Heather C.

Springfield, VA

I've been teaching singing for almost 5 years and my students have gone on to win competitions and record CDs. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to breathe easier and as time goes on you'll be able to have a solid tone. I specialize in self-awareness, typically use Schirmer books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: keyboard. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Heather

Heather is graduate from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. An active member of GMU Opera, Heather participated in the program's performances of 'A Christmas Carol,' 'Amahl and the Night Visitors,' 'La Boheme,' and 'Suor Angelica;' as well as Carolina in the studio scenes of Cimarosa's 'Il matrimonio segreto.'

Heather made her solo debut at the Kennedy Center in April 2011 singing for the Karen Reedy Dance Company along with singing for the GMU Dance Company.

Heather has been studying voice for over 10 years emphasizing on pop and musical theatre style
s prior to her opera training. Having learned the natural way of singing, Heather incorporates vocal health into her lessons with the theory of "self-awareness" while singing. Each student will sing only what is comfortable for THEIR voice and will receive, as well as give, feedback on their singing.

Heather was the best instructor we could have had for our granddaughters Audition Prep for her High School Arts Program. My granddaughter was very comfortable working with her and learned so much from Heather. I would definitely recommend her for any type of voice lessons. She is very knowledgeable.
Thank You Heather for helping Calista!

If you're just seeking to improve your voice for church, for fun, a school musical, an audition or for the next X-Factor tryouts we can do that. We will see where are you currently, see what your goals are and I will try to help get you there. In general, I like to take everyone on an individual basis and see what it is that I can do for them.

About Nicole

As a voice teacher and voice coach I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section le
ader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportunity to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington,DC area and has sang opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member and preparing for a recital and auditions in October. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Inside my home studio I have: music, a music stand, chairs, WiFi, a computer, a laptop, a keyboard, a microphone, a metronome, a microphone, an amp/large speaker, and a sofa.

*** Specialties ***
For voice I would say that my focus is on classical voice. I also sing jazz, gospel and musical theater. For acting I have done both improvisational and regular scripted plays.

I have not taught students with special needs, but as someone with a twin sister with special needs, I am open to teaching students with special needs.

Valyncia V.

Fort Washington, MD

I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge.

I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony
a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a couple of bands (Rhythm and Blues, and Jazz). My undergraduate studies were completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. If you can hear the proper note, I can help your vocal instrument play to its fullest abilities.

I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I wa
s a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a few bands (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Rock). My undergraduate studies were completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, as well as various degrees of popular music.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio- entry room of home, baby grand piano, seating area, dry erase board, mirrors
Music Studio- one recording studio, seating area, classroom

*** Travel Equipment ***
If needed, I provide a portable piano keyboard, microphone with amplifier, paper handouts of lessons, etc. The student needs to have paper to take notes and a writing instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Most of my voice lesson experience has been with adults, and contemporary popular and inspirational music.

I've had several vocal teachers before but I can honestly say Valyncia is the best I've ever worked with. She's the sweetest, most caring person, and more than capable of pushing you to your next level even if you don't think you can do it. I didn't have or even know how to find my head voice before taking lessons with Valyncia. She has a knack for pulling talent out that you didn't even know existed. From vocal lessons, to songwriting, and recording she's a jack of all trades. I would highly recommend that you allow her the chance to share her gifts with you.

To start off sammy is an awesome teacher. I basically came to sammy with a singing skill of a 4 out of 10, and sammy helped me improve better than I really thought I would ever turn out to be. I had been wanting to be able to sing popular r&b songs, sammy pretty much trained my voice and brung out the inner soul and passion in me. He taught to just reach the preak of the songs and flow with it smoothly and also be strong with my projection of my voice. I used to feel a little shy when started singing with sammy because i wasnt sure if my voice was good enough, but i have very well built my confidence up with sammy's help to be able to song anywhere in any situation! Other people have rated my voice as a strong improvement from what it was before as well and people seem to fall in love with my voice! Thanks sammy!

Sammy is truly an excellent music instructor -- his professionalism, talent, and skill are truly top notch. He has an infectious enthusiasm that energizes you to be better and to reach your goals efficiently. I have a number of years of experience with singing already, so I asked him to be a little aggressive in my instruction at my first lesson. He took that request and ran with it, and so I've noticed an even bigger improvement than I thought possible after only a few lessons! I would definitely recommend Sammy for anyone interested in developing their singing skill and confidence in a big way.

Christine P.

Alexandria, VA

There are many dimensions that have to be attended to in order to sing properly.

My intent is to simplify the technical aspects of singing so that our attention is placed on expression.

We are communicators first as singers and it is important to not lose sight of this during our studies.

My services as a vocal coach are highly unique because I specialize in the intonation of the voice, so I am not limited to one style. I genuinely teach all legitimate vocal styles.

The technique is based on the individual's instrument through continuous careful assessment.

I accept vocal students starting at the age of 11 and up.

About Christine

Intro:
Christine is a professional vocal coach who has over 6 years of experience in helping beginning to expert level students develop the proper intonation and vocal technique within all legitimate styles of singing. She is considered an expert in her field.

She offers voice lessons that are based on the assessment of the student's individual structure and voice type. She received her music education in classical vocal performance from George Mason University.

She is also a highly sought out piano instructor for her ability to establish an exceptional foundation in beginning piano stu
dents.

Bio:
First and foremost thank you for taking the time to view my profile and I look forward to helping you work toward your musical aspirations.

