Beckie E.

North Hollywood, CA

With all music majors, we have to be prolific in our theory. I teach a basis of theory to all students. I like to work on theory and ear training at the same time as they both go hand in hand.

About Beckie

Hi! My name is Beckie and I have played music for all of my life. I play many different instruments such as the Trumpet, French horn and Piano. I graduated from Chapman University in 2010 with 2 degrees in music, Music Education and Music Performance on French horn. I also taught elementary school for 3 years and was a brass coach for a Montessori Academy. I have taught privately for 10 years now and love the one-on-one attention that I can give the students. I currently work for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, I perform with two different orchestras and am in a Brass Ensemble called the Vine St
reet Brass that performs for events around the city.

I look forward to working with your or your child in helping to start or continue a musical instrument!

*** Lesson Details ***
When I teach lessons, I like to go at the pace of the student. I am very patient but I expect the student to practice during the week. I will always work with a student as long as it takes to have them understand what is difficult for them musically. I use a lot of different books like Teaching little fingers to Play and Standard of Excellence. For Adults, I like the Big Beginners Piano book which has easy classical pieces to play! I teach from the rudimentary skills and build on the fundamentals of music. After 3 or 6 months, my students feel accomplished with what they have learned and excited for the next 3 to 6 months!

*** Studio Equipment ***
practice space in home w/ seating for parents and music stand. I also have a cat and a dog, so if you are allergic, please let me know! The cat and dog are always put away during the lesson time.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have one music stand. I expect the student to provide the music books and their own instruments.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical genres of playing.

Beckie did a great job with my Granddaughter on the Piano! Maddy loved her piano lessons with Beckie. My grandson also took Trumpet lessons with Beckie. Although she did not have an actual trumpet to bring to the lessons Beckie did a terrific job showing Jacob the music he wanted to learn and some trumpet playing concepts.

My 11 year old has been taking lessons with Beckie for about a month and I couldn't be happier. The first time we met Beckie we immediately discovered she is a very friendly and welcoming instructor. I noticed that my son was immediately at ease with her and all apprehension about meeting a new teacher left him. Driving home after that first lesson he commented on how much he liked Beckie. Beckie does a great job of explaining the theory part of the lessons and I'm excited to see my son's ability grow. My only regret is not having met her sooner.

My daughter has taken lessons with Jon while she is in LA. Jon is super patient and an extremely talented teacher/singer. Jessie was a strictly Broadway type singer, and Jon helped her learn how to sing different styles, especially pop.

Great Teacher

I scheduled something for my daughter with Jon. He is very accomodating because my daughter had a musical theater solo and needed some help to strengthen her vocal range. In one hour, Jon did wonderful and helped to improve the performance drastically.

Best guitar teacher I have ever had

Jen is a fabulous guitar player that has an innate ability to teach with understanding and patience. If I am not understanding a certain exercise, she is able to break it down for me in multiple ways so I can better understand how to perform.
I tend to get nervous to share new songs I have written but Jen's down-to-earth personality has definitely helped me begin to break out of shell.
I highly recommend Jen as your next music teacher.

Awesome passionate personality with ton of knowledge

It has been a total joy being instructed by Jen. Jen's passion in playing the guitar is extremely radiant, so you know you're in good hands with a passionate instructor. Myself not being the fastest of learners, totally felt comfortable by Jen's style of teaching. She provided a very relaxed and confident atmosphere :)I came in with an idea of what I wanted from the guitar, and Jen provided structure and guidance from the ground-up. You will totally feel your money being used on a superb, passionate, and knowledgable instructor! :)

Music Theory

About Mike

I attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and I have a BA in Music. I am a working pro musician, regularly playing all different kinds of gigs with different bands, as well as solo, and regular gigs on TV. I have taught music lessons, and guitar in particular, for 18 years. I play all styles, but my favorites are Rock, R&B, Country, Rockabilly, and Blues (I also enjoy playing jazz, classical, and other styles as well). My main instruments are guitar (electric and acoustic) and voice, but I play keyboards, bass, mandolin, and drums also.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on a co
mprehensive approach, incorporating each student's natural abilities as well as musical interests - whether you want to learn how to play your favorite songs, learn all the skills to play with a band, or study music theory and advanced songwriting techniques, I can teach you! From playing as a hobby or to entertain friends and family to advanced college-level topics, we can cover whatever your specific goals are. Also, with student interest, I like to focus on music theory, and a deeper understanding of how songs/music work - in other words, rather than just teaching a student a song and being done with it, I like to focus on how and why the music works as it does, to enable students to put their own spin/style on it, play it in different keys, etc. I teach all skill levels, from brand-new beginners to advanced players.

Several of many possible topics of study include:

• Lead and rhythm styles and techniques -- both are essential to learn!
• How to play solos and how to improvise
• Styles and techniques of your favorite musicians/songwriters
• Playing by ear and how to learn songs just by listening to them
• Playing to accompany yourself or someone else singing
• Developing parts and techniques to play with other musicians
• Songwriting, and how to create riffs, hooks, and chord progressions
• Reading chord charts
• Music reading -- Optional, not at all essential to playing music, but a good skill to have

My teaching style is friendly and good-natured, I believe in positive encouragement and feedback, and don't believe in "guilt-tripping" or any other negativity toward students - playing music should be fun! I also love when students ask questions - I operate under the old saying that "there are no stupid questions!"

*** Studio Equipment ***
Amplifier, music stand, computer with internet connection (for playback of songs from the internet or CDs)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide blank manuscript/chord chart/tab paper. I expect the student to provide their own instrument (along with any related things such as amplifiers, guitar picks, strings, etc.) and to provide study books that we agree upon (if necessary). I am able to supply books if the student reimburses me at the time they receive them.

*** Specialties ***
I tailor my teaching style to each student's aptitudes and interests. All music students learn differently, and it's my challenge as a music teacher to figure out what works best for each individual student to inspire them and to keep them excited and motivated about learning an instrument.

Highly recommended: Amazing teacher!

Mike is a patient, supportive and incredibly talented teacher. From music theory to practical application, he's got all the answers... And he makes learning fun!

I took guitar lessons more than ten years ago and found it frustrating and I was terribly uninspired. Recently I took my old guitar out of mothballs and was determined to make some progress on the dang thing. A good friend recommended Mike and I've been taking lessons for nine months with him.

What's great about Mike is that he customizes my lessons. I'm not learning out of a book (which, I could if wanted) but I'm learning the songs that I love and learning the theory behind the chords, too. Then he keeps building on what we just learned. I go home from my hour lessons and play for another two hours because I'm so inspired.

I can't recommend Mike highly enough. He's a gem of a music instructor in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles.

The guitar is the instrument with which I have developed bad habits and posture over the years, but in addition to correcting these things, I really needed help with music theory. Also, as opposed to being a kid with all the time in the world to practice and study, I'm a 40-something with a busy, full-time job in the middle of my daily life. De'Anza was flexible enough to work with these issues of mine while still keeping me focused on a positive, effective lesson plan. That is the mark of a professional. Thank you De'Anza!

De'Anza is truly a gifted multi-instrumentalist and vocal coach. Her down to earth approach and general vibe is incomparable. I would highly recommend taking lessons with her, she's very flexible to work with and will work to build a curriculum according to your needs. It's hard to find people in LA who have a good ear and listen to your needs. She's a great fit for someone who's looking for proper instruction.
