I teach reading rhythms, playing with a bend and how to groove!
I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.
*** Lesson Details *** I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompa
ny students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.
*** Travel Equipment *** They should have their own instrument and a music stand.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in jazz improvisation on piano and guitar. I also teach recreational guitar and piano for adults, including classical and blues styles. I coach bass players and drummers in playing stylistically correct grooves for jazz, rock and latin music.

Mike is fun and smart. He customizes the lesson to my taste in music and what I want to learn. He's great! Recommend!

I've been taking lessons from Mike for about 6 months now and his enthusiasm and supportive approach are invaluable. This is my 3rd time trying lessons and the first time I've continued past the first couple sessions. And the reason is Mike. He's extremely talented, but more importantly, he's a phenomenal teacher. He explains things simply, concisely, and effectively. I leave every lesson enthused and excited to go home and practice. I can't recommend him highly enough. Mike's the man!

Mike S will teach you how to allow yourself to learn a new instrument!
Mike really is incredible. The guitar looked so complicated and confusing before I met Mike. He really teaches you how to allow yourself to learn a new instrument. Within a month I was improvising over simple changes with my own ideas! And within 2 or 3 months, the amount of chord structures I had at my disposal was mind blowing. The speed at which I became comfortable with the instrument was amazing. I really believe that Mike's simple teaching style really was a key part in my ability to play and grow on a new instrument. Other than that, he is one of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet and play with. He gives so much of his time to his community by teaching anyone from child to infinity and even bringing them together to create bands to showcase every persons different talents. He is a beautiful human being and I do actively suggest him to anyone that tells me they want to learn either piano, guitar, or bass.
I grew up in Minnesota and started playing guitar when I was 13. Self-taught for three years, I developed a passion and love for music. Upon turning 16, I expanded my knowledge studying with a local guitarist, a musical genius in my opinion, who made a huge impact on my playing. In the fall of 2007 I relocated to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute for guitar performance. I graduated in 2009
Over the course of the last nine years I've been a part of six different live performing bands and currently work with my original band comprised entirely of Musicians Institute graduates, Delp
hian. Delphian can be seen and heard featured on screen in the Mike Judge film “Extract”. I study, perform and have vast knowledge in the styles of blues, classical, country, folk, jazz, metal and rock n' roll. Everyday as I continue to grow as a teacher and musician, so does my love for the guitar. I very much enjoy sharing my knowledge and seeing each of my students progress and grow as musicians.
*** Lesson Details *** Every lesson will be tailored exactly to what you want to learn. We can cover specific topics such as music theory, harmony and improvisation, but if you would prefer to just work on learning your favorite songs, that's precisely what we'll do. Let me know what you want to learn and it will be done. We'll monitor your progress to help reach your goals. Most importantly, we will have fun while learning!
*** Studio Equipment *** Acoustic and electric guitars and basses, amps, cables, music stands, PC with QBase recording software
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide my own equipment. Guitar, amp, and cables. Students should have their own guitar and amp.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in rock and metal, but I love to teach other styles like classical guitar, blues, jazz, and country.

We started off with a different drum instructor who turned out to be very unreliable. I asked take lessons to provide me with someone with good reviews. Someone who is punctual and reliable, that's when we met Jason. Jason is a super amazing instructor who has incredible patience. My son Nathan has never had any musical education before. After taking lessons with Jason for about three months he has a vast knowledge in playing drums and reading music. Jason utilizes his time very productively during lessons with no rush. He even goes to the extent to recommend and suggest products that will help Nathan improve. He is very humble, sweet and trustworthy. My family is glad that he came along. Thank you Jason from all of us.

