I started teaching oboe while finishing my bachelor's degree, and have found it to be incredibly rewarding. I love sharing my knowledge, helping my students advance and find even greater enjoyment playing. I feel very fortunate because as a regularly performing musician, I have the opportunity to immerse myself in many styles of music. Though it is incredibly important to learn the basics of oboe, and to become educated in the classics, expanding one's pallet with pop, jazz and world-music, for example, may also come into play.

During lessons we'll focus on technique building exercises, pieces from the standard oboe repertoire, and will often play duets together. If you are in school and would like to bring your band/orchestra music to lessons, feel free!

Since reeds are such an important part of being an oboe player, I teach reed adjustments for students playing at an intermediate level, and for advanced students, reed making from scratch.

My philosophy is that music is ...

About Alison
Thank you for visiting my profile!

As a professional musician, I have played in various ensembles including orchestras, opera companies, wind ensembles, chamber groups, musicals and more. The Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra (BCCO), presenting 3-5 concerts a year, has been my orchestral home since 2013 and I have had the privilege of playing principal oboe with them all throughout.

As a music educator I have years of experience teaching privately and in classrooms, for individuals and groups. I craft lessons to the needs and interests of each student, to ensure they are getting the most out of our time together. Many of my students enjoy, for example, video game and TV show music - so, these pieces are some of the repertoire we'll work on together. My goals as a teacher are to instill proper playing technique, guide how to
shape the music, establish good practice habits, and above all find ways to connect students with the music they're studying. At the end of the day, we play music because it's fun!

Degrees:
Master's in Music Performance, NYU
Bachelor's in Music Education, The College of New Jersey

*** Equipment ***
Students should own/rent their instrument, assigned methods book(s)/sheet music, reeds, reed soaking container (for oboe), a music stand, neck strap (saxes)

I am a professional oboist with forty years teaching experience as well as a DMA degree. I help students learn to play the oboe with a beautiful sound, a complete, effective technique, and a feeling of ease while performing. Because of my outstanding teaching ability and extensive experience, I am able to show students how to really master the challenging areas of oboe playing, such as embouchure, breath support, articulation and reeds. I also work with students on developing their unique qualities as creative musicians, through an understanding of phrasing, note grouping and experience of improvisation.

About Terry
As a professional oboist, I have performed with the Bach Aria Group, Lazar Gosman's Tchaikovsky Orchestra, and the Manhatten Chamber Orchestra and Choir of Sacred Music. I am currently a member of the North Shore Pro Musica chamber music group and the Phoenix Trio. During the past forty-five years, I have free lanced in the New York metropolitan area and in Boston, including performances of symphonies, operas, Bach cantatas and chamber music works. I can be heard playing the English horn and the duduk (Armenian oboe) with David Darling and the Adagio Ensemble on the CD "In Tune", released by The Relaxation Company and the oboe and duduk with the improvisation group "Hidden City", on the CD "Another Country". I have also released a CD of original solo duduk music titled "Duduk Creations", which is available on Amazon and cdbaby.

I am
a graduate of the Musicianship and Leadership program with Music For People, an organization devoted to music improvisation. For the past ten years, I have led improvisation workshops at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. I am also the director of the Adult Chamber Music Program
at SUNYSB.

I received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in oboe performance from SUNY Stony Brook in 1996 where I studied with Steve Taylor, and a Masters of Music degree in oboe performance from SUNYSB in 1977, where I studied with Ronald Roseman. I received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1975 and attended Amherst College from 1970 to 1972.

I find both oboe playing and teaching to be deeply inspiring. I feel that playing music is one of life's most wonderful experiences. It's uplifting and meaningful
to me when my students improve and play beautifully.

A long-time oboe player with a BA in Music Studies eager to pass on techniques to budding and blossoming players.

About Jean-Paul
Home-grown Mercedian back after many adventures! I'm eager to share my knowledge of Russian, French and the world around.

I began my career as a linguist in Russia, learning the language intensively on the street and in the classroom, while also teaching English to businessmen. Through connections, I was able to dabble in legal and academic translation.

I continued my education in France, mastering the language while also getting to sing in classical choirs and play oboe in wind ensembles.

I have most recently completed a teachers' exchange program with the French Ministry of Education. I taught 5th thru 12th grade in two schools in beautiful Lyon, France. I gave evening lessons to engineers and logistics specialists wishing to improve their English. Adapting to different teaching styles needed for each age group was challenging challe
nging but I have always enjoyed working with such diverse groups of students.

The many challenges I have faced have molded me into a resilient teacher. I plan lessons carefully but am quick to adapt to students' needs. I will be glad to help you meet your goals with your language-learning.

My mission is to help guide you on your quest to making music. I ask very little in return but your full satisfaction in knowing you made the right decision today. Should you accept our time together will be well spent focusing on your strengths in music and eliminating the weaknesses.

I invite you to listen to music, explore different genres and make your mind up as to what you would like to play. Sound is everything so that is my first goal and the hardest to achieve being from a distance. My anecdotes will prove to be useful in getting you to produce the best possible tone quality on the
instrument. Technique is what truly unlocks all doors in music having the ability to play anything comes from scale practice and patterns. Metronomes are a vital part of your success.

Finally reading and basic music theory is the essential skill that separates men from minnows in the sense of making music consistent. The discipline necessary to do this is minimal but important. I trust that you will excel in my class because my methods are tried and true. If at the end of the first lesson you feel you will not progress on your mission with me I completely understand but do think that will be unlikely as I want to share with you my deepest thoughts on how this can be done and in return you will receive the best education possible.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to providing you with some great lessons!
