I teach music reading ,walking bass lines, classic rock, funk, and how to read chord charts.
I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.
*** Lesson Details *** I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompa
ny students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.
*** Travel Equipment *** They should have their own instrument and a music stand.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in jazz improvisation on piano and guitar. I also teach recreational guitar and piano for adults, including classical and blues styles. I coach bass players and drummers in playing stylistically correct grooves for jazz, rock and latin music.

I've been taking lessons from Mike for about 6 months now and his enthusiasm and supportive approach are invaluable. This is my 3rd time trying lessons and the first time I've continued past the first couple sessions. And the reason is Mike. He's extremely talented, but more importantly, he's a phenomenal teacher. He explains things simply, concisely, and effectively. I leave every lesson enthused and excited to go home and practice. I can't recommend him highly enough. Mike's the man!

Mike S will teach you how to allow yourself to learn a new instrument!
Mike really is incredible. The guitar looked so complicated and confusing before I met Mike. He really teaches you how to allow yourself to learn a new instrument. Within a month I was improvising over simple changes with my own ideas! And within 2 or 3 months, the amount of chord structures I had at my disposal was mind blowing. The speed at which I became comfortable with the instrument was amazing. I really believe that Mike's simple teaching style really was a key part in my ability to play and grow on a new instrument. Other than that, he is one of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet and play with. He gives so much of his time to his community by teaching anyone from child to infinity and even bringing them together to create bands to showcase every persons different talents. He is a beautiful human being and I do actively suggest him to anyone that tells me they want to learn either piano, guitar, or bass.

AMAZING music teacher!
I have been taking lessons with Mike since I was age 5, and am now age 25. Mike was the first person to make me feel passion and love for music. He helped me discover my talent by allowing and encouraging me to play by ear and was always incredibly supportive, patient, and kind. Lessons with Mike make me eager to practice the piano daily and I have ALWAYS looked forward to our next lesson together because of the fun and easy-going environment he creates. If it weren't for Mike, I would not continue to play the piano as often as I do as an adult. He goes above and beyond for his students and I would HIGHLY recommend him as a teacher. I know I will take lessons from him for as long as he's still teaching!
Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Jen T. was 13 years old when she picked up her first guitar, rescuing her mom’s dusty old acoustic from the family’s attic. Quickly developing a love for the instrument, Jen headed west to sharpen her craft at LA’s esteemed Musicians Institute, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in music performance. While studying at MI, Jen formed the folk-pop duo Jen & Abby with vocalist Abby Miller. With their quirky style and catchy tunes, the band soon gained a devoted following through gigs at many renowned LA venues, including The Key Club, House of Blues, an
d Hotel Café. Following the release of their 2008 debut album Cannot Rearrange, the band’s music was featured in multiple films and television commercials. Jen has been sought out by many other artists seeking her particular blend of expertise and performance savvy. She relishes the chance to put her skills to the test in a wide variety of musical genres. In addition to writing and performing, Jen keeps busy as a private instructor to dozens of aspiring guitarists. She also has done over 1000 online instructional videos totaling up to more than 40 million views for YouTube and Mahalo website. Her various Mahalo website "Learn Guitar" apps have over 300,000 downloads and has had an itunes #1 ibook on how to play guitar.

Best guitar teacher I have ever had
Jen is a fabulous guitar player that has an innate ability to teach with understanding and patience. If I am not understanding a certain exercise, she is able to break it down for me in multiple ways so I can better understand how to perform.
I tend to get nervous to share new songs I have written but Jen's down-to-earth personality has definitely helped me begin to break out of shell.
I highly recommend Jen as your next music teacher.

