As a voice teacher and voice coach I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section le
ader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportunity to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington,DC area and has sang opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member and preparing for a recital and auditions in October. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

Inside my home studio I have: music, a music stand, chairs, WiFi, a computer, a laptop, a keyboard, a microphone, a metronome, a microphone, an amp/large speaker, and a sofa.

My lesson environment is laid back and stress-free. I like my students to feel inspired and encouraged as they begin, and/or continue, their music education. I introduce fun and innovative ways to build students' musicianship and creativity while retaining classic methods to develop strong technique and proper performance and practice habits.

For beginners, we'll be exploring the basics of either piano, or voice, while focusing on proper technique, basic theory, and a solid skill set. Within 3-6 months, my students are able to read music and understand the language of it.

For intermediate-advanced, we'll focus on building musicianship and skill sets by furthering studies in music theory, varying styles of repertoire, proper techniques that will greatly improve your piano and/or voice abilities, songwriting, improvisation, and live performance skills. We can also cover the basics of recording so you not only have tangible evidence of your improvement over time, but the know-how to create your own music!

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

I've had several vocal teachers before but I can honestly say Valyncia is the best I've ever worked with. She's the sweetest, most caring person, and more than capable of pushing you to your next level even if you don't think you can do it. I didn't have or even know how to find my head voice before taking lessons with Valyncia. She has a knack for pulling talent out that you didn't even know existed. From vocal lessons, to songwriting, and recording she's a jack of all trades. I would highly recommend that you allow her the chance to share her gifts with you.

I teach and practice a classically-based technique that crosses over into many genres and styles of singing. Lessons are meant to make each student a better all-around singer. Joshua began his teaching career as a graduate teaching assistant (TA) while pursuing his Master's degree at Florida State University. As a TA he taught voice lessons to undergraduate students, preparing them for auditions, recitals, and end of the term juries. Since graduating from FSU, Joshua has maintained a dynamic private vocal studio. Offering lessons to students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience, utilizing a very personal approach to each student, tailoring lessons to meet each individuals needs. inging, he begins from the ground up, addressing each aspect of singing, including the alignment of the body while singing, the inhale of the breath, the management of the breath while singing, and the physical action of singing.

Current and former students have done things such as: recording albums with their band; record solo albums; successfully audition for premier choirs; get booked as a solo entertainer; be cast as a lead in a musical; appear on national television; receive highest ratings on end-of-semester evaluations; and excel with their karaoke league!

Joshua is also an active performer. With a repertoire that spans opera, oratorio, song, and even straight-plays, Mr. B. is a versatile and intriguing artist. He has performed a variety of well-known operatic roles, such as Rodolfo, in Puccini’s La Boheme, Borsa in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Recently he appeared as the young tenor Tony Candolino, with Lyric Opera Virginia, in their production of Terrance McNally’s tony-winning play Masterclass. Other notable operatic roles are Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Ferrando in Cosi Fan Tutte, and Camille de Rossilon in The Merry Widow. Joshua also enjoys exploring more obscure, contemporary works as well, such as Adam in Soluri’s Adam and Eve, The Celebrant in Mark Adamo’s Avow, and The Englishman in Jacques Ibert's Angelique. Mr. B. has also had the great honor of performing several scenes as Lenny in Carlisle Floyd's Of Mice and Men (an opera based on the popular novel by John Steinbeck) at a benefit for the composer himself.

Joshua also enjoys an active career as a concert soloist, appearing in such works as The Messiah, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, and Haydn’s Harmoniemesse. Recently he has appeared as a soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, as well as Carl Orff’s pivotal Carmina Burana. Joshua also had the privilege of joining the Cathedral Choral Society as the tenor soloist in last year’s performance of Rachmaninov’s Vespers, for special guests, their Excellencies, the ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine. In May, Joshua will once again join the Cathedral Choral Society as the tenor soloist in their performances of Mozart’s Davide Penitente, and Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass.

Recently Joshua won second prize at The Partners for the Arts inaugural vocal competition. Joshua is also a past winner of the Hannah Beaulieu Vocal Competition, and 2013 finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Mid-Atlantic region.

In 2010 Mr. B. made his European debut singing the role of Tamino from Mozart's Die Zauberfl te at the Mittels chsisches Theater in Freiberg, Germany. He also stepped in on short notice to sing several performances of Erster Geharnischter when the house tenor became ill.

Joshua is an emerging artist of the American Wagner Project, and recently attended Dolora Zajick’s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices.

I just love working with Josh. He knows his stuff and at the same time is fun to work with. He knows technique and anatomy, so he's able to describe all the details of what your air, tongue, palate, etc. should be doing. I never knew how much was involved in singing!
Plus he's always striving to find new and innovative ways to teach. He is not just an excellent singer who assumes he can pass it on, he really cares about the best way to help you improve.
Another thing I really appreciate is that Josh holds you to high standard. He insists on quality, but that means when he says you got it right, you know you really nailed it! Through it all his vibrant and warm personality shines through.

I am a true dramatic soprano. I sit between mezzo and soprano. Having a rare and large instrument has given me invaluable insight and a wider perspective on all other voice types because of it.

I specialize in intonation and teach students how to apply specific vocal techniques to create different colors in their resonators. From this students will be able to achieve different styles of music while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of their instrument.

Some of the styles I offer are jazz, popular adult contemporary, classical, opera, R&B, traditional pop, gospel, spiritual, hymnal, musical theater, big ballad, country and any variation of these styles.

What to expect during lessons:

I base lessons on the assessment of the student's individual structure and voice type, much like the true Italian style. Students will develop their technique through very clear and specific vocal exercises. They will put this into practical use through their rep.

Beyond this objective we will cover other artistic and technical aspects including musically interpretation, diction, phrasing, timing, and performance.

We will also discuss the mentality of singing. This approach helps students learn their instrument immensely better than without it.

I also teach piano in the European route. I specialize in proper reading skills and developing good technique. I will show students how to uses strategies to sight read music on their own and develop interpretive skills.

I have developed a method of teaching that helps students systematically identify pitches and counting with accuracy.

My goal is to make them independent musicians. I have worked with many children with disabilities as well. Please ask me how.

Lastly, I love music, I love life, I love my family, I love my dogs, I love my coffee and I love to laugh a lot (I'm very Italian in that way).
