Ray R.

Van Nuys, CA

About Ray

Hello!

My name is Ray - I'm 27 years old, born in Queens NY. I studied classical music for many years as a youngster at Aaron Copeland School of Music college preparatory program. Here I was also introduced to Jazz, and around the same time began experimenting with synthesizers. I went on to study Electronic Production & Design at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and quickly became a very sought after studio musician and performer.

I've been successfully teaching many instruments and proficiency levels for over 13 years now. I can say with pride that it is my passion, and I antici
pate teaching being a very important part of the rest of my life.

I enjoy reading science, math, and philosophy, and in addition to teaching I work as a pop music producer.

*** Lesson Details ***
I consider my music lessons unique because of 3 main reasons:

1. I have a very deep understanding of music, sound, and theory, and feel music to be one of my native languages.

2. I have devoted considerable amounts of time and energy studying neuroscience, which has greatly improved my understanding of the learning process.

3. I have been blessed with the tremendous amount of patience necessary to guide a student through the necessary steps it takes to learn at whatever pace is optimal, in order to maximize the efficiency of the learning process for each individual.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must have their own instrument, and purchase their own materials (books, etc).

*** Specialties ***
Classical music is my background, and what I believe to be the most cognitively and emotionally fulfilling style of music to study and play. That said, I'm also a big fan of pop music, and students very much enjoy learning their favorite songs from the radio.

I have an extremely thorough understanding of music theory, and am happy to incorporate as much or as little of that as the student's interest dictates, nevertheless maintaining the minimal amount of theory necessary to get the most out of learning music and the instrument.

Thanks for checking out my profile! Please contact me with any additional questions you may have. I'll do my best to get back to you right away.

My son and daughter both take from Ray and they love him!!! My daughter started with him after she had had 2 other teachers and she improved immediately. She loves going to Ray because he teaches her to play the songs that she likes. Now she plays so many songs for memory!! My son loves going to piano and is always excited to see Ray.

Classical Guitar

When I started taking lessons from Ray I was playing the electric guitar, although I had a classical guitar in my house I did not play it that often. I took my classical guitar once to class and then I started to learn how to play the classical guitar. I went from playing basic peaces of music to playing Minuet in G in a short time. From playing electric guitar about 3 or 4 years to playing classical music in about 1.5 to 2 years. Ray has helped me to increase my knowledge of music.

Thomas K.

Glendale, CA

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning clarinet lessons.

About Thomas

A Los Angeles-based composer, orchestrator, conductor, and educator, Thomas has earned a reputation as a reliable and effective music instructor. Thomas instructs students in piano, woodwinds, trumpet, music theory, and composition. He has led multiple after-school classes and private lessons (both online and in-person) for instrumentalists as an official teacher for Piano Keys 4 Kids, MusIQ Club, Music Teachers Network, and Music Lessons on Wheels. He has received praise over his varied and individual approaches to teaching that focus on realizing the full potential of his students, whom rang
e from kindergarteners to adults.

Thomas served as the arranger and orchestrator for the full-length stage musical Way Back When. His film credits include independent films HeartFelt, Return of the Dragon Sword, A Sense of Sound, and Disregarded, as well as the award-winning documentary GeoFORCE: A Journey to Understanding. He also provides original music to dancers. He has received commissions for concert music by the American Festival Pops Orchestra, Brigham Young University–Idaho concert band, Jazz 4 Justice, and the LDS Church. He has produced three concerts of his original music, including Emerge & Ascend, a benefit concert that raised $1,500. He has also acted as conductor in a number of studio recording sessions.

Thomas received his Masters of Music in Film Scoring from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program in Seattle, Washington where he studied with two-time Emmy winning film and television composer Hummie Mann. He received his Bachelor of Music in Composition from George Mason University where he studied composition under band composer Mark Camphouse and electronic composer Jesse Guessford, and conducting under Anthony Maiello. In the area of performance, he has studied saxophone under Rick Parrell (U.S. Army Band), Tyler Kuebler (USAF Airmen of Note), and Sandon Mayhew; and piano with John Healey and Danny Beal.

