Nicole C.

Waldorf, MD

If you're just seeking to improve your voice for church, for fun, a school musical, an audition or for the next X-Factor tryouts we can do that. We will see where are you currently, see what your goals are and I will try to help get you there. In general, I like to take everyone on an individual basis and see what it is that I can do for them.

About Nicole

As a voice teacher and voice coach I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section le
ader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportunity to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington,DC area and has sang opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member and preparing for a recital and auditions in October. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Inside my home studio I have: music, a music stand, chairs, WiFi, a computer, a laptop, a keyboard, a microphone, a metronome, a microphone, an amp/large speaker, and a sofa.

*** Specialties ***
For voice I would say that my focus is on classical voice. I also sing jazz, gospel and musical theater. For acting I have done both improvisational and regular scripted plays.

I have not taught students with special needs, but as someone with a twin sister with special needs, I am open to teaching students with special needs.

Timothy H.

Washington, DC

We specialize in teaching voice with concentrations in proper technique, proper breath control, placement, musicality and knowledge of repertoire in various genres.

About Timothy

I hold a Bachelors of Fine Arts from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. With over 15 years of experience, in both piano and voice, I've had to opportunity to perform, both domestically and internationally, with such great acts as Peter Nero and The Philly Pops, The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and many others. I served as lead singer, pianist, and co-songwriter for a number of independent bands covering numerous genres including, but not limited to, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Acoustic, and A Capella.

Since moving to Washington DC, I've immersed myself within the local music communit
y playing a handful of group and solo acts. I currently maintain a home music studio well equipped with musical instruments and music technology. I'm constantly practicing, writing, and recording to improve myself as an artist.

My teaching style is unique and individualized to each student. I set personalized goals to make every lesson a success, and I push my students to get the most out of themselves just like I do myself. I'm always enthusiastic and humor driven to create a personable learning environment for students of any age. Music is my life, and I'm so thrilled to have the opportunity to share my greatest passion with the hope that my students, too, will fall in love with music!

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson environment is laid back and stress-free. I like my students to feel inspired and encouraged as they begin, and/or continue, their music education. I introduce fun and innovative ways to build students' musicianship and creativity while retaining classic methods to develop strong technique and proper performance and practice habits.

For beginners, we'll be exploring the basics of either piano, or voice, while focusing on proper technique, basic theory, and a solid skill set. Within 3-6 months, my students are able to read music and understand the language of it.

For intermediate-advanced, we'll focus on building musicianship and skill sets by furthering studies in music theory, varying styles of repertoire, proper techniques that will greatly improve your piano and/or voice abilities, songwriting, improvisation, and live performance skills. We can also cover the basics of recording so you not only have tangible evidence of your improvement over time, but the know-how to create your own music!

I ask that my students come prepared to every lesson with the motivation and commitment to learn something new each week! Lessons are a fun and creative way to discover yourself as an artist and a person, so let's get started!!

I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge.

I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge.

I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony

a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a couple of bands (Rhythm and Blues, and Jazz). My undergraduate studies were completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock and Classical.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio- entry room of home, baby grand piano, seating area, dry erase board, mirrors
Music Studio- one recording studio, seating area, classroom

*** Travel Equipment ***
If needed, I provide a portable piano keyboard, microphone with amplifier, paper handouts of lessons, etc. The student needs to have paper to take notes and a writing instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Most of my voice lesson experience has been with adults, and contemporary popular and inspirational music.

I sang most of my life and never knew that I had the weaknesses that I did and I am so grateful that I chose Valencia to be my singing instructor! She is very informative and has taught me to think about singing in a way I never have. I am learning now that my voice is an instrument and with her help my voice and range will go on another level! She is also very flexible! Couldn't ask for a better instructor!

Valencia suits my learning style!

I must say that I need to understand what I'm trying to do and Valencia really gave me insight into musical theory and technical singing. Learning about diaphrafm breathing and seeing your voice as an "instrument" has opened me up to a new world of breathing in general as it relates to relaxation, yoga, meditation and yes even exercise!

She helped me determine my vocal range #I'm a tenor!# and she gives solid feedback for what you need to practice before your next lesson.

Definitely value for money!

I am currently on a Parental Leave of Absence from my position as Director of Choral Activities at Patuxent High School in Lusby, MD where I conducted 4 choirs, taught Guitar and AP Theory, directed the Glee Club, and served as Musical Director for the school's Spring Musical Productions.

American writer Joseph Campbell said, ”The job of an educator is to teach students to see the vitality in themselves. ” I believe that my role as your teacher and adviser is to help you find your voi
ce and connect to your instrument. Music is a universal language that takes our human experience to a higher level and I hope I can help!

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be enjoyable, so my number one goal is to bring joy to you, the performer, and to your potential audiences. I encourage you to communicate with me about your musical preferences and goals in your role as a music student.

My lessons follow a format each week. We begin with warm ups and technique building, followed by an in depth look at grade appropriate music selections that appeal to you, the student. Through practice, you will be given the tools necessary to reach mastery on each selection with dedicated practice.

In a vocal setting, warm ups consist of breathing exercises and vocalises. I teach in depth classical technique and explore the physiological aspect of vocal production and how it relates to classical music as well as to jazz and pop genres. We will work on vowel shape, vocal placement, and breath connection that will give you the tools you need to be successful in a variety of vocal genres.

Skill building assignments will be assigned weekly to help you form good practice habits that will set you on a pass towards success!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons will be held in my home where we have a digital piano available. Quiet neighborhood, available parking, one dog.

*** Specialties ***
I am currently on a Parental leave of absence from Calvert County Public Schools where I worked full time as a choral director and specialize in choral performance. My Chamber Choir girls qualified for the Maryland State Choral Festival in the Spring of 2012.

Even though I have only been working with Sammy Huh for a short time, I already know that he is one of the best instructors I have had in any discipline. Not only does he have years of experience in many different kinds of vocal music, but also he really knows how to guide a student through the process of learning a new technique, song, or vocal exercise. By the end of our first lesson together I was able to comfortably reach notes I normally had a difficult time with and by our second lesson I was able to hit notes that I had rarely, if ever, sung before. Furthermore, Sammy is a very passionate, encouraging, and caring teacher, and that contributes so much to the progress you can make while learning from him. He is excited to help you with any aspect of your voice and any type of music you want to sing, and has plenty of suggestions if you are unsure, as I was. Overall, Sammy is an amazing teacher and I feel so lucky that I have had the chance to take lessons from him!

Sammy is an outstanding teacher. He is incredibly passionate and dedicated to his students and their growth. His pedagogical knowledge and investment in their vocal and musical progress makes him a mentor that knows how to produce tangible results. He is fun, inspirational, but relentless in his pursuit to produce sounds that I thought I would never be capable of. Trust your voice with him and you will be surprised with the vocal and musical growth from his teaching.
