With a degree in English Literature, reading comprehension has been the most important aspect of my academic career. I know how to help you confidently navigate and come to a more complete and nuanced understanding of what you are reading, the main morals, motifs, and main purpose of each piece you read.
Our focus will of course be on coming to a complete and correct understanding of exactly what you are reading. Depending on the level you are at, our sessions will eventually inspire you to develop your own bold and unique opinions on everything that you read going forward.
Bringing a wide range of experience in Writing, English, Communication, Language, and Business, I help to make lasting adjustments that improve writing, communication, and overall efficiency over the long term. My practice started out and continues to function as an academic tutoring practice for

Critical reading and reading comprehension stem from critical thinking skills. When tutoring children in reading, I try to use the Socratic method of teaching as much as possible so they can find the answers to questions by themselves and the right answers make sense to them. More importantly, I encourage them to enjoy reading and explore their own creativity. Online tools like ReadTheory and Quill (aligned to the Common Core curriculum) help me assess their reading levels and see which key concept areas they are struggling with. For school or test prep, I teach older students the most straightforward strategies to quickly and confidently find the answers in a passage or text. I also work with them to break down complex material into manageable pieces so they can better understand what they are reading.
For more than 11 years, my goal as a tutor has been steadfast: I help students learn more and make progress in their studies. I don't just teach them how to count, read, and write: I show them how to build on their skills and reach their true potential. I know from my own experience how hard it is t

Using both a phonics and whole word approach, I emphasize letter sound and high-frequency word recognition. Some students hesitate to read out loud out of fear of making mistakes. However, by creating a comfortable atmosphere, I enable a student to learn easily in a supportive environment as we explore interesting passages of all types, including creative fictional, history-based, science-based, and contemporary.

