Nero C.

Philadelphia, PA

Read music, play by ear, improvise, finger style, with a pick, soloing, chord melody... The guitar is my life's passion, It would be my pleasure to share my knowledge with you. I am comfortable teaching all levels and styles of guitar.

About Nero

I have been teaching music for 20 years. I grew up on the 2nd floor of my father's music store in Central PA and have been around music my whole life. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of the Arts where I studied jazz guitar with Pat Martino, Jimmy Bruno, Steve Giordano, and Tom Giacabetti. I was one of the original teachers during the formative years at the Paul Green School of Rock Music where I later went on to be the Music Director of the Philadelphia and Downingtown Schools. During that time, I helped many students prepare and get accepted to music
schools, ran and developed music summer camps, and organized concerts where the students performed the music of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and many more of rock's finest band at every major venue in Philadelphia.

I have been active in the local music scene recording and playing sold-out shows at the Electric Factory, Union Transfer, TLA, Trocadero, Johnny Brenda's and World Café Live with such acts as Work Drugs, 722, Bebek, Franzschubert, Sensi Star, Clean Equations, The Black Lodge Ensemble, Dani Mari, Ashley Phillips, and The Smash Brothers. I have played jazz at the Kimmel Center, musical theater at the Walnut Street and Arden Theaters, reggae bass at the Jersey Shore, and rocked out at CBGB's and the Filmore. I have toured throughout the east coast and as far as Shanghai and Stockholm. I bring all this range of experience to each lesson.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very easy going and patient teacher. My objective is for a guitar, bass, uke, mandolin or banjo lesson to be both educational and fun. I do not adhere to a strict curriculum because I have found over the years that everyone learns differently. I cater my lessons to the individual goals and tastes of my students.

Whether it is a 7 year old successfully playing a D chord or teenager connecting the dots of music theory, the most satisfying experiences for me is when a student has that “ah hah” moment. I feel it is my job not only to channel creativity but also to help students develop discipline. A typical lesson will consist of learning new skills such as working on rhythm and developing a good ear but most importantly, we will do a large amount of playing.

My teaching studio is furnished with two practice amps, a small PA, and a music stand. I have several guitars both acoustic and electric, plus a bass, keyboards, and several percussion instruments around the house to play with. I really enjoy working with students to develop their own music and am equipped to record demos. I also have an extensive songbook and guitar tab library as a resource to learn songs from. I do have a cat, just to let you know, and my house very easy to get to via public transportation.

Luis G.

Ardmore, PA

I've taught 5 year olds through 50 year olds with great success. You're never too old or young to get something valuable out of an instrument and contemporary guitar really bridges generations like few other instruments. I cater guitar lessons to the individual learner. I can take a more technique based approach for serious students or we can just learn to play some songs you love if you don't have a serious interest but just want to have fun.

About Luis

I am father to 3 girls [Elaine, Grace and Emma] so I'm very comfortable with kids of all ages. I studied Music Performance with a concentration in Classical Guitar at Eastern University, where I met my wife Allison who currently teaches Voice and Piano with Take Lessons. I received an Honorable Discharge for 8 years in the US Army and work at The University of Pennsylvania in the School of Medicine, which I also attend. I teach lessons privately and through take lessons just for the love of it.

I'm very easy going and patient. I focus on technique and music reading skills rather than buildi
ng repertoire. I would rather a student that is confident in their ability to play a few songs to a high standard than an unsure student that can play many to a lower standard.

As far as my own musical interests, I love classical guitar and the folk/singer songwriter genre. Artists I listen to regularly include The Swell Season(Glen Hansard), Gregory Alan Isakov, Iron and Wine, The Milk Carton Kids, Simon and Garfunkel, M.Ward, Of Monsters & Men, Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, Ray LaMontagne, The Mountain Goats, Andrew Bird, Dawes, Neutral Milk Hotel, Woodpigeon. I'm just realizing that could go on for a long time... I stay up to speed on most contemporary artists for the sake of my students. I regularly teach songs current pop artists in the interest of maintaining student engagement.

My real passion is in Classical Guitar music. There are few things that give me more joy than playing classical guitar. I love any opportunity to share that with someone eager to learn.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to start by reviewing what has been learned in the previous lesson, making sure to address any concerns before teaching something new. To ensure the student is truly learning and maintaining what I teach during our lessons we will do some short musical exercises which apply to that week's lesson, as well as some musical repertoire that reinforces the new principles taught in that lesson. I feel that correct repetitive practice of these exercises and music will ensure happiness with your progression as a musician. I do my best to learn the musical interests of my students and to personalize each lesson/assignment so that they remain engaged and excited.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have small studio space connected to my family room with a Piano and my guitars/amps (and any other instruments my wife and I have collected over the years). Parents can sit in studio or relax in the family room during lessons. It's a nice quiet suburban area and I have off street parking just outside the door.

