About Joshua

As an actor, Joshua graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Judith Blazer’s 2005/2007 company of the Artist’s Crossing.
Performance credits include roles in The Trojan Women, Godspell, Burn This, Comedy of Errors, Children of Eden, Othello, Show Boat, Sunday in the Park with George, The Chosen, Sweeney Todd..., The Laramie Project, and Les Miserables to name a few.
As a director, Joshua directed three sold out productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in NC and DC, received rave reviews for his work with Neil
LaBute’s Some Girl(s), and just completed production for a series on the making of Oklahoma!. Other sporadic credits include Duets for the DC Fringe Festival, a number of independent films and countless readings, workshops and concerts.
Joshua has worked as a Musical Director for many shows within the NY/NJ/DC tri-state area and coaches a handful of select students. The musical play, Definition of a Housewife, conceived and written by himself and Jeffery Self had a workshop production in the summer of 2006 at Columbia University.
Most recently he appeared in Arena Stage’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, directed the DC premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s In Love and Warcraft and will next be appearing in Signature Theatre’s production of Soon by Nick Blaemire. He is also attached to a new musical (A House of Glass) about Tennessee Williams in which Joshua will be playing the prolific writer.
Joshua is the Artistic Director of No Rules Theatre Company based out of Washington, DC and Winston-Salem, NC and sits on the board of the Artists Crossing in NY, NY.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that all singing comes from the same place, technically (Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, etc.). I work more on building a strong foundation from which everything else comes. That includes breath, placement and the stripping away of bad vocal habits that inhibit us from making healthy productive sounds. A strong foundation does usually mean having a stronger sense of your "legit" voice because it takes more work to involve your palate and breath which makes Musical Theatre/Pop seem like a piece of cake. I like to work with dedicated students who are open to challenging themselves and exploring other schools of thought in order to take themselves to the next level.

With my actors, I start from building a foundation of a sense of truth which is inherent in all of us. We talk through/explore a number of "approaches", in order to find the individuals process. From there, we begin work on how to approach text (actions, objectives, targets, meanings, etc.)

**Prospective students should be aware that lessons for speaking voice are geared more toward theatre training, rather than speech therapy. **

*** Specialties ***
I only work on a flex schedule with my students, so when booking lessons- rather than selecting a specific day and time for lessons, we schedule each lesson from week to week as we go. I have lots of open hours for teaching, though they are not reflected on my calendar, as my schedule tends to fluctuate.

I have a strong background in musical theatre but believe that it all comes from the same place. Good technique is good technique which stems from more of a "classical" background. Bel canto, if you will. It's like dancing. Dancers who study ballet are much better dancers than those who don't because they have a strong foundation from which to work.

About Nicole

As a voice teacher and voice coach I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section le
ader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportunity to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington,DC area and has sang opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member and preparing for a recital and auditions in October. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

Inside my home studio I have: music, a music stand, chairs, WiFi, a computer, a laptop, a keyboard, a microphone, a metronome, a microphone, an amp/large speaker, and a sofa.

For voice I would say that my focus is on classical voice. I also sing jazz, gospel and musical theater. For acting I have done both improvisational and regular scripted plays.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock and Classical.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

The absolute best

I sang most of my life and never knew that I had the weaknesses that I did and I am so grateful that I chose Valencia to be my singing instructor! She is very informative and has taught me to think about singing in a way I never have. I am learning now that my voice is an instrument and with her help my voice and range will go on another level! Valencia suits my learning style!

I must say that I need to understand what I'm trying to do and Valencia really gave me insight into musical theory and technical singing. Learning about diaphrafm breathing and seeing your voice as an "instrument" has opened me up to a new world of breathing in general as it relates to relaxation, yoga, meditation and yes even exercise!

She helped me determine my vocal range #I'm a tenor!# and she gives solid feedback for what you need to practice before your next lesson.

Music should be enjoyable, so my number one goal is to bring joy to you, the performer, and to your potential audiences. I encourage you to communicate with me about your musical preferences and goals in your role as a music student.

My lessons follow a format each week. We begin with warm ups and technique building, followed by an in depth look at grade appropriate music selections that appeal to you, the student. Through practice, you will be given the tools necessary to reach mastery on each selection with dedicated practice.

In a vocal setting, warm ups consist of breathing exercises and vocalises. I teach in depth classical technique and explore the physiological aspect of vocal production and how it relates to classical music as well as to jazz and pop genres. We will work on vowel shape, vocal placement, and breath connection that will give you the tools you need to be successful in a variety of vocal genres.

Even though I have only been working with Sammy Huh for a short time, I already know that he is one of the best instructors I have had in any discipline. Not only does he have years of experience in many different kinds of vocal music, but also he really knows how to guide a student through the process of learning a new technique, song, or vocal exercise. By the end of our first lesson together I was able to comfortably reach notes I normally had a difficult time with and by our second lesson I was able to hit notes that I had rarely, if ever, sung before. Furthermore, Sammy is a very passionate, encouraging, and caring teacher, and that contributes so much to the progress you can make while learning from him. He is excited to help you with any aspect of your voice and any type of music you want to sing, and has plenty of suggestions if you are unsure, as I was. Overall, Sammy is an amazing teacher and I feel so lucky that I have had the chance to take lessons from him!

Our daughter has had 2 lessons thus far with Sammy and already we can hear a difference in her vocals they are stronger and more controlled, her pitch is improved, breathing is better, and she has more confidence.

The fact that he covers so many genres and styles is refreshing.
