Wendy P. Chicago, IL

Singing of all kinds begins with healthy vocal technique. Learning the correct warming up and use of the voice and breath is essential for a career in singing with any longevity. I use a combination of classical (bel canto) and contemporary styles of singing to bring out the best in each student's voice. We will work on breathing, range, voice blending, resonation, flexibility, projection and articulation.

About Wendy

I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For the past 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic roots band that performs an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Professional, Effective, and Challenging Lessons

Wendy is probably the most professional and talented voice teacher I have worked with in my time singing. She was able to quickly diagnose and help me begin to address difficulties I was having, but was also very proactive in helping me find repetoire that I enjoyed and that meshed well with my voice and my musical interests. She is extremely knowledgeable about the mechanics of singing, as well as the interpretation of song, and really challenged me to think through my singing in a way I hadn't before. Thanks!

Musical theater has been my passion/life since I was young and I can help you sing all the various styles that musical theater calls for today. I can especially help you prepare for auditions and learn how to balance the singing and acting into it.

I've been singing in choirs for over 6 years and was looking for a way to get into singing in college, and I found Serena by a lucky chance and have seen her weekly since January - not only have my vocal skills and techniques improved considerably since then, but I've become a lot more confident in singing other genres.

Serena is a fantastic teacher and is very flexible with availability - she always tries to make the lessons work on your time, and as a full-time student juggling two jobs, that was exactly what I needed. Every lesson is great - it's a healthy mixture of singing, genuine conversation, and discussion of techniques and ways to become better at something I genuinely enjoy.

I would definitely recommend her to beginners and returning singers alike - she is extremely passionate about what she does, and it really pays off when you can confidently sing a brand new piece after having worked on it for just a few lessons!

A patient and skilled instructor

I was so nervous about taking up piano again. My experience as a child had been less than stellar. Serena was exactly the instructor I had hoped for - she quickly assessed my ability and was able to adjust her teaching style/lesson accordingly. I was a bit nervous at first, but her patience helped me relax and enjoy the lesson.

Becky A+++

I was Becky's voice student for three weeks over the summer of 2013 at the music camp that I went to (I went for cello, but I realized that singing was something I had always loved to do and I knew it would help me develop my skills as a musician.) I had never taken a voice lesson before, and I was in the middle of a camp which included some very advanced singers, but Becky made me feel so comfortable with myself that I wasn't afraid to approach her with any problems I had with my voice. She taught me so much in 6 lessons especially about natural human breathing, and about how to express myself with my voice, in a way that only let me feel more and more comfortable with myself and with any sounds I made (and there were a lot of ugly ones!). Becky is an absolutely incredible singer and didn't only teach me about how to sing, but also about the history of vocal performance in a way that showed me how influential it is to the rest of music in general. Becky was also my camp counselor, and outside of the voice lessons she is an incredible person-- she's hilarious and veerrrry spunky and great to be around as a friend and a person to look up to. She really motivates her students to reach their full potential by nurturing their passion for singing and providing an incredible amount of love and support to all her students, regardless of level.

I couldn't be happier - One amazing instructor

I am only on my second week of vocal lessons with Rebecca Sorensen, but in this short amount of time she has seriously made such a positive impact on my love for music and singing. I used to never believe that it would be possible for me to sing in public in front of anyone without hyperventilating, but she has been extremely supportive and helpful and I am gaining confidence. When I say that I never believed I could sing in front of people I am serious because I have taken prior singing lessons that were useless because I would tense up and not really sing. If I did sing because I was physically forced to, I would pretty much just whisper. Rebecca has been so encouraging and I couldn't thank her enough because I truly am obsessed with music and I adore singingjust in private or at a karaoke bar. Her visualizations and little tricks have worked wonders! I am starting to understand everything better. They really help and I absolutely trust Rebecca. I am finally learning how to sing properly and not just mimic my favorite singers and Broadway stars. I was worried about having messed up my vocal chords in the past and she was honestly concerned and helpful. She gave me one of her tea bags that she uses to help make her throat feel better, which was really sweet. She went above and beyond and also did a little research on the symptoms and told me what I could do if it was really bothering me. Now that probably isn't necessary since I am a tad bit of a hypochondriac, and I know this story seems a little random, but to me it really reinforces her amazing character and dedication to what she does. She is a great teacher with an amazing voice and I am so excited for her career as well as the rest of my singing lessons! I have a few months left and I am confident that she will help me. I'm ecstatic since I thought I was a lost cause! This is the best Christmas present ever! Thank you so much Rebecca, from the bottom of my heart!