Warning: I have friendly cats! They will rub up against your leg and may even purr loudly! In the most extreme cases, they have even been known to fall asleep while snuggling in an unsuspecting parents lap.

I think you should really pick Luis G. because he is very good at explaining things to me. Another thing I really like about having him as a teacher is that some times I forget he's my teacher ; I feel like he's one of my friends. That's somethings that I think is great because you can be open and not feel weird around him at all. I think He is really good at what he does and thats teaching Guitar and making people have fun with it!

About Ryan

Born in raised on the south side of Chicago Illinois, I grew up listening to A LOT of great Chicago blues guitarists. Music study was a way for me to find structure, discipline, self worth and expression not confined to a 40+hr work life. Through that I grew as a person and

Michael C.

Philadelphia, PA

Using your favorite songs form any genre of music students become familiar with musical scales, arpeggios, chords, music notation and theory, rhythm and ear training.

About Michael

Michael C. was eleven years old when he began to play the electric bass guitar. He decided to get an electric bass because it was the one instrument needed to start a band among his friends. In addition to playing the electric bass, Michael enjoyed time practicing on the guitar and piano in high school. Transferring the knowledge and finger technique to the guitar came easy because of the similarities between guitar and the bass. And growing up with an upright piano in the house always lead to tinkering and eventually became a proficiency after college. In 1996 Michael enrolled at the the Phil
adelphia University of the Arts. He was awarded a presidential merit scholarship and a university grant based on his entrance audition. During his studies Michael was recruited for a student ensemble also know as Metagroove. During this time Michael had shared stages with guitarist John Scofield, Singer Ike Willis (Frank Zappa Band), Medeski Martin and Wood and The Disco Biscuits among countless others.

C. has completed a Master of Arts in music education as well as Bachelor of Music in bass performance. Michael is qualified to teach on bass, upright bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice and a rare instrument called steel pan (steel drum) among others. Michael performs as a freelance musician. He can be found performing regularly at private parties and events around the greater Philadelphia area. He has performed playing most styles and genres of music. Among these styles are Pop, R & B, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Calypso, Flamenco, Latin, Pop, Musical Theater and Rock & Roll.

C. is a trained professional and prefers to cater his lessons to the individual need of each student. He believes that each student is unique and will encounter challenges in their own manner. Michael likes to supplement his lessons using musical interests of the student. C. has been known to arrange popular pieces for recital performances for his students. Some of the pieces he has arranged for his students include Something in the Way She Moves (Beetles), Long distance Run Around (The Who), Iron Man (Black Sabbath), That' €™s What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction), Hall of Fame (The Script) among many more. Michael encourages his students to use the music they love to challenge their ability and cognitive processes. Michael has the experience and training required to inspire and motivate you to become successful not only in music but in your daily endeavors.

*** Lesson Details ***
Michael has over twelve years experience teaching music and chooses to cater his lessons to the goals of his clients. He does not follow a set curriculum because different students tend to have different goals and expectations.

About Adam

I have been passionate about music all of my life. I have been teaching guitar and piano for 9 years. I'm a doctoral student at Chestnut Hill College pursuing a degree in clinical psychology with plans to become a music therapist. I learned guitar and classical piano under 2 private teachers while pursuing my Psychology degree and music minor at Rutgers University in NJ.

Music was a way for me to find peace, structure, confidence, and an outlet for personal expression and creativity outside of my everyday life. I've grown as a person and a musician through music. I get excited when I see
my students learn enjoy playing something new. I love music more than anything else and that love is something I try to bring out in my students. Once there is love for music, everything grows naturally. I teach to help my students find those strengths in themselves to live a fulfilling life through their instrument.

Professional, responsible, and analytical. Adam is flexible and takes constructive criticism like a champ. As a music fan of local music, I hired him Adam after seeing one of his performances and he has never disappointed me. He is kind and accepting and an exceptional teacher - great listening skills, very compassionate, and completely non-judgmental. Adam kept me motivated through the challenges of a new beginner at guitar to get me to where I am today. He supported me to not be hard on myself and pushed me to grow. Adam has the unique set of interpersonal skills to excel in the music teacher field. I would recommend him to any student!