Knowing how to read is one of the most powerful skills a person can have. Reading can open the doors of imagination, to worlds where magic and fictional creatures exist, and where anything is possible. Reading allows us to learn history and enables us to study new subjects in a more engaging way. Without reading, the world becomes a much smaller place.
Reading goes beyond just novels and history books, though. Knowing how to read allows you to better understand and communicate with others. When you have strong reading skills, the world is your oyster.
In developed nations, literacy seems like a given, with rates nearing 100%. Reading, however, is a privilege and an advantage that doesn't come easily to everyone. A private reading tutor can help if you or your child is str
uggling to learn to read at an age-appropriate level. With one-on-one instruction and personalized lessons, you or your child will soon learn to love reading and everything it offers.
Ready to improve your or your child’s reading skills? Allow us to help here at TakeLessons. We offer experienced and professional reading tutors who work with students of all ages. Sign up for reading comprehension tutoring sessions today, and your reading skills will improve in no time.
Why Work with a Professional Reading Tutor?
The number one reason to take reading lessons is that they work. Several studies done by the United States Department of Education have demonstrated the efficacy of one-on-one reading tutoring. Private tutoring has been shown to improve grades, test scores, and students' confidence compared to students who receive no individualized tutoring.
Reading is arguably the most important subject, especially at the elementary level. Reading isn't just about entertainment and great stories; the ability to read well and comprehend what you read is essential to learning every other subject. Without reading skills, children can't effectively study math, science, history, foreign language, philosophy, or any subject that sparks an interest. Reading is literally a gateway to the world's knowledge, and a private reading tutor will ensure your child has the keys.
Are you a beginner looking to learn the basics of reading? Or are you a more advanced student wanting to master your reading skills? When you match with one of our reading tutors, they will assess your current skill set and level. They will then determine the right path to take to improve your reading ability. No matter where you are in your reading journey, a tutor can help. Perhaps the best part of all is that every student receives private, one-on-one instruction. This allows the instructor to deliver customized lesson plans and give each student the individual attention they deserve. Every tutor is patient, encouraging, and professional.
The Benefits of Online Reading Comprehension Tutoring
By now, you’ve probably noticed how many classes are available online these days. After all, many elementary and high schools are turning to a full virtual classroom experience. Not to mention, many colleges and universities have been offering online classes for many years. As these remote learning opportunities become more common, students and instructors are beginning to prefer the virtual experience. Online courses give everyone the flexibility to learn where and when it is most comfortable for them. They’re also convenient and hassle-free.
In addition to online courses, you can also receive online tutoring. Here at TakeLessons, we offer reading comprehension tutoring sessions entirely online. As long as you can connect to the internet, you can receive tutoring instruction wherever and whenever. Simply sign on using your smartphone or log on with a computer and web camera.
When you choose your online reading tutor, you can review their availability to ensure it aligns with your schedule. Maybe you want to learn in the morning before heading into work. Or perhaps you would prefer to receive instruction over the weekends. Whatever you prefer, you will find a tutor that can accommodate your needs.
The Best Way to Learn to Read and What You'll Study in Classes
You can find plenty of free reading lessons online, but the best way to learn to read is with a private reading tutor. In private lessons, you or your child will receive the type of personalized instruction and undivided attention that simply isn't available in a larger class setting or with online videos. You'll overcome individual challenges and pick up new skills fast.
Plus, every personal lesson is different. For example, reading classes for adults differ greatly in terms of teaching methods and course content from reading lessons for kids. Private teachers design each lesson to meet the student's unique needs, such as preferred learning styles, interests, and coordination with classroom learning. In private lessons, students stay motivated and interested, while learning at a comfortable and effective pace.
Kids and parents looking for an added level of convenience and scheduling flexibility can work with an online reading tutor. This allows you to connect with the perfect teacher, no matter where in the world they are. Taking reading lessons consistently is easy when you can fire up a lesson with a push of a button.
Sample Curriculum for Beginner or Elementary and Middle School Reading
In elementary and middle school, children develop the foundations for literacy. Having a strong start in reading is essential to continued learning across subjects. Beginner lessons will ensure your student stays on track for academic success. Your private teacher might cover the following topics:
- Sounding out words: alphabet, letters, and syllables
- Word recognition
- Irregular spellings
- Read increasingly lengthy and challenging books
- Develop close reading and comprehension
At these early stages, it’s important to keep enthusiasm and motivation levels high. You or your child’s reading tutor will make learning the basics fun and rewarding. For kids, this can involve using silly songs, while adults may be interested in learning quotes from famous figures. Subject matter can be catered to you or your child’s own unique interests so that the next reading lesson is something to look forward to!
Sample Curriculum for Intermediate or High School Reading
Once reading at grade level, children should begin to improve their reading comprehension and develop analytical skills. High school English classes typically introduce students to the tools that help them develop these skills. An intermediate reading teacher might cover the following topics:
- Expand vocabulary and learn how to infer contextual meaning
- Identify and analyze the use of literary devices
- Identify themes and symbolism
- Understand and identify genre (bildungsroman, tragedy, comedy, gothic romance, etc.)
- Study periods of literature (Classical, Romantic, Transcendental, Modern, Enlightenment, etc.)
- Homework help
At this point is where some of the rewards of reading can really come through. Intermediate readers are ready to take on some hit book series such as Harry Potter. The more you read, the better your comprehension skills and vocabulary become. So, get lost in a good book and watch your reading skills improve!
Sample Curriculum for Advanced or College Reading
Students in college-level literature courses typically reach advanced reading level. At this level, students should begin thinking about literary texts in a larger context to develop their critical and analytical skills. Topics discussed in advanced lessons depend greatly on the student's individual goals, needs, and interests, but your private tutor might cover the following subjects:
- Develop a thorough literary analysis, thesis, and argument
- Use primary and secondary resources
- Study and learn to apply various contexts for criticism (comparative, historical, mimetic, etc.)
- Develop a concentration on specific periods, authors, or genres
- Possible focus on reading in another language, such as Old English
The sky’s the limit once you’ve reached the advanced stage! You can even think about sharing the gift of reading with others once you’ve developed this level of competency.
