I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.
*** Lesson Details *** I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompa
ny students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.
*** Travel Equipment *** They should have their own instrument and a music stand.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in jazz improvisation on piano and guitar. I also teach recreational guitar and piano for adults, including classical and blues styles. I coach bass players and drummers in playing stylistically correct grooves for jazz, rock and latin music.

I developed a desire later in life to learn how to play jazz and blues piano. I was very fortunate to start learning from Mike. He started me out with basic blues and over time I progressed into many of the jazz standards. Because he is also an accomplished guitar player, at all his lessons, he would accompany me while I played the new piece of music I was learning. He also does this if you are learning the guitar. This was very helpful in giving me a more complete musical experience, as I also learned to hear and play with other musicians. He is an extremely patient and upbeat instructor, constantly giving me positive reinforcement. I would get a new tune to practice as I became more proficient with the previous one. Each new tune became progressively more challenging. Having taken lessons from Mike for many years, I also witnessed his teaching and developing of younger kids. He really works with them in a positive way giving them as much time as they need to turn the corner on each tune and progress forward. They seem to enjoy it and he has developed some great musicians. As part of his instruction, he gives all his students an opportunity to participate in a Jazz Band he puts together. In this Jazz Band he leads all the players in working together though a jam session. Other players may include guitarists, brass players and keyboardists, young and older. Frankly I am forever grateful to Mike for helping me create the foundation to play jazz and blues piano both alone and with a group of other musicians.
I offer recording service to all students which support the learning of the instrument and give them valuable studio experience time in a controlled way.
Hi! My name is Paul and I'd love to share the joy of playing the guitar with you! I have been a professional musician and teacher for over 20 years. I know much about playing the guitar and being an artist. I am passionate about music, which is why lessons with me are so fun. I know how to customize a program for the motivated student that will bring out the potential of the student at all levels. I will give the student a complete and practical program for advancement and help he or she discover their own talents at a pace that works for them. I even on occasion will conduct blues jams and
other challenges such as recording and how to do a You Tube video production that will give the student a chance to use their developing skills by themselves and with others. Here is feedback from one of the parents of a student of mine:
"Alex progressed much further with guitar than he did with piano and he actually got to the point where he enjoyed playing on his own. That was a great accomplishment and very impressive to me...you helped instill some discipline and over the course of your instruction, Alex learned a lot. You were always positive with him, even when that was difficult, and I admired that and still appreciate it. I always looked forward on Sunday mornings to hearing the material the two of you were working on and I know he enjoyed his lesson with you."
*** Lesson Details *** As a teacher, one of my biggest goals is to keep my students motivated and get them enthused about their music and committed to daily practice. I will strive to inspire my students, and ensure that all the while, they are having the time of their life! Practice and commitment are key. Students' curricula vary according to the student's goals and strengths and weaknesses. All students will learn how to play in tune and in time, know their fundamentals, work with music theory and learn how to use written materials. (And they will have fun learning!) More advanced students can learn about blues and jazz improvisation, slide guitar and also participate in blues jams with other students, record, and You Tube video production.
*** Studio Equipment *** All kinds of guitar and bass guitar equipment and portable hard disc recording equipment for student demo recordings.
*** Travel Equipment *** Students need a well functioning guitar, music stand, guitar tuner and metronome. Students will also need a notebook to organize written lessons I will hand out.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in blues and jazz mostly, but also have vast knowledge of rock music from it's blues roots to the more modern styles. I also can play in country style, and I play blues slide guitar.

I played a little guitar throughout my life but was lacking an understanding of how the instrument works. I found myself strumming a few cords here and there but never with focus or improvement. After only three lessons with Paul, I'm now jamming to rock and the blues!Paul was quickly able to access my level of playing and I'm now understanding how the fretboard works and most importantly having lots of fun during lessons and practice. He teaches with passion and doesn't simply open a book but rather instills his lifelong experience and philosophy into lessons. Many can teach the mechanics of guitar but with Paul, you'll also understand the soul.

