Heather is graduate from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. An active member of GMU Opera, Heather participated in the program's performances of 'A Christmas Carol,' 'Amahl and the Night Visitors,' 'La Boheme,' and 'Suor Angelica;' as well as Carolina in the studio scenes of Cimarosa's 'Il matrimonio segreto.'

Heather made her solo debut at the Kennedy Center in April 2011 singing for the Karen Reedy Dance Company along with singing for the GMU Dance Company.

Heather has been studying voice for over 10 years emphasizing on pop and musical theatre style
s prior to her opera training. Having learned the natural way of singing, Heather incorporates vocal health into her lessons with the theory of "self-awareness" while singing. About Nicole

As a voice teacher and voice coach I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section le
ader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportunity to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington,DC area and has sang opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member and preparing for a recital and auditions in October. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

My lesson environment is laid back and stress-free. I like my students to feel inspired and encouraged as they begin, and/or continue, their music education. For beginners, we'll be exploring the basics of either piano, or voice, while focusing on proper technique, basic theory, and a solid skill set. Within 3-6 months, my students are able to read music and understand the language of it.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

I've had several vocal teachers before but I can honestly say Valyncia is the best I've ever worked with. She's the sweetest, most caring person, and more than capable of pushing you to your next level even if you don't think you can do it. Voice type:
I am a true dramatic soprano. I sit between mezzo and soprano. Having a rare and large instrument has given me invaluable insight and a wider perspective on all other voice types.

I specialize in the intonation of the voice. Students learn specific vocal techniques and how to properly approach the voice in a natural and relaxed manner.

From doing such, students will be able to create appropriate colors for their instrument to then genuinely achieve different styles of music.

Exercises will also encourage range, breath support that maintains a relaxed and low larynx, placement, dynamics, proper resonance, breath direction, blending of registers and most importantly flexibility in order to sing with freedom and in your authentic voice.

The technique will never lose sight of the integrity and authenticity of the voice. It in fact enhances and supports this concept. Singers will learn how to hear their true voice in a way that they have yet to experience fully.

We will have very clear and relevant discussions on how the voice works. This is absolutely vital to finding true success in your studies. It should be noted that one cannot learn without comprehension first.

More importantly from our discussions, the voice will no longer feel like such a mystery.

My approach will help solidify things you continue to struggle with. I have had many, many students agree and come to this conclusion.

This especially includes students who have already studied voice seriously, but are struggling to grasp concepts and or technique.

More times than not, it is the instruction you have received that is inaccurate and ineffective for your voice.

For Piano I specialize in reading skills and establishing exceptional foundations in beginning pianist. I explain music from the very root and how concepts are related to one another through music theory.

General vocal styles I teach:
Jazz (any variation such as blues), popular adult contemporary (such as ballades, singer song-writer, R&B) musical theatre, classical, opera (bel canto and verismo) traditional, hymnal, sacred, country, and any variation of these styles.

Listed are the styles I coach. Students will find improvement in all styles across the board, even indirectly because it is not simply about singing exclusively in one style versus another. Instead we are learning to use the voice efficiently and effectively and this will translate into any singing genre.

What to expect during lessons:

My teachings are based on first the individual assessment of the student's structure and voice type, much like the true Italian style. Students will develop their technique through clearly directed vocal exercises and put this into practice through their musical rep.

Beyond this objective we will cover other artistic and technical aspects including interpretation, diction, phrasing, timing, and performance.

We will also discuss the mentality of singing. This unique approach that I have developed helps students learn their instrument immensely better than without it.

Voice lessons should be on a weekly basis to gain consistency and to maintain the student's time slot on the schedule.

Lessons are highly progressive and structured based on each student's individual learning needs.

I teach piano in the European (Russian) route.

I specialize in proper reading skills and developing good technique. Students learn to use strategies to sight read music on their own and develop interpretive skills.

I have developed a method of teaching that helps students systematically identify pitches and counting with accuracy.

Music theory is heavily emphasized during lessons and necessary to support the study of piano.

We will also work on interpretive skills based on historical context and artistic development. I teach students how to think about music critically and thus create dialogue with the music.

Piano lessons should be on a weekly basis to gain consistency and to maintain the student's time slot on the schedule.

My goal is to help students become increasingly independent as musicians. I have worked with many children with disabilities as well. Please ask me how.

We moved to Mt. Vernon area less than a year ago, and we needed a piano instructor for our three children who was affordable, but both my husband and I are from musical backgrounds, which makes finding a teacher a difficult process, as we aren't interested in taking just anyone who happens to have a degree in music. Christine is a rare find. She teaches in what I would describe as an immersion style that keeps the lessons steeped with concepts from theory to technique to artistry. She surrounds the children (mine ages 5, 9, and 11) with explanation, demonstration, analogy, and encourages them to learn at their own pace. "Do you understand?" is her gentle motto, probing for areas where the children need reinforcement. When they admit they aren't getting something, she will circle back to explanation from many different angles, illustrating a deeply empathetic reading of individual learning styles. My 5 year old began lessons 3 months ago and is already reading music. She listens to the children and asks thoughtful questions about their personalities. Christine is exacting in the best way an invested parent could hope for. Masterfully, she challenges the children to perfect themselves as she allows the time for such training and evolution to take place. I have been so pleased and excited over the children's experience, that I am seriously considering taking voice lessons with her, myself. I could not more highly recommend a piano instructor.

It was truly by chance that I found Christine after another instructor didn't work out, and I am so fortunate! Day one, I was impressed with her professionalism, passion for music, and patience with a first time adult piano student.

I've always wished I had played an instrument growing up; now that I'm stable, I decided to go for it! However, I was very nervous, considering I had no musical experience. Christine has been nothing short of encouraging. In addition, my 8 year old son is taking lessons with her. It is evident that she has a gift when it comes to teaching. She has constructed her teaching methods in a way that is suitable for all ages. Christine is undoubtedly an accomplished expert in both piano and voice (she taught my 7 year old daughter both) and has an unique ability to translate this expertise into "laymans" terms for even the youngest student. I watched my daughter grown during our time with Christine, in not only her musical abilities but also as a young lady -- taking responsibility to practice at home, wanting to do her best, and reading her lessons to make sure she was on track. Christine is pleasant and engaging, and yet has a gentle firmness when my daughter needed that extra nudge along the way.