Professional recording artist signed with label based in Nashville. Has two U.S. Billboards on the indicators chart (2014 summer/fall release) in the popular adult contemporary genre.

In addition to U.S. charts, she is also playing in the U.K. Most recently releasing her 2nd official single in the U.K. on June 1, 2016 titled "If that's love".

You may find her music on such music distribution sites as iTunes and Spotify. Samples are also available on Reverbnation.com.

Education:
Received music education from George Mason University in classical vocal performance.

I have continued my vocal studies with the incomparable Fabiana Bravo, who studied under the greatest Italian tenor of this past century, Luciano Pavarotti and the legendary Renata Scotto.

From Mrs. Bravo's teachings I have learned the authentic Italian tradition of Bel canto and Verismo in opera. This differs from the American interpretation of the art.

Voice type:
I am a true dramatic soprano. I sit between mezzo and soprano. Having a rare and large instrument has given me invaluable insight and a wider perspective on all other voice types due to it.

Specialization:
I specialize in the intonation of the voice. Students learn specific vocal techniques and how to properly approach the voice in a natural and relaxed manner.

From doing such, students will be able to create appropriate colors for their instrument to then genuinely achieve different styles of music.

Exercises will also encourage range, breath support, placement, efficiency, dynamics, proper resonance, breath direction, blending of registers and most importantly flexibility in order to sing with freedom.

The technique will never lose sight of the integrity and authenticity of the voice. It in fact enhances and supports this concept. Singers will learn how to hear their true voice in a way that they have yet to experience fully.

We will have very clear and relevant discussions on how the voice works. This is absolutely vital to finding true successful in your studies. It should be noted that one cannot learn without comprehension first.

More importantly from our discussions, the voice will no longer feel like such a mystery.

My approach will help solidify things you continue to struggle with. I have had many, many students agree and come to this conclusion.

This especially includes students who have already studied voice seriously, but are struggling to grasp concepts and or technique.

More times than not, it is the instruction you have received that is inaccurate and ineffective for your voice.

General vocal styles I teach:
Jazz (any variation such as blues), popular adult contemporary (pop), classical, opera, R&B, traditional pop, gospel, spiritual, hymnal, sacred, musical theater, big ballad, country and any variation of these styles.

What to expect during lessons:
My teachings are based on first the individual assessment of the student's structure and voice type, much like the true Italian style. Students will develop their technique through clearly directed vocal exercises and put this into practice through their musical rep.

Beyond this objective we will cover other artistic and technical aspects including interpretation, diction, phrasing, timing, and performance.

We will also discuss the mentality of singing. This unique approach that I have developed helps students learn their instrument immensely better than without it.

Piano:
I teach piano in the European route. I specialize in proper reading skills and developing good technique. Students learn to use strategies to sight read music on their own and develop interpretive skills.

I have developed a method of teaching that helps students systematically identify pitches and counting with accuracy.

Music theory is also heavily emphasized during lessons and necessary to support the study of piano.

We will also work on interpretive skills based on historical context and artistic development. I teach students how to think about music critically and thus create dialogue with the music.

Mission:
My goal is to help students become increasingly independent as musicians. I have worked with many children with disabilities as well. Please ask me how.

Who I am:
I love music, I love life, I love my family, I love my dogs, I love my coffee and I love to laugh a lot (I'm very Italian in that way). :D

Why take lessons now:
I always say to people considering voice lessons to just come as they are. Leave your worries at the door:) I understand that a person's voice is a very personally extension of who they are and it can be intimidating to sing in front of a professional.

I have taught hundreds of students and am well versed in seeing many different vocal issues.

I want to assure any potential students that the space I provide is professional, safe (background check three times, most recently 11/15) encouraging, friendly and welcoming.

Age and Advancement:
Please note: Voice begins at age 11 (the very youngest) and piano at age 5.

I teach beginner to expert level advancement in voice and beginner to late intermediate advancement in piano.

Availability:
I teach all of my students from my home in Alexandria.

I am available on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from noon until the evening. Please inquire about current availability.

How I developed my private studio:
I started my teaching career at Lorton music full time as a vocal and piano instructor and have over six years experience.

At Lorton Music I was so highly recommended by my clients to potential students that a wait-list became necessary to work with me.

My success in teaching has allowed me to open up my own private studio from home, which has been such a blessing:)

Who makes up my clientele:
I have a diverse range of students in terms of age, background, experience and interest for their musically aspirations.

Reasons range from personal to professional gain. Some of my students study voice to improve individually and others study on a more professional level such as getting into a music program for voice or preparing for auditions.

I will note that I am seeking students, especially voice students who view taking lessons on a consist basis as both valuable and necessary. To treat vocal lessons otherwise, will not allow for the full benefits to occur.

*Rates are not discounted. Rates are exceptionally priced based on instructor's ability. Thank you.

Christine is undoubtedly an accomplished expert in both piano and voice (she taught my 7 year old daughter both) and has an unique ability to translate this expertise into "laymans" terms for even the youngest student. I watched my daughter grown during our time with Christine, in not only her musical abilities but also as a young lady -- taking responsibility to practice at home, wanting to do her best, and reading her lessons to make sure she was on track. Christine is pleasant and engaging, and yet has a gentle firmness when my daughter needed that extra nudge along the way. I could not give her a higher review, for any student, at any age ... with Christine as your teacher you will learn, grown and achieve your goals. (I say "was." as we moved across the country, otherwise we would have been with Christine until my daughter went to college ... my daughter, and I, think the world of her!)
