I have been playing and teaching oboe for over 35 years. Many of my students have gone on to play in universities with scholarships, but more importantly have developed a love of music. I was the founder and co-artistic director of an award winning chamber group having two on-going subscription series. Within the first few lessons you will be able to read musical notation, understand basic music theory, and play simple songs. Depending on your ability, I will choose the right method book for you. I love working with students of all ages and can't wait to meet you! My teaching style is relaxed, but highly structured. My former students made great advancements with my guidance. However, no advancement can be achieved without the student putting in the necessary time at home to practice their instrument.
I have been a public school music teacher for 30+ years. I am an optimistic, enthusiastic person, who will help you learn music reading in addition to music playing. I started on piano as a young child, and studied clarinet from elementary school through college, where I focused on french horn. I have a BA in Music Education from Humboldt State University, where I also earned my teaching credential. I have taught beginning, intermediate and advanced band and orchestra, in addition to choir and jazz band. I have been music director for over 10 middle school musicals. In my spare time I enjoy my two dogs, going horseback riding, and reading. *** Lesson Details *** I am very friendly, and encouraging to new students. I have a lot of patience for those who are new to the study of music. I can also be more demanding for those who have learned the basics and want to improve their playing. I am a proponent of teaching the basics of music reading and common musical terms. I can teach music through a variety of curricula, and will work with my students to choose a method that best suits their goals. I have a large music studio in my home that has a separate entrance, which is conducive to music making (with it's own bathroom). I accept students 8 years of age and older. *** Studio Equipment *** Has a keyboard, but no drum set *** Travel Equipment *** I prefer to teach in my home studio. *** Specialties *** I have been teaching band, orchestra & choir in public schools for 30+ years.
This instrument may sound like a duck at first but with a little instruction and practice can be a beautiful instrument. This is also great if you are looking for a scholarship to either high school or college.
I have my degree from The Eastman School of Music and have played rock and roll for decades. My joy is bringing people to music and music playing. As Music is an infinite language it has always been an eternal joy to teach and relate to my beloved students what music can say to them and what they can convey to others. *** Lesson Details *** "If music is not fun it is useless" I urge my students to play their instruments not practice! I will teach music theory as I teach you any style or all styles. Patience is the key and I am constantly filled with it. You will progress as you learn the ins and outs of your instrument and music. *** Studio Equipment *** Room setup for lessons, with small keyboard and instruments. Ample parking available, parents can sit in on lessons and waiting area available. *** Travel Equipment *** The student is expected to provide the instrument including full keyboard or piano. *** Specialties *** all
I like to begin with the Essential Elements series. I have had a lot of success with my beginners in this series. I also encourage my oboists to bring and play with a tuner. Having a great ear for pitch is absolutely necessary for playing the oboe.

With over 10 years of teaching experience, I specialize in working with students of all ages and abilities. Whether you're starting off playing oboe, switching from another instrument, or getting back into playing after a break, I look forward to helping you reach your goals! Lessons incorporate music theory, technique, and lyrical expression. Students are welcome to bring school and audition music to lessons. If needed, students will be placed in an appropriate method book. I tend to use the Rubank series and the Barret Oboe Method, as well as level appropriate solo pieces. I hold a Master's Degree in Oboe Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. During my studies I studied with Carolyn Hove and Humbert Lucarelli.
