Christina D.

Brentwood, NY

I have singing professionally for 8 years in many different settings, including opera, recital, concert, competitions, and more. I have an open mind when it comes to repertoire, but I believe a solid foundation of vocal technique is the most important thing. My lessons are structured around learning proper technique with the use of vocal exercises and songs.

About Christina

I am a classical singer and pianist from Wisconsin! I started playing music at the age of three on the piano and began voice lessons at 15. While in graduate school in Las Vegas, I started teaching both voice and piano lessons and found how much I loved imparting my knowledge to others and watching them make progress.

I have performed leading roles in Operas and soloed in orchestral concerts and recitals. I mainly perform opera/classical but love musical theatre as well. My performing experience has taught me a lot which I am eager to pass on to my students! I have been teaching with
Takelessons since my move to NYC in 2011.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, I try to create a lesson environment that is relaxed and open but still efficient. I have specific requests for you both in and out of lessons so you can reach your potential. In the first lesson I will assess your needs as a student. You will have fun learning, choosing songs and discovering the joy of performing. I am flexible with the repertoire that you want to work on as long as we can apply the principles we have learned. I work hard to make sure you learn and accomplish the most you can. In the long run, though, it's up to you to be successful!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Keyboard and quiet room.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical technique in both voice and piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Craig is comfortable teaching all ages and abilities of piano and voice. Students should expect a relaxed and friendly environment that is open to change and interpretation depending on the individual. Lessons are completely catered to each individual student's needs and wants. Depending on what the student (and parent) is looking to get of it, lessons can be anywhere very loose and free form to strict with clear cut goals. Students can study any styles they wish to study while still learning good technique and musicianship. Technique and musicianship will always come first in lessons. Students can also expect to have the style of teaching used to be catered to their particular learning style.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide some music, forms, recording equipment, and a music stand, but students must provide their own instrument, books, and any other materials I would like them to have such as a notebook or binder.

Craig's Patience and Knowledge

Craig is very knowledgeable and patient. I am an older student (64) who started lessons at age 4 and then my playing became sporadic, sometimes not playing for weeks at a time. Craig has been focusing on open chords and using the Jazz repertoire to put concepts into practice. I tend to be a little hard on myself and Craig has helped me with that, too. His suggestion of working on songs two measures at at time has been very helpful

Great teacher!

Craig is an excellent teacher and a very nice, person. He teaches piano to three of us and easily adjusts his lessons for each of our competency levels. His instructions are easy to follow and his suggestions for mastering skills work. Our lessons are friendly and low pressure. I would highly recommend Craig.

Briana D.

Bethpage, NY

Pop, Acoustic, Rock, R&B, Jazz, Singer/Songwriter, Alternative music

About Briana

My name is Briana and I studied music education at Hofstra University specializing in voice. I have my degree in Music Education K-12 B.A. I'm part of many ensembles there such as the Chorale and Chamber choir. I did my student teaching in Island Trees and Syosset school districts. I am currently the Choral Director at Island Trees Memorial Middle School. I direct two choirs; 5th/6th grade mixed chorus and 7th/8th grade select chorus. I have sung the national anthem for the Nassau Coliseum for many of their events. Being I have been taking professional private voice lessons since age 7, I want
to share what I have learned with my students! I have prepared many children for NYSSMA / various performances and look forward to helping my students grow not only as great singers but musicians! I studied contemporary music techniques (belting) for 10 years and operatic techniques for 8 years. I am currently going for my masters degree in music education and taking a vocal jazz private study at Hofstra University.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons will help you find out what type of singer you are! My goal is to inspire you to be the most well rounded musician you can be, while having fun with all types of music!

During each lesson we will begin with some basic warm ups that will not only figure out your range as a vocalist, but expand it as well. We will always have a piece of music we are working on which will be worked on at each lesson. As far as the repertoire of music, I am extremely lenient. I am always looking to see what my students are interested in learning and try my very best to accommodate to your sense of style. I can teach you the proper way of belting out an Adele song to singing one of Mozart's operas. Each song that we tackle will be "torn apart" as I like to say it. We will work on the diction using Italian vowels, the rhythms, and the notes. If there is a problem spot we will work on it until you have succeeded and feel good about it! Toward the end of the lessons, most times I will have a short sight reading example to allow you to explore the melody line and give it your own sense of style. This is all to make you become a better all around musician!

I am very big into breathing technique, Italian vowels, expression and intonating! This will all be incorporated into the song we are working on at the time.

To make your practicing at home during the week a lot easier, I often record our warm-ups and you singing your song. I then email it you for that week so that you can remember what we did and see what spots we worked on so you can improve while practicing!

I am so excited to be a part of your musical journey and help you grow! :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room w/ electronic piano and seating for parents if they choose to sit in on the lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect my students to have a keyboard or piano and a radio so I can play their tracks.

*** Specialties ***
I am currently specializing in opera voice. I studied music performance, theory, contemporary music, and recording in studios for the past 10 years.

Jon S.

Islip, NY

General singing lessons (for modern music) is one of my favorite things to do. I have an appreciation for every genre you could possibly imagine, and I am always looking for new music. No matter how you sing, or who you want to sound like, I can help! I have piano skills and guitar skills, as well as recording devices, to help supplement our lessons as well.

About Jon

First and foremost, I love singing, guitar, and songwriting. Music is a huge passion for me, and I love to share and experience music with others through teaching.

My greatest strength is my enthusiasm for both teaching and music. I would love to help you learn, and to help you advanced as a musician, no matter what your skill level.

I graduated from The Crane School of Music in 2012 studying under Dr. Deborah Massell. I have been singing for my entire life, and as a trained classical tenor over the last 8 years. I am also a self-taught guitarist of over 10 years. I have been teaching fo
r over 7 years, and I have loved every minute.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons can vary a lot based on who I'm teaching. I love working with advanced musicians, and also absolute beginners! I am a fairly relaxed teacher, and will always be there to support you, no matter your goal. We will set out your strengths and weaknesses, and work on everything with vocal demonstrations, listening examples, and practice! I enjoy bringing in lots of aspects of music to the lesson including theory, aural skills (If you like), and music history. Within 6 months, you will have a more extensive knowledge of theory, you will know your songs backwards and forwards, and you will be ready to sing or play anywhere at anytime!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Digital Piano, Alvarez Acoustic, Gretsch Electric, Recording Equipment, Music Stands

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own acoustic guitar that I can bring to all lessons. I expect the student to have their own keyboard for vocal lessons, or guitar if we are having a guitar lesson, and for them to have their music for all lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am a trained classical tenor through my college experience, but in my personal life I am an experienced songwriter for rock, pop, bluegrass, jazz, and even metal. I have been playing guitar for over 10 years, and play every genre that I can find.
