon is an amazing instrument! The nickname for the bassoon is the "clown of the orchestra". I am so excited to teach you more about the bassoon! I am an interactive teacher who can assist you in many ways in regards to learning how to play the bassoon including; correct posture, new breathing techniques, correct fingerings, alternative fingerings, half-hole technique, improved sight-reading skills, greater music theory knowledge, and performance skills. I recommend using the Essential Elements for Band book series. Once we connect and I can find out more about your playing level we can find the perfect book for your. One of the most talented musicians I have ever met. While trombone is his main instrument, he plays and instructs exceptionally well on a myriad of other instruments. He is calm and patient with learners and has a very rich knowledge base when it comes to musical literature and technique. I highly recommend Justin Hammis for anyone interested in private lessons.

Bassoon:
A woodwind instrument in the double reed family that typically plays music written in the bass and tenor clefs, and occasionally the treble. Appearing in its modern form in the 19th century, the bassoon figures prominently in orchestral, concert band, and chamber music literature. The bassoon is a non-transposing instrument known for its distinctive tone colour, wide range, variety of character and agility. Listeners often compare its warm, dark, reedy timbre to that of a male baritone voice. Someone who plays the bassoon is called a bassoonist. The lessons will consist of breathing and finger techniques, learning notes and rhythms and how to read. Very quickly songs will be incorporated and as the student progresses we will work on learning scales and how to solo.

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

Galina has been working with our 8th grade son on bassoon for a year and he loves it! She is a kind, generous, and knowledgeable teacher. She has patiently prepared him for auditions, improving his technique and musicality, but she also makes lessons fun by playing duets with him. She is also teaching him to make reeds. And she is very easy to work with in scheduling, and has seamlessly moved to remote lessons in the current situation. We are lucky to have found her as a teacher.

About Joshua

Hi! I am Joshua, and I am a woodwind doubler. This means that I specialize in all of the woodwind instruments, but my primary instrument is Oboe. I am a third year college student majoring in Oboe performance, and I have made the intercollegiate honor band in South Carolina. I have also attended th

Josh is a fantastic clarinet instructor. He’s enthusiastic, patient, and finds the right balance of fun and challenging exercises. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well the online lessons have gone.

If you've ever had to tell a coworker how to do something on a computer that you do 100 times a day without thinking, you know how hard it is to verbalize the things you do with muscle memory. Joshua is a whiz at finding exactly the right way to explain how to adjust my mechanics to make progress on my instrument. I played flute in HS over 30 years ago and was a little nervous about starting over at my age but Joshua is completely supportive and positive and fun. I also happen to be a science teacher and I've loved being a student again because it's helping me relate to my students and to think about feedback - so it's like my flute lessons are coming with bonus lessons on how to teach. I've learned a lot from Joshua in just a couple of months.

My 16 year old is always over scheduled and Kristilyn has been more than willing to work around his schedule when the need has arisen. She has also helped him choose appropriate music for several auditions and practice for the auditions. She has stretched his limits on the bassoon with out frustrating him. We highly recommend Kristilyn as an instructor."

"Kristilyn was my first bassoon instructor and has continued to be my favorite! She took me from being a mediocre, subpar high school bassoon player to a proficient bassoon player in under a year! She helped me audition and qualify for my high school regional honor band, as well as making me want to continue playing bassoon in college. I owe much of my improvement and love of the bassoon to Kristilyn. :)"