Awesome passionate personality with ton of knowledge
It has been a total joy being instructed by Jen. Jen's passion in playing the guitar is extremely radiant, so you know you're in good hands with a passionate instructor. Myself not being the fastest of learners, totally felt comfortable by Jen's style of teaching. She provided a very relaxed and confident atmosphere :)I came in with an idea of what I wanted from the guitar, and Jen provided structure and guidance from the ground-up. You will totally feel your money being used on a superb, passionate, and knowledgable instructor! :)
I attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and I have a BA in Music. I am a working pro musician, regularly playing all different kinds of gigs with different bands, as well as solo, and regular gigs on TV. I have taught music lessons, and guitar in particular, for 18 years. I play all styles, but my favorites are Rock, R&B, Country, Rockabilly, and Blues (I also enjoy playing jazz, classical, and other styles as well). My main instruments are guitar (electric and acoustic) and voice, but I play keyboards, bass, mandolin, and drums also.
*** Lesson Details *** I focus on a co
mprehensive approach, incorporating each student's natural abilities as well as musical interests - whether you want to learn how to play your favorite songs, learn all the skills to play with a band, or study music theory and advanced songwriting techniques, I can teach you! From playing as a hobby or to entertain friends and family to advanced college-level topics, we can cover whatever your specific goals are. Also, with student interest, I like to focus on music theory, and a deeper understanding of how songs/music work - in other words, rather than just teaching a student a song and being done with it, I like to focus on how and why the music works as it does, to enable students to put their own spin/style on it, play it in different keys, etc. I teach all skill levels, from brand-new beginners to advanced players.
Several of many possible topics of study include:
• Lead and rhythm styles and techniques -- both are essential to learn! • How to play solos and how to improvise • Styles and techniques of your favorite musicians/songwriters • Playing by ear and how to learn songs just by listening to them • Playing to accompany yourself or someone else singing • Developing parts and techniques to play with other musicians • Songwriting, and how to create riffs, hooks, and chord progressions • Reading chord charts • Music reading -- Optional, not at all essential to playing music, but a good skill to have
My teaching style is friendly and good-natured, I believe in positive encouragement and feedback, and don't believe in "guilt-tripping" or any other negativity toward students - playing music should be fun! I also love when students ask questions - I operate under the old saying that "there are no stupid questions!"
*** Studio Equipment *** Amplifier, music stand, computer with internet connection (for playback of songs from the internet or CDs)
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide blank manuscript/chord chart/tab paper. I expect the student to provide their own instrument (along with any related things such as amplifiers, guitar picks, strings, etc.) and to provide study books that we agree upon (if necessary). I am able to supply books if the student reimburses me at the time they receive them.
*** Specialties *** I tailor my teaching style to each student's aptitudes and interests. All music students learn differently, and it's my challenge as a music teacher to figure out what works best for each individual student to inspire them and to keep them excited and motivated about learning an instrument.

Highly recommended: Amazing teacher!
Mike is a patient, supportive and incredibly talented teacher. From music theory to practical application, he's got all the answers... And he makes learning fun!
I took guitar lessons more than ten years ago and found it frustrating and I was terribly uninspired. Recently I took my old guitar out of mothballs and was determined to make some progress on the dang thing. A good friend recommended Mike and I've been taking lessons for nine months with him.
What's great about Mike is that he customizes my lessons. I'm not learning out of a book (which, I could if wanted) but I'm learning the songs that I love and learning the theory behind the chords, too. Then he keeps building on what we just learned. I go home from my hour lessons and play for another two hours because I'm so inspired.
I can't recommend Mike highly enough. He's a gem of a music instructor in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles.
My name is Ray - I'm 26 years old, born in Queens NY. I studied classical music for many years as a youngster at Aaron Copeland School of Music college preparatory program. Here I was also introduced to Jazz, and around the same time began experimenting with synthesizers. I went on to study Electronic Production & Design at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and quickly became a very sought after studio musician and performer.
I've been successfully teaching many instruments and proficiency levels for over 12 years now. I can say with pride that it is my passion, and I antici
pate teaching being a very important part of the rest of my life.
I enjoy reading science, math, and philosophy, and in addition to teaching am currently working as a pop music producer.
*** Lesson Details *** I consider my music lessons unique because of 3 main reasons:
1. I have a very deep understanding of music, sound, and theory, considering it one of my native languages.
2. I have devoted considerable amounts of time and energy studying neuroscience, which has greatly improved my understanding of the learning process.
3. I have the patience to guide a student through the necessary steps it takes to learn at whatever pace is optimal, in order to maximize the efficiency of the learning process for the individual.
*** Travel Equipment *** Students must have their own instrument, and purchase their own materials upon my request. I can purchase them for you for full and immediate reimbursement.
*** Specialties *** Classical music is my training background, and what I believe to be the most cognitively fulfilling music. That said, I'm a big fan of pop music, and enjoy teaching students their favorite songs from the radio.
I have an extremely thorough understanding of music theory, and am happy to incorporate as much or as little of that as the student's interest dictates, nevertheless maintaining the minimal amount of theory necessary to fully enjoy learning music and the instrument.