Jason is a great, cool, and awesome guitar teacher. He has good taste in music and knows a lot of good ways of teaching me. I have improved a lot over the last few months since he came. My guitar solos are improving...and we have a lot of fun jamming. He is the BEST guitar teacher ever!
Drumset only. I can teach students a variety of basic drum grooves in a variety of styles and can help students understand how to incorporate fills into their playing. I can also teach reading basics.
I have been happily playing music for over half of my life and it has always been the light in my day. Now it is my hope to shed that same light onto you or your child. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience, even more importantly I love teaching and music with a passion.
I have been playing an instrument since the 4th grade (cello) and, as I learned how music works, was slowly able to pick-up a greater variety instruments with an increasing degree of ease. In high school, I decided to pick-up the guitar just to "have fun and rock out". I join
ed a band, played in the high school orchestra, joined the high school jazz band and began to practice songwriting and cover songs. Still, it was not until after I took my first class on music theory that I knew how much I not only loved the thrill of playing music but the discovery of how it worked. With this experience I can show you or your child why learning an instrument can be not only an exciting experience but an interesting and enthralling one as well.
I have been teaching music for over 5 years and have had experience with children as young as 5 to adults in their late 80's. I am a very attentive teacher who can not only help get you moving in the right direction but keep you on that path until your are a self-sufficient musician. A status that allows you to learn whatever you want on your instrument by yourself, whether it be for business, pleasure or for mere self-improvement.
I have had the chance to study with graduates of the Musician's Institute (MI), the California Institute of the Arts (CAL Arts) and Berklee College of Music. This has given me an inside look into how and what each institute teaches, as well as a first hand look at the techniques and ideas that the great players from these remarkable schools have come to produce.
My formal music education consists of 2 years at Pasadena City College where I obtained my general Associates Degree (much of the studies included music) and a semester at California State University Long Beach as a Jazz Guitar Performance Major. Additionally I have taken a great deal of classes in California State University Long Beach's teaching credential program, where I learned strategies and theories of how and what to teach my students - making me that much more effective at my craft. At Pasadena City College I studied with jazz/classical guitarist, Ron Berman, who has played with such jazz greats as Herb Ellis and Jimmy Wyble. At Cal State Long Beach I studied with jazz guitarist Ron Eschete, a former teacher at MI who has toured with the likes of Ray Brown, John Dizzy Gillespie and Jim Hall.
Most importantly I hope to show you or your child a new way to love and appreciate music. And to provide you with the ability to have the most fun on your instrument as possible.
I am also part of Takelessons Skype lessons program (lessons that take place on the internet via Skype) for those looking for a more convenient or affordable way to take music lessons from home.
*** Lesson Details *** Throughout my lessons, I always encourage basic skills including scales, sight-reading and technical exercises. But what I hope to give all my students is a basic understanding of music and their instrument, providing them with a practical ability to navigate the vast world of music for a lifetime.
Beyond these skills, I always have songs, styles and theory for you to work on but I am often more interested in what you as an individual want to learn on your instrument. Getting to learn concepts that you have chosen yourself will help encourage practice and will make the finished product all the more the rewarding.
I can custom tailor a teaching curriculum and/or style for any of my students: we can focus on learning songs, learning to read, how to write music, how music works, and even how to play specific styles of music (including funk, rock, jazz, Latin, flamenco, classical, country and blues). I also self tailor my own worksheets and set weekly goals with my students to help encourage practice, understanding and progress. For students interested in more advanced concepts, I can also teach ear training, music theory, advanced jazz improvisation as well as advanced playing techniques.
And... all this in a friendly and easy-going teaching environment.
*** Studio Equipment *** Located in my home garage, it is equipped with a small stage, an upright piano, an electric keyboard, a PA system, amplifiers, a drum set, a lap steel guitar, a pedal steel guitar, 2 cellos, multiple guitars, a mandolin, a dobro, 2 5-string banjos, a 4-string tenor banjo, a ukulele, 2 accordions and 2 electric basses.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide a guitar, cello (a full size), electric bass, a banjo, an amp, an accordion, cords and the occasional pick to students (sorry no spare mandolin or ukulele). I would only require an outlet and room to practice in; if the student could bring a pick that would be fantastic as well! I can also bring acoustic guitars if an outlet is unavailable and if that is in fact the kind of guitar the student wants to learn.
For piano students, it is best that they have their own piano or keyboard at their home; if the student is unable to obtain a piano for the first few lessons I do have a mobile keyboard but would require a fair amount of setting up.
*** Specialties *** Styles: Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Metal, Funk, Progressive Rock, Classical, Folk, Bluegrass, Country, Various forms of Latin Music, Blues, and a few others.
Instruments: Beginning to Intermediate - Drums, Accordion and Piano.
Focus on rudiments, fundamentals, technique. Snare solos, and different set techniques.
Drum lessons are only offered at the student's location.
Hi, I'm Bri! I'm a graduate of North Central College with a BA in Music (Emphasis in Composition and Percussion) and a minor in History. I absolutely love music, every single aspect of it. I want and love to make music a part of everybody's lives who want and need it. I want to help you with your musical needs. I have been playing percussion for 16 years, singing for 22, and playing piano for 18 years. I am currently in a recording and performing Chicago band, Oblio and Arrow where I provide backing vocals and help with the song arrangements. I also record vocals for different artists hooks, j
ingles, choruses, and entire songs (covers and originals).
History has always fascinated me. They way our world has developed and changed, and continues to evolve is amazing. Everything can be tied back to the past, and I feel it's important to take a look back, put yourself in that time, and really study how things were to help understand why things are the way they are now.
Crocheting and knitting are a couple of good habits/hobbies I picked up about 6 years ago. I sell scarves online and I'm always working on some sort of project. I will have you knitting and pearling with the best of them!
Music, history, crochet, and knitting....I'm your girl!

