Improvising and arranging music is one of the most enjoyable things I think a musician can do. It lets you use your creative skills to their fullest potential! My favorite thing is to play by ear, pick up on different styles and then try them out at the piano. We can help you do the same! Whether it's jazz, swing, pop, blues or you name it, we can help you make a great song out of anything! Listening to styles you want to copy, then using your ear and your playing skills to make it happen is what it's all about. Feel like that's a challenge? We'll work together to help you overcome those obstacles such as playing ability and knowledge by teaching you techniques and music theory so that you can be a great improv artist! Come with your ideas and let's have fun! Specialties: Transposing tunes, Reading off of chord charts, Using Fake Books, Playing for special events Note: For requests on how to write a great tune, see the Composition category on my page below

Note: I very strongly suggest sending a message before booking to make sure I can meet your needs in your lessons! To me, learning to compose is a balance between pushing the boundaries of what you're comfortable writing and ensuring you're still writing music that you're proud of at the end of the day. I'm a big proponent of having a strong theory foundation. However, having a solid background in music theory is like having a well-stocked toolbox: the tools aren't going to build the house by themselves! It's still up to you to take those tools and create something with them! I do have a few books I'm partial to if the student wants to work from a book specifically, but in general I try to cater every lesson to the student's specific goals. Different people want to write different kinds of music, and I am happy to explore whatever genre you're interested in writing!

I am professional arranger and I am on faculty at the City College of New York (CUNY) and I have taught instrumentation and arranging for six years. Depending on your level, I will can cover the basics such as instrument ranges, transposition and capabilities to more advanced topics such as orchestration and how to write idiomatically for each instrument. I generally teach from the Adler book but also have my own method using scores from the standard repertoire.

This system can take you from the very beginner level to composing freely in a shorter time than you ever imagined possible! We use a natural system. You learn how to create sounds that match the melody. You will listen differently than you ever did before. Come and harmonize a melody and you will never look at creating music the same way again. This is a modern system, but solidly rooted in groundwork thoughtfully prepared in the 1800's!
