*** Lesson Details ***
I want YOUR DRIVE AND PASSION TO PLAY DRUMS to set the pace for our lessons. A motivated and aspiring player leaves endless possibilities behind the kit! Lessons will start with a nice, rudimental warmup to get those hands and muscles warm. We'll focus on playing technique, muscle memory, as well as the key rudiments played by marching drummers and drum set players worldwide. Once we're warm, we'll move to getting that full, so
lid sound out of the drum set. Focusing again on technique (behind the kit now) and basic patterns to work on getting a great sound. We'll finish up by playing/jamming to your songs of choice, or me playing an instrument (guitar) along with you. You'll leave the lesson eager to practice, learn, and grow as a drummer and musician. I will work with each student individually to set a goal to meet by the next week's lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Acoustic Drums, DW Drum set/practice pad, single drum pads/practice pads used.

*** Travel Equipment ***

Felipe G.

San Antonio, TX

Want to get a head start for school? I can help!

About Felipe

Hello and thank you for viewing my profile. My name is Felipe Garcia and I am a self-taught music teacher. I began teaching music in 2010 and have loved it ever since. I believe learning to play music can be fun and easy, and I work hard to make sure your experience with music is one that will inspire you to keep playing for the rest of your life, for as Friedrich Nietzsche said, “without music, life would be a mistake.”

My experience with music began long ago when I begged my parents to buy me a drumset and they finally gave in and bought me one when I was 14. Prior to that, I had no real
experience with music except as a listener. I taught myself how to play by playing along with CDs of my favorite bands and eventually I felt like the drums wasn't enough, so I talked my parents into buying me a guitar. Just like with the drums, I taught myself to play the guitar by playing along with my favorite songs and favorite bands. Eventually I began performing in various bands, began writing my own songs, learned to play a variety of instruments, and developed enough confidence in my musical abilities to pursue a degree in music. Soon I would earn a bachelor’s degree in music theory from the University of North Texas and a master’s in music theory from Texas State University. Since then, I've been teaching music and performing in various San Antonio-area bands.

My teaching style is laid-back, yet I can be intense for students who really want to master the art of music. I understand that all students are different. There are many ways to learn music and I work hard to create lessons that fit the student’s individual style. I don’t shout instructions at students and expect them to do what I want; instead I try to create a positive environment where the students feel comfortable to express themselves however they feel.

Since I taught myself to play, I’ve always felt like an outsider in the music world. I always thought that since I taught myself, those who took lessons were better than me, and since I was never a band person in high school or college, I always felt intimidated by those who were. However recently I’ve learned that the best musicians are not the ones who have been playing the longest, but are the ones who love to do it, and as my student, it is my promise to you that you will love it too!

In addition to being tons of fun, learning to play music can affect your life in so many ways. Studies show that learning to play music facilitates the learning of other subjects and helps to develop the areas of the brain that are associated with language and reasoning, as well as supports spatial intelligence. Learning music also helps creative thinking, problem solving, and self-expression, as well as enhances discipline, craftsmanship, and the ability to work in a team. Learning music also provides opportunities to learn about the world and helps to develop compassion and respect for cultures that are not our own. And finally, music makes us take risks and provides us with a chance to conquer fear and anxiety.

Neil D.

Boerne, TX

* Finally, a comprehensive instrumental course for students of all ages and experience levels that includes:

- Information on brands, supplies, and guidance with professional organizations

- Weekly lessons to develop and improve skills with proper stick control, daily rudiments, dynamics, rhythmic meters…and more!

- Music theory (includes music history topics) with emphasis on technology and composition

- Maintenance and repair tips

- Advanced techniques: Improvising, ornamentation, world music styles, etc.

- Chamber music (accompaniment) to prepare for public performances

About Neil

I am a music educator of 11 years: I have taught both middle school band and choir to at-risk youth, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy. My principal instrument is the saxophone (which I began playing in 1990), and I play many other instruments. As for my formal education: I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2005 from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010).

