Jonathan S.

Winchester, VA

About Jonathan

About

I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

Education & Teaching Experience:

I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical
Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 from the Florida Department of Education. I have taught in Florida as a preferred substitute for general music classes, K-12. In college, I have given study sessions for music theory levels ranging from 4-part writing to post-serialism.

Degrees:
Doctorate of Musical Arts: Guitar Performance; Shenandoah University, expected May 2017/2018
Master of Music: Guitar Performance; University of Akron, May 2014
Bachelor of Music: Guitar Performance; Stetson University, 2011

While giving lessons:
I ensure that every student receives fundamental foundation pertaining to the subject. While learning the basics, I advise that the student organizes their lessons and materials in a way that displays progress over time. With the proper knowledge, we can treat the heart of a subject with refinement in order to grasp it's purpose and reason---whether its music or math.

Why?
My students have grown with confidence through a sense of accomplishment. Success does not only affect a person's well-being but can also impact other dimensions of their lives.

About Annie

I graduated from Boston College with a B.A. in Music and Communication in 2013. Then I earned M.S. in educational studies: ESOL at Johns Hopkins while working full time as a public school teacher in Baltimore. At Highlandtown Elementary Middle School, I was the Strings Program Director with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids. I recently graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Education Policy and Management.

I absolutely love working with children in every aspect, especially music. I've been teaching privately for about 7 years now and my students have become accomplished violinists! I focus on making violin fun and awarding to allow children to appreciate music and to challenge themselves to a higher rigor. Megan T.

Washington, DC

About Megan

Hi, there! My name is Megan and I can't wait to meet you! I've just started teaching private lessons this year, but have previously been a coach, substitute teacher, and in my day to day job I work with and advise college students. I love helping my students see the big picture, break down the necessary steps that will lead them towards success, and help them understand things in a way that makes sense to them.

I went to the College of Wooster (OH) and earned a degree in History in 2008. I also attended George Washington University and earned a masters in Education & Human Development (conc
entration in Higher Education Administration) in 2014.

I'm personable, upbeat, and even a little silly at times. My teaching style is encouraging, communicative, and fun. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

I usually do everything I can to help my 3rd grade daughter with her school work. However, I had a pretty big deadline for work coming up, and didn't have the time to devote to help my daughter study for her test on ancient Greece (especially as she kept juxtaposing it with the Roman Empire!) that I would've liked. Enter Megan.

Coordinating the specifics, Megan was super communicative and was punctual, arriving on time for our appointment. My daughter is not always the best at staying engaged for a long period of time, but Megan did a great job of keeping her interested and finding ways to help my daughter retain the information. They ended up making a digital comic book about Greece using Lego characters and a shoe box. I have never seen my daughter so excited about learning. I think I might have to have work deadlines more often!

I recently participated in a service trip to New York City where Megan served as our staff learning partner. She did a wonderful job of guiding us during the service activities and facilitating meaningful reflections following our work. Whenever we spoke with leaders of the organizations we volunteered at, Megan asked questions that furthered our knowledge of the organization and what they do. She was completely engaged in every aspect of the trip, and she made herself available to talk with us about anything we wanted to discuss. She also extended this invitation beyond the trip, and assured us that she would remain available should we ever wish to reach out to her on a professional or personal level. Furthermore, she did an incredible job of guiding our group of 14 through the complicated NYC subway system! Megan is incredibly responsible, mature, and knowledgeable, and I am very grateful to have spent my spring break getting to know her!

Megan was a joy to work with. She came to our home to assist my son who was struggling in his AP English class. Not only did she help him gain a better grasp on the literature (The Once and Future King and some Shakespeare), she worked patiently with him to hone his writing skills and improve upon his study skills. The study and organizational tips Megan offered him have helped him improve in other classes. She was punctual and responsive and my son really enjoyed working with her - it was also a great perk that Megan offered lacrosse-filled study breaks.
