About Ian

Ian's vast and diverse experience on the Northeast music scene has given him the background that rivals the best of many professional musicians working today. From band tours of the US, Canada, and Hong Kong and a handful of recordings under various acts, Ian remains busy in his home city of Philadelphia. Ian has performed with such acts as Jazz great Grover Washington Jr. to the Bucks County Symphony Orchestra.

Teaching Experience

Ian has taught private lessons in Bass both electric and acoustic, piano, and guitar for the last ten years in which he has also lent his talents to
the esteemed Paul Green School of Rock and Day Jams Summer Rock School. He has also been involved with a number of after-school programs in the Philadelphia area where he taught private music lessons, music theory, and rock ensemble.

Musical Education

Ian's musical training began with piano at 7, saxophone at 9, self-taught guitar at 11, and finally electric and acoustic bass in high school. He was awarded scholarships to Philadelphia's Settlement Music School and the Berklee College of Music. Finally settling in NYC, Ian completed his B.F.A. in Jazz and Contemporary Music at the New School School for Social Research in 2000. Ian has recently completed his PA Teacher Certification K-12 from Temple University 2011.

Why study music with Ian?

Quite simply Ian is a fun, creative, open-minded, and experienced teacher/musician who teaches a wide genre of music styles. He simply loves all music. Jazz, Classical, Funk/R&B, Rock, Metal, and Country are all within the expertise of Ian's vocabulary. Ian teaches with the same intensity and passion that he performs with. Ian truly cares about teaching each and every student the best way he knows.

*** Lesson Details ***
Ian's lessons are a combination of goals set by himself and the student. Whether you aspire to be the next rock god in 3 months or to just play casually with your friends at the next barbecue, Ian is there to understand your musical goals. Every student is different therefore Ian accommodates his style and methods to each the individual. Old-school rigidity are not what Ian is about. Rather, Ian dips from both the traditions of the past and new techniques of today.

Topics Covered

Technique, Song Performance, Harmony, Rhythm, and Music Theory are all important components covered in the lesson plan. Sight reading standard music notation is encouraged but not necessary. Rhythm notation is a mandatory skill every musician must know and is taught from the beginning. Song choices can be tailored to the students tastes however Ian seems fit. Ian has no problem teaching anything from the Jonas Brothers to Jimi Hendrix.

Improvisation, Groove, and Ear Training are areas of special interest and study which can also be taught to enhance a students studies.

Students skills and goals are assessed every few months to ensure student and teacher are on a clear and steady path. Everything from major and minor scales to song retention is logged down to provide a means of assessment.

Practice

As both a teacher and playing musician, Ian honestly believes that it
takes a combination of 20% talent and 80% sweat/hard work to be a successful and
competent musician. Therefore a set practice time length is agreed upon
between Ian and the student to which the student must stick to a practice schedule as
best as he or she can. Learning not just "what to practice" but "how to practice" is an important skill that is acquired through patience, hard work, and repetition. Ian can show you the skills it takes to master the "Art Of Practice".

Lesson times of 30 minutes and 45 minutes are recommended for beginning students.

Glenside, PA

Guitar is my main instrument. I teach all styles from blues, to rock, to shredding, to jazz to classical to flamenco. Learn how to pick like Johnny Cash or fly like Steve Vai.

About Benjamin

I grew up in Glenside moved to Pittsburgh for school and came back because I love it here...I've been playing for 17 years and have a smorgasbord of influences from Zeppelin to the Beatles to Phish to Radiohead to the dirty projectors to Jay Z to Kurt Rosenwinkel & John Scofield. I have been composing and working with original bands for some 11 years and play regularly in the city and up and down the east coast. I have also been teaching for the past 11 years all over the Philadelphia area. i teach from a method I derived myself from years of learning both in and out of school. I think teachin
g music is both aural as well as visual and encourage students to listen to music a lot. most of all i feel that music is fun and the students should enjoy learning so i incorporate their favorite artists and favorite songs into our studies. for serious students I love theory and love sharing what I've discovered over the years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a very laid back guy but I take my playing seriously. music is my life and there's nothing I enjoy sharing and expressing more. I learned to love playing guitar when I was 12 from the coolest guitar teacher ever. he had a vibe that i gravitated toward and encouraged me in just the right ways to get me believing in myself. I try to encourage my students the same way. music should be fun above all and sculpt my lessons to each students individual needs so that they are better equipped to succeed.

Ben was fabulous! He taught me music I wanted to play at a speed that fit for me and simplified harder songs for a beginner like me to still be able to play a song I loved! Great teacher and picks up on your strengths and weakness. I would highly recommended him as a teacher! He's also funny and would make lesson's enjoyable! He was friendly to my dog and birds as well :)

Michael W.

Philadelphia, PA

Let's study the guitar and discover all the fun that you can have when you learn to play your favorite riffs and songs. I also love to study theory to uncover what went into the making of the music. Need to brush up on your technique? let's get down to some great warm up exercises to strengthen your fingers as you build accuracy. I have a lot of experience with recording in the studio as well as playing live on stage. I can teach you about those things too! Into gear? I love effects pedals and experimenting with sounds as well.