Originally from Boise, Idaho, Thomas currently resides in Los Angeles. A melodious and colorful composer, he hopes to continue bringing evocative, contemporary music to audiences everywhere.

Thomas taught Scarlet (8) flute for 6 months and was fantastic. Scarlet enjoyed the lessons and we wish he hadn't left Seattle. He put in place the building blocks that we hope will lead to Scarlet becoming an accomplished flautist in the coming years. Thanks Thomas!

Eric L.

Valley Village, CA

Hi, everybody! I've been teaching clarinet for 6 years now & love it. I have a non-traditional teaching style in the sense that I teach every student differently--because every student is different, with different strengths, different weaknesses, different interests, & different problems. My students learn technique, good sound, & musicality right out the gate. Good sound increases their love of the instrument. Good musicality is what sets each player apart. I look forward to meeting you!

About Eric

Hi, everybody! My name is Eric, and I've been teaching for quite some time. I started teaching at a pre-college program while at Temple University, where I studied with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and then switched to teaching for Music & Arts and in students' homes. I love music, especially the clarinet (although I wanted to play drums when I was in fourth grade, but don't tell anybody that). My teaching style is "non-traditional," according to one of my students, in the sense that I don't teach any two students the same way, mostly because no two students are the same. "His teachi
ng style is nontraditional and highly motivates young music students to practice playing their instruments." Non-traditional, see? But effective. I teach EVERYTHING right out the gate: technique, musicality, and sound (I find it's much easier to develop as a musician with a solid musical foundation, not just a technical one). I can't wait to meet you and start making music!

Eric is inventive, patient, resourceful, and adaptive in his teaching technique. He provided my son with strong, thorough, and challenging musical experiences that have made my 11-year-old the accomplished clarinetist he is today. Eric's impact on my son will be positive and long-lasting, nurturing a strong foundation for all his future musical endeavors.

Eric Lebrun is a knowledgeable, creative, and friendly clarinet teacher. He related very well to our 12/13 year old daughter. His teaching style is nontraditional and highly motivates young music students to practice playing their instruments. He offers his students a large range of music genres to maintain their interest and improve their playing skills. Eric was very reliable and flexible with scheduling lessons. His broad experience in the music industry also was an asset when we needed assistance in recording audition pieces. Our family would highly recommend Eric as clarinet teacher!!

Eric was Jaydon's first saxophone teacher. He did a wonderful job capturing and keeping my son's interest in music, and developing it. This is not an easy task when working with an active 10 year old boy. Eric's style of teaching was a good balance between being child-driven, yet teacher controlled. Instead of practice time being imposed, Jaydon's practices were as a result of his own desire to master pieces that he connected with. Eric did not feed Jaydon any answers, requiring complete engagement, and making him an active learner. He even required Jaydon to rate his own playing, then explain his rating before giving feedback. Jaydon's recently started lessons with another teacher, who frequently comments on the quality of sound that Jaydon is able to achieve on his saxophone, as well as his ability to play high notes well for someone his age.

Sara B.

Los Angeles, CA

After actively playing the clarinet for 15 years and teaching more and more frequently as time went on, I'm now available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of technical skills. I specialize in tone development, typically use Essential Elements and J.B. Albert books, and also have a wide variety of music to practice with and gain appreciation for great clarinet repertoire.

About Sara

Hi, there! My name is Sara and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching clarinet lessons off and on since 2010 and have loved helping my students learn correct technique, train their ears, and develop a rich tone. I went to the University of Wisconsin-Superior and earned a degree in Music in 2013. I then went to Columbia College in Chicago and received a degree in Music Composition for the Screen. I'm a kind and patient person and my teaching style is laid back and personalized, based on the progress of each student. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!
