About Sarah

OVERVIEW

First of all, thank you for taking a look at my profile! I hope that we can work together to find your unique voice and style. As they say, "be yourself...everyone else is taken."

For that reason, I do not take the same approach for every student I teach. Everyone learns differently, and I want to make sure I am teaching you in a way that will make your learning experience the best it can be.

I do expect you to have goals of your own, but I do have a few goals for you. I want to help you:

1) develop a healthy singing technique that will bring longevity to your career or
hobby.

2) learn music efficiently and independently.

3) develop good practice habits.

4) learn basic ear training/sight singing.

Now, here's a little bit about me. I've been studying voice for 10 years and teaching consistently for over 4 years. I received my M.M. from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and my B.M. from Wheaton College. Since graduating in 2013, I have been working and performing in the Chicagoland area. Some performance highlights include but are not limited to performing with Light Opera Works, CCPA's production of the Chicago Premier of Daron Hagen's Amelia, and performing with the Grant Park Chorus.

I look forward to working with you!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide books. I expect my student to provide a piano.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in operatic singing. I received my training in opera; however, I also have training and performance experience in musical theater. I believe I am well equipped in several genres.

My 4 year old son loves having Miss Sarah visit! She comes prepared with printed music, stickers, and lots of fun voice and rhythm games to play. She changes up the activity every few minutes, and her expectations are appropriate for his age.

Wendy P.

Chicago, IL

Singing of all kinds begins with healthy vocal technique. Learning the correct warming up and use of the voice and breath is essential for a career in singing with any longevity. I use a combination of classical (bel canto) and contemporary styles of singing to bring out the best in each student's voice. We will work on breathing, range, voice blending, resonation, flexibility, projection and articulation.

About Wendy

I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic/electric roots band that performed an eclectic mi
x of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Within the past year I have re-energized my theater and cabaret career, appearing at Davenport's Cabaret, in a new solo show, as well as productions at Big Noise Theater and Stage 773. I've also completed two short films and started working on my own web series, about my life as a singer/voice teacher. I also have an art song project consisting of original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

lease note that 15-minute sessions are ONLY available for Skype. In-person sessions must be a minimum of 30 minutes.

My approach is designed to train and condition the entire body as an instrument, not just the oral portion of the voice.

My method of assessing and meeting the needs of each student enables me to assist them in bringing out the very best in their capabilities. If you desire quality, effectiveness and noticeable improvement in your singing, writing, public speaking or overall performance, then I am the coach for you!

I have been trained in Classical, Appoggio, jazz/improv, Seth Riggs' speech-level singing and other methodologies of singing and speaking.

If the answer is "yes" to any of the above, then you need my assistance. I will empower you with the tools you need to deliver the best performance.

I currently have multiple songs in mainstream rotation (under an alias), with over 400 spins per day worldwide and am highly-acclaimed by many jazz, pop, r&b and hip-hop notables. I am also a NESTA certified wellness coach. I have the privilege of being a classically-trained pianist and vocalist, having studied at Sherwood Conservatory of Music, Vandercook College of Music, The Second City, University of Chicago, ETA Performing Arts Center and many other fine institutions.

My five-octave vocal range, impressive whistle-register and fine-tuned ear have afforded me opportunities to work with many popular artists. Additionally, I sing in seven languages(English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Mandarin and Latin) and am adept in aiding my students in overcoming speech impediments and enhancing their own vocal range.

I also specialize in post-surgical voice re-immersion and students with special needs including down syndrome, autism and speech impediments.

My methodology helps students feel comfortable and each session is tailor-made to the student's individual needs.

Children love working with me because I make learning fun and they have a high retention rate of the techniques that I teach them. I am easygoing, funny and offer a minimalistic casual and relaxed environment for everyone.

My adult students have a blast because our lessons feel more like a friendly visit. I pull your potential to the forefront and together we create perfection.

I am excellent at preparing people for public speaking engagements, competitions, showcases and concerts and even help develop a winning show lineup and presentation.

Group classes are also available.

If your voice isn't becoming to you, you should be coming to me!

We had a very good first lesson. I had an online class so the only drawback is that there is a little limitation when trying to focus on head and neck placement specific to voice coaching with the distance learning. However Margo was Great! I'm looking forward to our next session.

Margo does a great job of tailoring the lessons to your needs. As a beginner and even having a much lower register than her, she's helping me make large strides after only a few lessons

What I like about Margo is that she will help you to relax, and she is very personable. She makes the lessons fun! While in conversation, she is able to help me not only figure out my vocal range, but made me use my diaphragm to put strength into it (and not sing from the the throat). If you want a teacher who is knowledgeable about technique and is dedicated to help you reach your potential, she IS that teacher!

Michelle Kei I.

Arlington Heights, IL

Let me help you develop your REAL VOICE and hone your skills as a performer.

About Michelle Kei

Michelle Kei I., a soprano of Japanese and American heritage, "uses her strong dramatic soprano to slice through the orchestra" in a varied repertoire that encompasses Verismo to Broadway. Possessing a captivating stage presence and praised as "superb," "gifted," and a "constant breakaway from the rest of the vocal pack," she has entertained audiences on stages around the world.

Those are the first two sentences of my professional biography. I thought I'd use them to get the ball rolling.

Ever since I can remember, I've always been a performer. I come from a very musical family. I was al
ways singing! I sang at home, in church, in show-choir and musicals at school - basically anywhere I could find an audience!

When I decided to go to college to study music, I chose the prestigious School of Music at Indiana University. I wanted to sing Broadway, but my father encouraged me to study classical singing first, so I'd have the foundations for a bulletproof technique that could endure a long and demanding career. I'm so glad that he did!

Who would have thought that I would learn to LOVE opera?!? It had everything that Broadway did, and so much more! Plus, I learned to fill a theater with the sound of my voice and soar over the orchestra WITHOUT A MICROPHONE!!!

Would you like to learn how to do that? I can show you how.

Let me help you find your REAL VOICE!!!

What you can expect from me:

- I will provide a supportive and effective work environment.

- I will make recommendations on repertoire based upon your goals

- I will provide you with an individualized regimen of study based upon your strengths and development, not a standardized format of study.

What I expect from you:

- Learn the musical selections we choose. Your lesson time should be used for improving your technique, not learning your music.

- Leave your outside life at the door. It will be waiting for you when you leave.

- Enjoy the process. Experiment. If it doesn't work, try something else. Take constructive criticism as an opportunity for improvement, not as a personal attack.

- Commit yourself fully! Be engaged. The benefit you receive is equal to the work you put into the process.

Professionalism is the first word to come to mind regarding Michelle. I have had over a decade of music and voice lessons with various teachers. By far, Michelle is the most professional educator. Michelle understands that our voices are like any other instrument, and has a holistic approach to the health of the body and voice. With her guidance I am confident I will sing healthy and strong well into my senior years. Personality would be met second word for Michelle. She is very engaging and as excited about my progress as I am. She inspires the confidence that we can reach our goals and beyond. This has been time and money well spent.

Eric M.

Evanston, IL

Students will work on vocal technique, both through vocal exercises and through application to repertoire. Genres covered include anything to classical repertoire to musical theater to pop-style singing. All of my training will be from a classical standpoint, because it is my belief that this is the basis for all healthy singing, regardless of the genre.

About Eric

I am a classically trained professional opera singer in the Evanston area. I received my bachelor's degree in vocal performance at the University of Miami and am currently studying for a master's degree at Northwestern University. I just moved to Evanston in September and am looking to take on students of all ages who are interested in classical, musical theater, or pop/jazz singing. I can also teach beginning piano skills. Let me help you unlock your most beautiful sound!