Paul Rocks !!
I just had my 2nd lesson with Paul and felt inspired to write a review. I have wanted to learn guitar for many, many years now. In the past, I have always gotten frustrated -or bored- and gave up before I ever even learned a chord. Our 1st lesson, Paul started me with some very basic mechanics. It was just the right amount of information to keep me interested and challenged but not so much that I was overwhelmed the 1st week. From just 15 -30 minutes a day of practicing, I have already gained some flexibility in my fingers and am beginning to have a "feel" for the instrument. I have seen more improvement and learned more from Paul and the exercises he has given me in just 2 lessons than I have collectively ever learned from any other teacher in the past or any book or online tutorial. His knowledge of the instrument, as well as music theory, is vast and he knows how to break it down into digestible bits for maximum benefit to the student. So I am not only learning to play guitar, I am also being introduced to music theory in a very easy to understand manner. He is very patient and creates a safe and supportive environment in which to learn comfortably. I am SO glad I found him!!! His way of teaching really works or me ~ I feel hopeful, inspired and motivated for the first time ever in attempting to learn this instrument. Thank you Paul and Thank You Take Lessons !!

Great teacher, large knowledge of many genres.
Paul is an overall great teacher. Before I took lessons with him, I knew next to nothing about playing guitar. I might have known the "box" minor pentatonic scale and possibly aeolian as a mode. Then I started taking lessons with him for Metal, my personal genre of choice and I started learning at a far more accelerated rate. Fast forward to about 9 months ago (January 2012) and I'd also grown an interest in Jazz. Fortunately Paul is an excellent teacher in both genres and helped my tastes (in both) genres develop and now he teaches me in Jazz. I even went to the Berklee school of music five week summer program (I'm to young to apply to the school's full time program) and thrived there. I recently got my report card for the class and his extensive teaching of how to play guitar from playing jazz chords to complex music theory (we're learning about chromatic harmony with the use of secondary dominants and tritone substitutions) helped me get only A's and B's. The areas where I got A's include classes such as high level theory, ensemble classes, ear training and genre specific guitar labs. I only got B's in my reading and chord labs, my reading which has always been poor, and my chord lab which involved nothing but right handed chord charts (I'm a left handed guitarist). I dont think I would have been able to get these grades if i had a different teacher or were self-taught, even with my music classes I'd taken at school I was always ahead of the rest of the class thanks to my extensive knowledge of theory with Paul. Paul comes to my house, which makes getting ready for my lesson as easy as turning my amp onto standby for the Tubes to warm up.

Alex is a fantastic teacher and a super nice person! I have been singing my whole life in different choirs and vocal groups, mainly classical music. Six months ago I came to LA and I wanted to try something new and was interested in jazz. I found Alex on Take Lessons and have been taking lessons every week since then. Alex has taught me a lot of new techniques and I feel that I have a larger understanding for my voice and how I can use it in different ways to create different sounds and emotion. Alex has also encouraged me to sing with a mic and we have recorded a few songs. That was a whole new experience and very developing. Thank you Alex!

Alex helped me to build up my confidence in the very first lesson, which is important for a performer. He found my vocal was stressed when singing high notes and provided different methods to address it. Alex is also a very nice coach, I just feel relax and am having fun in his class.