Benjamin K. Chicago, IL

I have extensive training in musical theatre and have been in several productions. I am currently getting a M.M. in vocal performance at the Chicago College of Performing Arts and have extensive vocal training. I teach an open throat technique (appoggio) that allows the singer to sing with freedom, and access their entire range evenly. I also work with students to develop style, interpretation, languages, and acting ability.

About Benjamin

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in the arts and natural sciences. I'm a voice instructor, math tutor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance. I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I am currently performing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat at the Booth Tarkington Theatre. I was a finalist in the MasterWorks Festival concerto competition. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz and pop. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be produced in a ...

I have only had a few lessons with Benjamin so far, but I'm happy to say that each one was fun and educational. In past vocal trainings I focused on my chest voice, but Benjamin is helping me to discover and control my head voice in ways that I didn't think I could. At first I was worried I wouldn't find a teacher who could help me with college audition preparation, but sure enough, Benjamin went through the process and had plenty of great tips that I can use this coming year.
Thanks Benjamin! :)

I'm a 31 year old singer in a Indie Rock band called Readen Roark. I have had little to no training prior to practicing with Benjamin. I was looking for someone to help me find my voice and help me figure out how to actually sing. After many years of trying it on my own and listening to vocal dvds, I bit the bulllet and swallowed a little bit of my pride and found Benjamin through takelessons.com. I immediately found results as far as realizing how I WAS singing isn't suppose to be how I AM to sing. When you sing, the feeling should be somewhat easy. Ben is helping me find that spot and easiness. I am eager to see my improvement as time moves on. Not to mention Ben makes the lesson enjoyable and easy going. It is something I look forward to and hope to continue for a long time to come. I am even tempted to bring him some of my band embers and work with the band as a whole. When the next album is ready for vocals, I will definitely try to have him there. Highly recommended.

Joel is an amazing teacher! He is knowledgeable and very passionate about his career. His style goes far beyond just a point and sing approach, he makes it a point to get to know each of his students and goes above and beyond to learn their voice type and learning style so he can better understand how to train them. In the four years I studied with Joel he not only trained my voice but also trained me in proper singers health and etiquette (Vocal health tips, Proper stage dress etc.) He helped me prepare multiple theatre and college audition repertoire and also inspired me to pursue a career in vocal performance. I would highly recommend Joel to anyone who wants to further their knowledge or begin a new journey in the world of music.

It’s hard to put into words what Joel W has done for my voice. His teaching ability extends far beyond just imparting proper technique, though he does that extremely well. The way he is able to delve into how my mind works, how I experience music, and how I learn and then to teach me in language that I am wired to understand is an incredible gift. He not only expedited the process of my progress but he also opened the door for me to discover the rich artistry of singing: the textures, the colors, the emotions, and the carefully crafted details of a beautiful voice.
Far from a cookie-cutter approach, he helped me to find my unique voice and celebrate its strengths. He is always eager to give me the tools I need to become the singer I have always hoped to be and, under his tutelage, I cannot believe how far I have come."

I trained with Joel in Arizona for a year. I gained confidence as a singer as I started to understand and apply the technique. You know that he is knowledgeable because of the degrees he carries but I would add that he is knowledgeable in the operatic technique and the voice overall because of his own application that he demonstrates in the studio to get his point across. He has a great voice and you can hear him utilizing the technique that he teaches. He makes it a point to get to know you and how you learn so that he can better explain things. He is serious about his profession, owns his own opera start-up, and is also a performer. If you are willing to work, you will not be disappointed by the results you will hear.
I can confidently recommend him to anyone who is looking to learn how to sing and/or improve their voice!
