I my own twist on the Estill method to help illustrate the different sounds made in Broadway singing (legit, operatic, belt, etc) through diagrams and other visuals of the vocal chords themselves. My technique focuses mostly on the anatomy of the voice but also includes other visuals to help my students place their voice in the proper way to produce the best sounds and to not hurt themselves.

With a focus on Broadway style of music we use a specific technique to achieve that Broadway sound. All other vocal and musical techniques are the same.
I started my journey with singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When I got to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion. Then I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I am a vocal scientist at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education so I was able to learn all the band and orchestral instruments on top regular classes and voice lessons. I took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further ...
Lessons include exercising that lower register which is so important for the "Broadway belting" quality, as well as upper register work to balance that big lower sound. Repertoire incorporates pretty much anything that is performed in musical theater.
ABOUT PENNY R. I graduated from college in Virginia with a Bachelor of Music Education degree as a voice major, and minored in piano and violin. My teaching certificate was for vocal, instrumental and general music, grades K - 12, and I graduated Magna Cum Laude. Graduate school brought me to Indiana, where I earned a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance. Migrating up to the Chicago area from there, I taught at a private music school (voice and small ensembles, as well as many faculty performances) before staying at home to raise our children, and teaching voice lessons privately in my Studio. After 30 years of teaching, I'm still at it, and I still love it! I am a Permanent Professional member of Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA), Illinois State Music Teacher's ...
Singing of all kinds begins with healthy vocal technique. Learning the correct warming up and use of the voice and breath is essential for a career in singing with any longevity. I use a combination of classical (bel canto) and contemporary styles of singing to bring out the best in each student's voice. We will work on breathing, range, voice blending, resonation, flexibility, projection and articulation.
