Private Bassoon Teacher

I'm a professional, classically trained bassoonist that plays with orchestras, chamber ensembles, and rock bands. I've been teaching private lessons for over 15 years and I'm available to work with students at any age and skill level including beginners, intermediate students who want to improve their skills (or are picking up the bassoon after time away), as well as advanced students looking for audition and performance coaching. Lessons with me are always positive, supportive, and tailored to each individual's goals and needs.

My method of teaching is motivating and rewarding, and my students always succeed on their scale tests, Region and All State auditions, and college auditions. We can work on major and minor scales, beginner to advanced etudes, solo literature, audition etudes, orchestral excerpts, contemporary music and extended techniques, music theory, and more.

About Kristilyn

I am a classically trained bassoonist with a passion for all types of music. I received my Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in bassoon performance from the Ohio State University, and my Masters of Music in bassoon performance from Arizona State University. In addition to holding faculty positions

Mr Yakov is very pleasant, patient and professional. He makes learning fun. One of my daughters is very shy and particular. I was concerned for her first violin. But she ended up loving the lesson and the instructor. We did some lessons online and at his studio. During the online lesson, the connection with our internet was horrible. He could hear her playing but she couldn't hear him. Yet, patiently, he got creative and taught the lesson with my daughter through chat. The environment of the studio is comfortable. You can tell he's passionate about what he does. That left me with a great impression of him. We look forward to more lessons with him for as long as we can.
Thanks Mr Yakov!!!

"I couldn't be more happy with the bassoon lessons that Jack has with my daughter. The online lessons are so convenient and a great way to work with this fantastic teacher. Jack's teaching style is extremely positive and supportive. He encourages my daughter to push out of her comfort zone and grow as a musician. The progress that she has made with him is incredible. He is very knowledgeable about music and integrates music theory, sight reading, and rhythm studies into their lessons. You can see that he loves playing and teaching the bassoon and that excitement carries over to my daughter. She never wants to put her bassoon down after their lessons! Lessons with Jack have been the best thing we've done to support her playing bassoon."

"Our daughter had taken in person lessons for years. When her instructor retired we really didn't know what to do. Bassoon instructors aren't very common where we live. She was very nervous about taking on line lessons but Alyssa put her at ease. It seems like she could really relate to Alyssa.
Alyssa really helped her get through many of the issues she was having with a new instrument and new high school band.
We will go back to her again for sure!"

"Kristilyn was my first bassoon instructor and has continued to be my favorite! She took me from being a mediocre, subpar high school bassoon player to a proficient bassoon player in under a year! She helped me audition and qualify for my high school regional honor band, as well as making me want to continue playing bassoon in college. I owe much of my improvement and love of the bassoon to Kristilyn. :)"

"Am a beginner with musical background on other instruments. Have only had one lesson so far, but it was great. Kristilyn communicates concepts simply and clearly and puts you at ease. A true educator, she understand where you are having problems and knows how to help you fix them. She not only explains the 'how,' but also the 'why,' and teaches with comparisons to common every day actions to illustrate concepts as they relate to playing the bassoon. She answered questions before my lesson, which greatly aided me as I was deciding which brand and model bassoon to buy. I feel lucky to have found such a person to take on a bassoon beginner. Can hardly wait to advance to be able to mine the knowledge and experience of this resource in more depth."

"My daughter has been taking lessons from Jack since August 2017. Along with helping a student with performance, he educates the student on bassoon history and the unique qualities of the bassoon. He is great at starting at the student's level, but will challenging the student in subtle ways. At times he can be very entertaining. He shows his mastery of the bassoon (occasionally performing to demonstrate the nuances of a difficult piece of music). My daughter has enjoyed learning from Jack."
