Jordan R.

Monrovia, CA

Songwriting is an art as well as a craft. In my lessons, I cover basic song structures in a variety of styles including blues, pop, rock, country, and jazz, lyrical content, melodic phrasing, and telling a story. Guitar is my preferred instrument for these lessons, so a background in basic guitar fundamentals is recommended, although some introductory guitar can be included with these lessons.

About Jordan

I received my education at the University of Wisconsin, majoring in Jazz Guitar. I've studied with some of the best guitarists in the Midwest, and have performed live and in recording studios all across the country in a variety of styles (Rock, Metal, Bluegrass, Jazz, Classical, Country). I've performed internationally, and my playing has been featured on several prime time television shows. I've always had a love of music, and it’s a passion that I try to instill in all of my students!

Through focus on note reading, chords, improvisation, and technique, I try to give my students tools that
they can take with them throughout their musical journey, whether playing music for fun or professionally!

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to be laid back and very individual with my approach. I always introduce a curriculum designed to teach basic chords, note reading, and basic theory, but I also understand that each student has a particular set of interests, and I want to inspire them to follow those interests. Whether it's Rock, Blues, Country, Folk, or Classical, I want to give my students the tools and understanding that they need to excel at the music that drives them.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to have everything that they need to practice the materials that I give them, including an instrument, amplifier and tuner if necessary, and a music stand. I provide all lesson materials.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in rock, metal, country, blues, and jazz with an emphasis on theory and technique.

My Name is Hilarie and I'm 49 years old and I took a 40 year hiatus from playing the Piano. I can tell you that my skill level is that of a beginner with a mind set of at least intermediate . I have completed my 7th week with Jordan as my teacher. He has been exceptional in his patience, professionalism and most of all encouragement! Our lessons are well rounded and he helps me to focus on the fundamentals I need to achieve my goals . Very respectful and polite. I highly recommend Jordan to all who wish for musical instruction. And I must add that he is very cute/handsome! :)

All four of my children have taken lessons with Jordan, in piano and acoustic guitar. Jordan has a natural way with children, and adapts his style and lessons to the individual needs of each child. Jordan's musical gifts, and his gift of relating to and teaching, children makes him and excellent teacher. I recommend him whole-heartedly.

Have you wanted to write your own music? I have a degree in composition (classical, jazz, pop, songwriting, and arranging; piano and vocal focus); I write and teach primarily for piano, voice, and strings. And of course there are dozens of styles and instruments at your disposal; the rules and options are endless, and I can guide you as you explore and make music.

Composition & Songwriting instruction includes:
-- songwriting & song structure: writing a good chorus, telling a story with verses
-- lyrics and storytelling
-- arranging / orchestration / instrumentation / parts
-- classical, pop, Broadway, radio, singer-songwriter, strings, piano, vocals, band, Garage Band, and more
-- composition: form, style; soundtracks and scoring

About Bobby

I'm a piano teacher, pianist, composer, songwriter, singer, and lifetime music lover in beautiful Los Angeles, California. I began playing piano at age 7 and was forever smitten with learning music!

I progressed rapidly and by high school I was winning multiple competitions and talent shows and performed as a featured artist with local youth orchestras in Corpus Christi, Texas. When I was 16, I began teaching piano and music theory to my peers and to kids. Then it was off to Austin where at the University of Texas I studied composition (piano principal under Dr. Betty Mallard) and wrote and
arranged for keys (of course) as well as voice, strings, and choral groups I sang in.

I'm a fun, laid-back person and my teaching style reflects that. However I thrive on doing things the right way and reinforcing that in a positive way. This applies to both kids and adults!

Being a musician is a tremendous feeling and my goal is help others become better musicians and have fun doing it!

*** Lesson Details ***
FIRST LESSON: We will about your experience with music, music theory, piano, any other instruments, and what kind of music you're interested in learning. Any style is OK!

We'll talk about your practicing commitment and your space at home - do you have a piano or a keyboard?

Once I've assessed these things, we can start some exercises then I can give you some fun assignments.

If you have certain music in mind you'd like to learn, please bring those ideas or sheet music.

WHAT ARE OTHER LESSONS LIKE?

You and I discuss your progress or roadblocks since last time and any questions you had. No doubt you experienced a combination of inspirations and frustrations - that's normal.

We'll warm up with scales and exercises if you have not already, then jump into the material.

*** Studio Equipment ***

I used to think that songwriting and composition was beyond me, that it was a gift only some people had and I wasn't one of the lucky ones. I mean, I had sung in chorus some and had taken piano as a kid, but I couldn't crack the code. When I started piano back up again as a lark with Bobby and then expressed my interest in songwriting, I wasn't expecting much from myself to be honest. After all, who was I kidding? But, Bobby really helped to decrypt the structure of songwriting for me and little by little, I started to really get the hang of it. From just the basic four chord pop tune to adding in some more unexpected choices, I'm totally that singer-songwriter I always embarrassingly envisioned in my head. And, he's been great with the vocals as well, helping me to know what works for my body and providing concrete tips for the kind of singing I want to do. Top-notch guy, definitely check him out.

I took a 35+ year break from piano lessons and was a little nervous to attempt it again. But Bobby made me feel very comfortable right off the bat and has been a great instructor. Very personable and extremely patient (and I'm sure my indelicate pounding has taxed that patience at times). His studio is well set-up and comfortable, and he really knows what he is talking about. Highly recommended!

I took voice lessons from Mary Ann at Groovin' On Music from 2007-2009, and they were worth every penny. I was a background singer in a worship team at church and I was shy to sing lead because I didn't know how to sing vibrato or navigate the falsetto break in my range. I had always wanted to take lessons as a kid but never was able to until adulthood. I was a bit nervous when I first came in, but Mary Ann put me at ease. She is a beautiful spirit who inspired me, challenged me, and made me laugh. She is not only amazingly talented and experienced, but she genuinely loves people and makes the lessons an enjoyable experience. Mary Ann definitely took my voice to the next level. Many people have commented on the difference in my voice and my confidence level before and after the lessons. I now sing lead, am at home with my vibrato and know how to use all the notes in my range. I would absolutely recommend Mary Ann as a voice coach for people of all ages!