Alex was great. Fun and funny. I left thinking I learned something and enjoyed it!
I attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and I have a BA in Music. I am a working pro musician, regularly playing all different kinds of gigs with different bands, as well as solo, and regular gigs on TV. I have taught music lessons, and guitar in particular, for 18 years. I play all styles, but my favorites are Rock, R&B, Country, Rockabilly, and Blues (I also enjoy playing jazz, classical, and other styles as well). My main instruments are guitar (electric and acoustic) and voice, but I play keyboards, bass, mandolin, and drums also.
*** Lesson Details *** I focus on a co
mprehensive approach, incorporating each student's natural abilities as well as musical interests - whether you want to learn how to play your favorite songs, learn all the skills to play with a band, or study music theory and advanced songwriting techniques, I can teach you! From playing as a hobby or to entertain friends and family to advanced college-level topics, we can cover whatever your specific goals are. Also, with student interest, I like to focus on music theory, and a deeper understanding of how songs/music work - in other words, rather than just teaching a student a song and being done with it, I like to focus on how and why the music works as it does, to enable students to put their own spin/style on it, play it in different keys, etc. I teach all skill levels, from brand-new beginners to advanced players.
Several of many possible topics of study include:
• Lead and rhythm styles and techniques -- both are essential to learn! • How to play solos and how to improvise • Styles and techniques of your favorite musicians/songwriters • Playing by ear and how to learn songs just by listening to them • Playing to accompany yourself or someone else singing • Developing parts and techniques to play with other musicians • Songwriting, and how to create riffs, hooks, and chord progressions • Reading chord charts • Music reading -- Optional, not at all essential to playing music, but a good skill to have
My teaching style is friendly and good-natured, I believe in positive encouragement and feedback, and don't believe in "guilt-tripping" or any other negativity toward students - playing music should be fun! I also love when students ask questions - I operate under the old saying that "there are no stupid questions!"
*** Studio Equipment *** Amplifier, music stand, computer with internet connection (for playback of songs from the internet or CDs)
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide blank manuscript/chord chart/tab paper. I expect the student to provide their own instrument (along with any related things such as amplifiers, guitar picks, strings, etc.) and to provide study books that we agree upon (if necessary). I am able to supply books if the student reimburses me at the time they receive them.
*** Specialties *** I tailor my teaching style to each student's aptitudes and interests. All music students learn differently, and it's my challenge as a music teacher to figure out what works best for each individual student to inspire them and to keep them excited and motivated about learning an instrument.

Highly recommended: Amazing teacher!
Mike is a patient, supportive and incredibly talented teacher. From music theory to practical application, he's got all the answers... And he makes learning fun!
I took guitar lessons more than ten years ago and found it frustrating and I was terribly uninspired. Recently I took my old guitar out of mothballs and was determined to make some progress on the dang thing. A good friend recommended Mike and I've been taking lessons for nine months with him.
What's great about Mike is that he customizes my lessons. I'm not learning out of a book (which, I could if wanted) but I'm learning the songs that I love and learning the theory behind the chords, too. Then he keeps building on what we just learned. I go home from my hour lessons and play for another two hours because I'm so inspired.
I can't recommend Mike highly enough. He's a gem of a music instructor in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles.
From a young age, I have been deeply involved in the musical community. I began studying piano when I was three, and throughout my education, I’ve learned from such accomplished instructors as Belle Mehus and Christopher Taylor. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from The University of Mary in North Dakota, I continue to study, teach, perform, and compose. I’ve also studied guitar and bass for nearly twenty years. I love playing and teaching these instruments because of the strong correlations between the way they are tuned and played and the way western music theory wor
ks—as well as the pure enjoyment that comes from them! Additionally, I have twenty years of education in oboe and other woodwind instruments. I was principle oboist for two orchestras and reached the third round of auditions for 3rd oboe in The Minnesota Orchestra in 2006. Lastly, I have been an active vocalist since being a boy soprano in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Requiem.
I genuinely enjoy all aspects and styles of music—whether I’m studying a Chopin Etude, playing Charles Mingus at a jazz gig, writing and performing with my rock band, or composing hip hop tracks for a short film. I am an easygoing teacher who gets results, and I would love to welcome more people to my diverse group of students.
*** Lesson Details *** I am very pleased with my teaching method because I help my students achieve great progress, as well as immense enjoyment. I have a fairly standard routine of teaching technique, theory, and musicality, but I keep a comfortable, laid-back environment. The result is solid, consistent advancement that might come from a stricter method of teaching, with a lesson experience that is more fun and loose.
I am also a highly versatile instructor. While there are certain things that I believe are always necessary when learning a musical instrument, I incorporate them into each student's distinct capabilities and preferences. In short, I can instill the same musical values in every student, whether they’re studying J.S. Bach, The Rolling Stones, or Rihanna.
I take my students' goals and musical preferences very seriously and strive to make every student happy. I am always open to any ideas a student might have, and I am available to answer questions at all times.
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide literature and some accessories. Student needs to have instrument, other accessories, and a music stand.
