Daniel A.

Aurora, CO

About Daniel

Now accepting students in Aurora, Co. and surrounding areas!!!

In addition to teaching music, I have also worked as a special education assistant and wrestling/track coach at Lake Zurich Middle Sch
ool South and an assistant Kung Fu/Tai Chi instructor at Green Mountain Arts in Logan Square, Chicago, Illinois. Jazz piano, Voice, and Composition are my main areas of expertise. However, I have also been recording, and playing guitar almost my entire life. I fully believe in music education not only for entertainment and personal enjoyment, but for many other means. Beyond its capacity for being used as entertainment, music aids in learning, helps develop advanced motor skills, increases memory function, and many other purposes for a well rounded education. It is my goal to help educate the next generation in traditional music practices as well as incorporate new techniques that are relevant to our current day and age.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson plans vary from person to person. I always make it a point to get to know the student's existing musical knowledge, goals, and background before I create a personalized lesson plan. All important concepts are covered as they are needed so students can understand theoretical concepts based upon actual application and usage. In short, I teach in a way that students can "dig in" right away and play, create, improvise, sing and/or compose freely and naturally. I always encourage students or parents to contact me with their goals, previous musical training, etc., and discuss what they really want out of lessons so they can get the most out of taking me on as an instructor.

About a year ago I decided I wanted to start writing poetry again. It was something I’d enjoyed doing years before, but I stopped because I had trouble completing poems or felt that the ones I did complete were not as good as they could be. I then decided that I needed to find someone who would guide me through the process and offer feedback and guidance along the way. I was very fortunate to find Thomas Ramey Watson. He is a pleasure to work with. I have been working with Tom on a weekly basis for almost a year. As an educator and writer of poetry, prose, and scholarly articles, Tom's extensive literary knowledge enhances my ability to add depth and breadth to my own work. We generally begin each session with a poem that I feel I have worked through the best I can. Going line by line, stanza by stanza, Tom helps me discover parts of the poem I may want to explore further and helps me accentuate the most powerful parts of the poem. He tells me what he thinks works and what does not, and offers concise guidance on ways to improve. It has been a joy to watch my poetry evolve in different ways and for them truly to come to life. I would encourage anyone who wants to write the best poetry they can to consider working with Tom. He won't write it for you, but he will give you the tools and guidance needed to do it yourself. I've learned that writing a poem is truly a process, and it can take a considerable amount of time to complete just one poem. However, when your poem is done, you will know that it truly is done and be left with a piece of writing that you can be proud of.

I am confident that anyone who has worked with him on various forms of prose writing and studied literature with him can say the same.

I was really pleased with my first session with Thomas. I signed up with Thomas because I wanted someone to help me develop a poem that I am working on. Thomas offered some very valuable feedback and ideas to strengthen my work. To find someone with so much experience as an educator, someone who has written several books, and someone who is passionate about what they do is really quite a gift. I would encourage anyone who is looking to become a better writer to consider Thomas. I am looking forward to my future sessions with him.

Spencer M.

Boulder, CO

About Spencer

I'm a senior student at the University of Colorado - Boulder, and I'm a History major with an emphasis in American History. The boring part about me is that I have an "A" range GPA with exemplary test
scores in reading, writing, and composition. However, the most helpful experience I've ever had in writing was simply by tutoring others, like you. I'm candid in my teaching style, and to best help you in writing endeavors the most important thing I can do is let you express yourself naturally. Formulaic rubrics such as "5 Paragraph Essays" are not the ticket to being a better writer. What's most important is a strong argument. I want to help you bring out that inner voice.

I'm a massive dork when it comes to History, and have read a biography on every President of the United States. I love to share my historical fun facts with my friends and family, even though it often drives them crazy when they aren't as excited as me! I look forward to working with you!