I went to college with Brianna and we were in the same concert band. She is a highly skilled musician! She definitely inspired me to grow as a musician myself by helping me learn songs and being a great player/singer herself. After college I joined an originals band. After a time we needed another singer/percussionist/keyboard player. I immediately thought of her and she shortly joined after and was an amazing fit!
As a former band member of Brianna's I very highly recommend that you take lessons with her. She is incredibly helpful, positive, skilled, and a genuinely good person who is easy to work with.

Athan is such a patient instructor. With me being an "older" student who doesn't learn as fast as I used to, he is very encouraging and nurturing. He is very talented and overall a great teacher. I hope I will become as good as him as a drummer one day. =)

I really enjoy Athan's approach to teaching. He changed my life musically!!!

"Perry is a talented drummer and teacher who's defiantly been around the block before. However this experience doesn't taint his ability to teach. He's alw
ays open to new things and new ways of explaining something. Perry's goofy personality keeps lessons lively and he always knows the best way to go about learning something. He doesn't push anything and doesn't gloat during lessons like a lot of teachers do. I've known Perry for almost 2 years and am still taking lessons from him. I highly recommend him as a friend and a teacher/drumming mentor."

"Mike is the best teacher!
My son has been taking drum lessons from Mike for about 6 years consistently. Mike is an amazing instructor and all around grea
t person. My son has learned so much from Mike, enjoys going to his lessons every week(the ONLY activity that he has done that there is NO complaining about going to lessons, only enthusiasm). He has grown leaps and bounds with his level of drumming, all due to Mike. Mike's studio is high tech, his teaching ability and knowledge of all kinds of genres of music and general positive encouragement and attitude make Mike the best drum instructor. He is a great role model for my son, as well. You can't go wrong with Mike!"

"Brian is one of the most gifted drummers I've ever met. His teaching style is extremely relaxed. Every time I meet with him, he puts me at ease. Brian
makes learning an instrument fun. His approach is direct and straight to the point. He's also very perceptive and focuses specifically on what he feels I am having trouble with the most. I have been taking lessons from Brian for over a year now, and I cannot believe how much I have grown as a musician. I am even playing in front of my friends now. My confidence is high and owe it all to Brian!"

"Mike is an absolute professional. I had the pleasure of working and learning from him over a two year period. His approach to music is creative, fun and e
ducational. He creates an atmosphere of ease, where ideas can roam freely. His skill lies in understanding and instructing academic music theory in an easy and exciting way. With Mike, you not only get a perfect theory base but you will be able to explore your full potential to become an amazing, confident drummer. Trust me, he has helped me a lot in the way I see music today. Thanks Mike."