About Michael

My name is Mike W. I'd love to be your guitar or bass teacher! I have been in a successful indie band for almost 10 years. Having made 4 studio albums on Tooth and Nail Records and extensively toured the U.S. and Europe headlining and playing concerts with bands like Weezer, Brand New, Coheed and Cambria, Thursday, Sparta, Dr. Dog, Manchester Orchestra, Say Anything and Blonde Redhead, I have developed my craft. Now, I would like to share what I've learned about playing the guitar and bass through teaching motivated students of all skill levels. Because I have composed recorded and performed m
usic for so long now, and have a bachelors degree in Secondary Education from Temple University, I have a lot to offer you as your teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
We can focus our time together working on accomplishing the goals that you set for yourself. If you'd prefer that I guide us through a curriculum of my choice, I am okay with that as well! You can expect a positive, fun and professional environment where we work at your pace.
What are your interests? Here are some examples of what some of my students have been working on: Expanding their understanding of playing chords, Improving their technique through finger exercises, Composing original songs through the study of theory, Learning how to play the guitar solo for the song "In Bloom" by Nirvana, Arranging a guitar part for the song "Going On" by Gnarls Barkley, Learning how to play with a live band, Using effects pedals and appreciating different guitar tones.
We also host a show at my house where you play 1 or 2 songs solo or with a professional back up band that I put together. These shows have been a great experience for everyone because they build confidence and allow you to share your music with a receptive and supportive audience.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio space in basement, large, finished space, band practice space, room for parents to wait

*** Travel Equipment ***
My own amp and guitar

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in theory as well as teaching students songs that they choose in a way that is appropriate to their skill level. I focus on finger exercises to develop technique and help them compose original pieces with a study of theory. Scales are important as well as different chord voicing and inversions. Standard forms for Rock/ Jazz and Funk are also studies. I am more of an alternative rock guitarist than jazz or classical.

Great teacher!

Michael is a great teacher and I would definitely recommend him to others who are interested in learning to play guitar or who want to increase their skills. Michael does a great job of tailoring the lessons to you, your needs, and your interests. He's very patient, gives feedback appropriately, and always points out what you're doing well. He's very encouraging. Michael is very knowledgeable and experienced. I thought I'd simply be learning to play chords on the guitar, but Michael has also taught me some music theory. He "breaks it down" to make sure I understand the concepts behind what I am doing. He's always happy to answer my questions and takes the time to explain stuff when necessary. He also writes everything down for me so I can easily practice on my own between lessons.

Music was a way for me to find structure, discipline, self worth and personal expression outside of the typical confines life provides. Through that I grew a

Ryan is the third guitar teacher I have tried and in my opinion the best. While the others I tried were either too unstructured or too technical, Ryan does an excellent job of teaching you the all the basics while tying in the more technical theory aspects in a manner that is both efficient and logical. The way he is able to break things down has helped me progress much faster compared to my other guitar teachers. He is also well versed in adapting yours lessons to the style of music you want to learn how to play and can teach you all the different nuances that will help your playing stand out. I highly recommend giving Ryan a shot to help your reach your guitar playing goals.

Songs from classic to modern rock, folk, indie, grunge, R&B, Soul, etc. including Foster the People, Nirvana, Lenny Kravitz, Bush, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Corinne Bailey Rae, Yuna, and many more

About Adam

I have been passionate about music all of my life. I grew up in Teaneck, NJ. As a kid, I listened to a lot of Elton John and The Beatles, and as a teenager my first albums by Sublime, Bob Marley, Nirvana, and No Doubt made me interested in Rock. When I was 13, I taught myself to play guitar on my brother's old Yamaha. I spent weeks practicing until I learned a few songs. Soon, I grew interested in Classical, and I taught myself to play piano. Over the years, through private lessons, listening closely to records, reading biographies, and studying music in school, I deepened my skills. More imp
ortantly, however, I deepened my passion for music and expanded my horizons. Since 2004, I have been writing and recording my music, which spans several genres.

Music was a way for me to find peace, structure, confidence, and an outlet for personal expression and creativity outside of my everyday life. I've grown as a person and a musician through music. I still get excited when I write a new song, give an intense performance, or see one of my students learn to play something new. I love music more than anything else and that love is something I try to bring out in my students. Once there is love for music, everything grows naturally. I teach to help my students find those strengths in themselves to live a fulfilling life through their instrument.

Adam did a great job teaching me the basics of the keyboard. I have no music background and have never been taught to play an instrument. I wanted to learn 1 song for my wedding. Adam learned the song and wrote the notes for me so I could easily learn them. He was flexible with scheduling and always remembered where we left off even if there were several months between lessons (due to my schedule). He was very patient even when I struggled. I would recommend Adam for keyboard/piano lessons.

I took guitar lessons from Adam when I was a sophomore in high school. I knew nothing about playing guitar but i did play piano for several years. After learning with Adam, I definitely feel confident telling people I know how to play the guitar.
He has lessons planned well ahead and he is a very organised person. The teaching materials that he gives out are constructive and applicable. Adam creates a really comfortable learning environment for beginners and I never felt stupid asking him questions. He also plans the classes according to my own needs, which makes classes so much more fun and lively. Most importantly, he is really good at giving advice on how to practice (eg: chords, timing, beat, etc.)
He is the type of person that you could totally chillax with. I highly recommend him, adults or kids!!

I describe myself as an "intermediate beginner" on the guitar -- that is, I know a handful of chords, have a decent sense of rhythm and can "fake it" pretty well. I went to Adam to help me learn how to play properly and get to the next level. He met my expectations and then some...

Adam was quick to size up my capabilities and he worked with me, at my pace and with my input, to help me improve, demonstrating techniques and offering advice that opened up many new possibilities for me.

He also provided access to some great training materials and websites that have been invaluable as I work to be a better musician. I especially appreciate his willingness to help me sharpen up and make more compelling several tunes I've written, adding mini-riffs and flourishes that enhance the songs in a big way.

Adam is talented, knowledgeable and easy to work with, and I recommend him highly.