My son and daughter both take from Ray and they love him!!! My daughter started with him after she had had 2 other teachers and she improved immediately. She loves going to Ray because he teaches her to play the songs that she likes. Now she plays so many songs for memory!! My son loves going to piano and is always excited to see Ray.

When I started taking lessons from Ray I was playing the electric guitar, although I had a classical guitar in my house I did not play it that often. I took my classical guitar once to class and then I started to learn how to play the classical guitar. I went from playing basic peaces of music to playing Minuet in G in a short time. From playing electric guitar about 3 or 4 years to playing classical music in about 1.5 to 2 years. Ray has helped me to increase my knowledge of music.
James Edward Tuppen, II (jimmynovacaine) is an experienced and accomplished musician that hails from around the world. Tuppen discovered his passion for music thirteen years ago after moving with his family to Singapore, South-East Asia where he experienced his first concert watching pop-punk groups Sum 41 and local band Pug Jelly.
It was at that moment that Tuppen decided on the path he would take throughout his life. Tuppen later joined the pop-punk trio from Pug Jelly on a new venture that was named Saw Loser. It was with Pug Jelly and Saw Loser that he gained experience in touring and
performing all over the eastern hemisphere in countries such as: Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia to name a few. Through the band's success Tuppen was able to play and work with renowned bands and artists like Fall Out Boy, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, as well as, many more through large-scale, international festivals known as Sing Fest (Singapore), Pattaya International Music Festival (Thailand), Good Vibrations Festival (Singapore/Australia), Pop Carnival (Japan), and Soundrenaline (Indonesia).
Upon Saw Loser's independent success, Tuppen and the band landed record deals through major record label: Universal Music and independent record label: In and Out records (Japan). The band quickly gained traction in the media with newspapers all over the eastern hemisphere with Singaporean zines: Lime Magazine and Teenage Magazine, Japanese rock zine: INROCK, and television channels: MTv Asia, and RAGE TV (Australia).
In the midst of the band's momentum, Tuppen gained world-class endorsements with companies like ESP Guitars and Sennheiser. Both companies grew Saw Loser and Tuppen's popularity through rapid marketing on public transportation and artist profiles on their international websites, as well as through artist clinics with ESP endorsed artist Kiko Loureiro in Singapore.
During the bands preproduction phase of their sophomore album to be recorded in Ft. Collins, Colorado at the Blasting Room Studios with Bill Stevenson (Black Flag, The Descendents, and The Lemonheads), Saw Loser went on hiatus. All plans for travels to the United States to play at the world famous Whisky A Go Go, along with other venues on the way to record in Colorado, were cancelled. Saw Loser would never play in North America, but Tuppen would.
During his own personal three year hiatus from performance, Tuppen moved back to Texas and enrolled in Berkleemusic (Berklee College of Music online school) to gain master certification in Theory, Harmony, and Ear Training while simultaneously attending the Steinway Music School at Midland College to earn his degree in performing arts. Towards the end of his final semester, Tuppen met a former drummer of Here Lies the Hero that would introduce Tuppen to his new band mates and partners in an excIting career.
With Here Lies the Hero, Tuppen has so far performed with the likes of From First to Last, Dayshell, We Came As Romans, He is Legend, Of Mice & Men, August Burns Red, Trivium, A Lot Like Birds, Norma Jean, For the Fallen Dreams, Jamie's Elsewhere, Divided By Friday, Greeley Estates, Letlive, Secrets, and many more. The bands epic performances with Tuppen secured him with his long desired endorsement with favored guitar company, Ernie Ball Music Man and cable company, Intex Cables. As the band rapidly grew, Tuppen moved the project to the heart of the music industry in Los Angeles, California - perhaps where he was destined to be all along - where he resides today instructing up and coming artists, producing refreshing new projects, and performing around the country.

I would recommend him without a doubt.

Andrew went above and beyond what I ever expected. He did a great job of covering rudiments and technical aspects, while simultaneously
focusing on the "art" of bass playing. He was very aware of my skill level and responsive to my needs as a student. I highly recommend him for beginners and imagine that he would be great for more skilled students as well"

Alex is an awesome teacher! His ability to communicate information in a way that is easily understood no matter the complexity is a ra
re thing. Alex is obviously extremely passionate about teaching and music. Alex goes above the expected level of effort from a teacher, making sure every lesson has new and interesting material to be covered, as well as staying in contact as needed outside of lessons to answer any questions that may arise while practicing. If you are looking for someone who is dedicated to your learning process, as well as doing everything they can to keep material interesting and fun, I would suggest Alex."