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal is to create life-long musicians...
I focus on the needs an
d interests of my students, thereby representing all musical genres and including all cultures.
My lessons are structured into activities that incorporate various aspects of music appreciation:
Music theory, music history, music technology, performance practice, etc. (making such lessons comprehensive)

*** Studio Equipment ***
As a musician of 25 years, I believe it is the "musician that makes the instrument", and not the other way around. That is, I do not believe it is necessary to purchase the 'top' brand for your instrument in order to achieve the desired sound. Frequent practice builds skills and results in the desired tones people wish to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I always bring my instrument, metronome, tuner, music stand and stand for my instrument, including lesson materials and supplies.
I expect students to obtain a metronome and to always have their music folder (with ALL music etc.) available for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
All genres, all styles & all cultures! I teach students of all ages--mostly at my home studio, but I also travel to students' homes, churches, and, as an alternative during the Summer only, I am willing to meet with students in the Practice Rooms in the Fine Arts Building at UTSA.

San Antonio, TX

The studio is ready to rock with an 8-piece Pearl drum kit. We'll use it to dissect rhythm and create the most simple to the most syncopated rhythms. As long as your foot can reach the kick drum pedal, you can play drums!!!

Many students enjoy sprinkling basic drum technique into their lessons, regardless of the instrument their leaning, giving them a chance to feel rhythm a little more directly. Rock on!

About Michael

Hello! I'm Michael. Music has been 'my thing' since I found a guitar in my Mom's closet at age 9 and didn't move until figured out "Mary Had A Little Lamb". That's the curiosity I try to instill in my students! Although I started playing trumpet and guitar in elementary school, my music education at University of Texas in SA opened up musical doors I never knew existed! Currently I teach trumpet, guitar, piano, drums and saxophone, ages 6 to 45, as well as play trumpet around town when the sun goes down. I passionately emphasize music reading ability, improv techniques through jazz studies, an
d a solid music theory foundation- no matter what age you are!!!

LESSONS DETAILS
Every lesson, concepts are reviewed and emphasized, then we crawl forward through new music, discussing the technique and theory of every piece we play. I've accumulated an expansive library of teaching material to create a very diverse path when exploring the wonderful world of music. I always try to include a classical piece and a jazz piece in the repertoire. Popular music and original compositions are fun encouraged too!
Whatever your idea of music is, we will build on it, playing pieces you want to play!

THE INSTRUMENTS
A variety of instruments are at our disposal here in the studio, including...

Piano & electric keyboard, acoustic and electric guitars, trumpet & cornet, clarinet, flute, upright acoustic bass, 7-piece drum set & auxiliary percussion.

THE HOUSE
The house is very friendly and comfortable, great with children and families. Lots of natural light! There's a large front porch patio to relax on while you wait with a good book, or you can hang out inside with the siblings watching something on Netflix. I'll even give you the Wifi password ;)

Music Theory · In studio
I recently began taking lessons with Michael on understanding more about music theory with the objective of becoming a better guitarist and song writer. Not only the knowledge I have gained, but the overall improvement of my musicianship in such a short amount of time has greatly surpassed my expectations. I would highly recommend Michael to any musician looking to take their craft to the next level.

After just a few lessons with Michael I could see instant improvements in my guitar playing and truly started to understand more and more about my instrument, and just music in general. My lessons are always a good time with Michael and i look forward to each one every week. He's a great teacher and musician and I definitely recommend him to everyone.

Kristi T.

San Marcos, TX

In lessons we will be extremely detail oriented developing all aspects of performance with a strong emphasis on technique. We will work on exercises that develop strength and accuracy on all instruments and apply those techniques to larger solo works. Subjects will range from the development of proper practice techniques, performance preparation, to note accuracy, sight reading, musicality and dynamic range and beyond depending on the level of the student.

About Kristi

I am a passionate music educator with 10 years of experience. I am an active educator, clinician, arranger and performer in Central Texas working with groups and individuals at all skill levels. I am the Co-Director of the newly formed WGI Open class group Violet Crown Independent and am also on staff as a front ensemble instructor with Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Texas State University where I studied under Genero Gonzales, Kari Klier and Bobby Lopez. In 2011, I earned the opportunity to perform with the PASIC 50th Anniversary Marimba Orchestra in I
ndianapolis, IN. I was also afforded the opportunity to perform showcase performances at PASIC in 2003 and 2006 with the Brazoswood High School Percussion Ensemble.

Teaching music in all areas is my passion. Whether it is in the area of percussion performance, native percussion, drum set, marimba or in music theory and aural training I can help you grow and achieve your goals as a musician.
