Songwriting is an art as well as a craft. In my lessons, I cover basic song structures in a variety of styles including blues, pop, rock, country, and jazz, lyrical content, melodic phrasing, and telling a story. Guitar is my preferred instrument for these lessons, so a background in basic guitar fundamentals is recommended, although some introductory guitar can be included with these lessons.
I received my education at the University of Wisconsin, majoring in Jazz Guitar. I've studied with some of the best guitarists in the Midwest, and have performed live and in recording studios all across the country in a variety of styles (Rock, Metal, Bluegrass, Jazz, Classical, Country). I've performed internationally, and my playing has been featured on several prime time television shows. I've always had a love of music, and it’s a passion that I try to instill in all of my students! Through focus on note reading, chords, improvisation, and technique, I try to give my students tools that they can take with them throughout their musical journey, whether playing music for fun or professionally! *** Lesson Details *** I like to be laid back and very individual with my approach. I'm a piano teacher, pianist, composer, songwriter, singer, and lifetime music lover in beautiful Los Angeles, California. I began playing piano at age 7 and was forever smitten with learning music! I progressed rapidly and by high school I was winning multiple competitions and talent shows and performed as a featured artist with local youth orchestras in Corpus Christi, Texas. When I was 16, I began teaching piano and music theory to my peers and to kids. Then it was off to Austin where at the University of Texas I studied composition (piano principal under Dr. Betty Mallard) and wrote and arranged for keys (of course) as well as voice, strings, and choral groups I sang in. I'm a fun, laid-back person and my teaching style reflects that. However I thrive on doing things the right ...
I've been writing songs for over 10 years now. I like to explore processes and really like to deconstruct lyric and through line. My songs have been featured on 'Pretty Little Liars', 'The Fosters' and the feature film 'The Masked Saint' due out in the fall of 2014
I started playing music at age 9, when my mom decided to put me in piano lessons. Much to her surprise, I fell in love with the instrument and played non-stop, sometimes skipping dinner to read through a new piece or practice for an up coming competition. After winning a few state wide competitions, I enrolled in an arts high school to practice my craft, and be around other creative high school students. While in High School, I started writing music and singing in a 16 member chamber choir. The summer before my senior year, I won the prestigious Berklee songwriting competition and was awarded a scholarship to the school, which I decided to decline to make my way towards the music mecca of Los Angeles. I received a Bachelor's degree from CalArts where I focused on contemporary ...
