Gregory Valens Luv is a phenomenal vocal coach. He's very detailed in teaching you structure of the body to relax you and open you up for singing. I love his technique. I find myself very relaxed and limber which brings out the best in me. He's very creative and shares various types of vocalizations to help you with every style of music. He's also got a sweet spirit and that makes it very enjoyable to come to class.

Mike S.

Sherman Oaks, CA

I teach music reading ,walking bass lines, classic rock, funk, and how to read chord charts.

About Mike

I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompa
ny students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.

*** Travel Equipment ***
They should have their own instrument and a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz improvisation on piano and guitar.
I also teach recreational guitar and piano for adults, including classical and blues styles.
I coach bass players and drummers in playing stylistically correct grooves for jazz, rock and latin music.

I developed a desire later in life to learn how to play jazz and blues piano. I was very fortunate to start learning from Mike. He started me out with basic blues and over time I progressed into many of the jazz standards. Because he is also an accomplished guitar player, at all his lessons, he would accompany me while I played the new piece of music I was learning. He also does this if you are learning the guitar. This was very helpful in giving me a more complete musical experience, as I also learned to hear and play with other musicians. He is an extremely patient and upbeat instructor, constantly giving me positive reinforcement. I would get a new tune to practice as I became more proficient with the previous one. Each new tune became progressively more challenging. Having taken lessons from Mike for many years, I also witnessed his teaching and developing of younger kids. He really works with them in a positive way giving them as much time as they need to turn the corner on each tune and progress forward. They seem to enjoy it and he has developed some great musicians. As part of his instruction, he gives all his students an opportunity to participate in a Jazz Band he puts together. In this Jazz Band he leads all the players in working together though a jam session. Other players may include guitarists, brass players and keyboardists, young and older. Frankly I am forever grateful to Mike for helping me create the foundation to play jazz and blues piano both alone and with a group of other musicians.

Moa H.

Los Angeles, CA

I believe it is important to have fun when learning a new instrument. Because, why do it if you don't enjoy it?
Therefore, I tailor all lessons per student to make sure you get the most out of your lessons. We can work on anything from learning new songs, to different techniques and theory or even performance.

About Moa

Seeing individuals improve their skill set and confidence through music is why teaching is one of my passions!

My name is Moa and I am a singer, guitarist and bassist. I am a Swedish native who decided to pursue my music career and moved to LA 4 years ago.

Since relocating to Hollywood, I have earned an AA degree in voice and independent artistry from Musicians Institute and travelled the world playing cruise ships, US air force bases, high schools and clubs all over the US, and especially SoCal with several bands. My main focus and "baby" is my band, Dead Heroine, where I am the lead
singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist. We earned a slot at Warped Tour '15 and are currently writing new material for our sophomore EP while playing actively at high schools and clubs in the LA/OC area.

With over 7 years of professional teaching experience I am looking forward to work with you and help you in any way I can on your musical journey, wether it's improving your range, technique, confidence or you-name-it!

Just had my first lesson with Moa and it was a fantastic start. Moa has a great
ear, she can hear where I needed work and where I'm good at my voice. I'm excited that I can take what I learn and practice simply on my own. I'm looking forward till our next lessons where my voice will keep getting strong, all thanks to Moa!

Brian N.

Van Nuys, CA

We'll work to find the music that inspires you and work on forming a solid technical foundation along the way.

I encourage students to learn to read simple musical notation and basic music theory, but everyone's individual goals are accommodated, as well.

About Brian

I've been making my living playing all kinds of music for over ten years. I feel that working on and creating music night in and night out with bands and artists from rock to hip-hop, pop to jazz, folk and country to disco has given me unique insights into what makes a good bassist. There's a balance to be struck between theory and instinct, as well as technique and emotion.

I tailor each lesson to each student, creating most of my own lesson materials. These can range from pages of scales and arpeggios, to full transcriptions and even audio recordings of practice tracks. I like technol
ogy and feel it can be a valuable part of the learning experience. But generally, I teach by having students learn songs and basslines, then illustrate musical ideas and principles by pulling directly from the music we've just been working on.

The most important aspect of my approach, however, is to find what brings out students' passion for music. I've been fortunate enough to have studied with some amazing players who's love for music and their instrument inspired (and continues to inspire) me. If I can find that, you will practically teach yourself.

*** Lesson Details ***
Sample Lesson Plan for a beginning/intermediate electric bass student. (With beginning upright bass students, I tend to focus a little more on the technical aspects of the instrument at first.)

I. Technical
Simple technical exercises aimed at developing good technique and physical comfort with the bass

II. Practical
We'll look at Songs/Basslines (usually of the student's choosing) and learn how to play them, pulling out salient points relevant to bass instruction and music in general.
For intermediate/advanced students we'll incorporate Music Theory as we work through songs.
This is also where I'd introduce reading music notation if that is something the student wishes to learn.

III. Theoretical
Work on scales that we've encountered in the song or bassline we've been working on and relate them to making music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home recording studio setup for recording lessons as well as making practice tracks.

Amazing Slow Downer (for the record, this is the best $50 investment you can make in your musical education.)

Practice bass and guitar amplifiers.

Drum kit

Ability to quickly create sheet music and tablature with Finale and Power Tab.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Two Channel Practice Amp

iPad with good quality mic for recording lessons and playing audio lesson material.

*** Specialties ***
Electric Bass Styles- Rock, Country, Retro styles of R&B and Top 40
Upright Bass Styles- Classic Jazz and Gypsy Jazz, Bluegrass, Jump Blues

Establishing solid fundamentals.

Ear training and transcriptions.

Being new to the upright bass and playing music in general, I needed an instructor who is patient and able to simplify the material. Brian did both! He is an amazing teacher that is very patient and has a teaching style that makes learning easy and stright forward.

Easy going guy, totally prepared for lesson when I arrived. Had printouts and a folder for me ready to take home for practicing. He was understanding of my changing schedule and happy to move our lesson around to accommodate.

Super encouraging, I would recommend him to anyone just starting to learn an instrument or maybe having trouble getting past a technique issue. Gave me gentle reminders to correct technique issues early, which is invaluable. Unfortunately, due to a job change, I can't take lessons anymore, but when I come back I will be taking them from Brian again.
