I'm engaged with the process of teaching bassoon students from the beginner level up to the advanced level. I make sure to make them aware of the importance of proper cleaning and care for their bassoons. I'm a patient teacher and know that everyone learns differently and at different speeds. I like to play duets with the students to make the lessons fun. I'm knowledgeable about bassoon solo pieces and orchestral repertoire and am able to help to help students prepare for solo contests. I emphasize the development of technique through slow scales and gradually expand the range. I'm able to add a little humor in the lessons to make the lessons fun. I view myself as a student in the process of teaching, too. I'm also engaged with teaching students proper embouchure, breath support and talk to them about reeds and am able to teach them reed making and adjustment as they become more advanced. In addition to bassoon I have experience playing Bb Clarinet and am able to offer ...

My daughter learned more from Joseph than her other bassoon teachers. He was reasonable and ensured that she was learning bassoon technique, not just songs. I truly appreciated his dedication to her learning and passion for the bassoon.

My method of teaching is motivating and rewarding, and my students always succeed on their scale tests, Region and All State auditions, and college auditions. Time flies so quick. I was looking back at TakeLessons.com and realized that my son had his first bassoon lesson with Kristilyn on Oct 8 2017. Now he is a high school senior and planning to pursue his music education at the college – that is a testimony to Kristilyn’s contribution.

I am an active performer and teacher of bassoon, and am still an active learner on my instrument. Lessons with me are fun, engaging, and informative on this unique and often difficult instrument. I strive for my students to love the bassoon and enjoy working on their craft, whether a beginning band student or an aspiring professional. I earned my Masters of Music in Bassoon Performance at University of North Carolina, Greensboro and my Bachelors of Music in Bassoon Performance from Sacramento State University. Bassoon:
A woodwind instrument in the double reed family that typically plays music written in the bass and tenor clefs, and occasionally the treble. Appearing in its modern form in the 19th century, the bassoon figures prominently in orchestral, concert band, and chamber music literature. The bassoon is a non-transposing instrument known for its distinctive tone colour, wide range, variety of character and agility. Listeners often compare its warm, dark, reedy timbre to that of a male baritone voice. Someone who plays the bassoon is called a bassoonist. The lessons will consist of breathing and finger techniques, learning notes and rhythms and how to read. Very quickly songs will be incorporated and as the student progresses we will work on learning scales and how to solo.

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

"Galina has been working with our 8th grade son on bassoon for a year and he loves it! She is a kind, generous, and knowledgeable teacher. She has patiently prepared him for auditions, improving his technique and musicality, but she also makes lessons fun by playing duets with him. She is also teaching him to make reeds. And she is very easy to work with in scheduling, and has seamlessly moved to remote lessons in the current situation. We are lucky to have found her as a teacher."

She helped me audition and qualify for my high school regional honor band, as well as making me want to continue playing bassoon in college. I owe much of my improvement and love of the bassoon to Kristilyn. :)"
