Kolja G.

Brooklyn, NY

I divide my lessons into technique (mostly done on a practice pad) and coordination (playing drums).
Learning the rudiments is essential for any drum set player or a percussionist. First, I focus on getting a nice clean single roll, double roll and a buzz roll which are the building blocks of all styles of drumming.
Once the student masters that he will be able to play with a nice feel and groove and have a natural approach to the drums so he can express himself effortless and with ease.
It will be lots of fun and you will groove with a smile on your face!

About Kolja

Kolja is a versatile drummer/percussionist that has been actively playing/teaching/recording for the last 20 years of his life.
He teaches at his studio in Williamsburg.
He has studied Jazz drumming at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Europe. Although trained as a western drummer, studying with the Indian master drummer Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, has given him insight how to teach rhythm and make it a fun process.
The joy and the excitement while playing is what Kolja focuses is on. How to groove effortless and with ease is what he teaches!

Kolja is an incredible percussionist/drummer with the kind of patience you have to have when teaching. I have some musical ability, but have never played the drums or any type of percussion. Kola has a very nurturing approach to teaching which makes learning both fun and challenging. I highly recommend him

The guy gives you all the information necessary for a professional drummer. Excellent approach! Discusses your current skills and takes it from there. Checks your coordination, your sticks/hands work and tells you what you need to work on; he gives you a demo how you can develop some basic ideas into real drumming. If you want to learn, improve and understand what and how you play, don't hesitate and just contact Kolja.

Paul W.

Brooklyn, NY

I teach all styles and levels of drumming! Focus on listening, playing along to songs and recordings, groove, time keeping, technique and reading. Some discussion of music theory and history. I tailor my lessons to meet each individual student’s needs and expectations. I encourage students to bring their favorite songs and we usually end up working with those. I also like using songs by The Beatles as they provide a perfect (fun and familiar) platform to learn many different aspects of drumming and musical performance.

About Paul

As a teacher (and also father) Paul finds great joy in sharing his experience and insight with the next generation of creative musicians. For many years, he has taught drummers and percussionists of all ages and levels in academic settings as well as privately. He has also taught workshops and masterclasses at several renowned venues and music conservatories while touring with bands throughout Europe (Royal Academy of Music, London UK; Hull University, Hull UK; Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood, Paris FR).
Playing music has always been a part of Paul's life. Growing up in a family of musici
ans, he started playing cello at age 6 and he's been playing drums since age 8. After an extensive classical tutelage at the Music Conservatory in Esch/Alzette (Luxembourg) and at various music workshops throughout the world, he completed both undergraduate and graduate studies at Manhattan School of Music, learning from the likes of John Riley, David Liebman, Samir Chatterjee & Michael Abene.
Paul has since been able to make a name for himself among the local and international music industry as an accomplished drummer and forward-thinking composer. He has performed at several international festivals (North Sea Jazz Festival) and at some of the world's most prestigious jazz clubs in the US and overseas. Paul has appeared alongside such emerging stars as David Binney, Linda Oh, Ambrose Akinmusire, Will Vinson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno and Tim Collins.

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether my students are young or old, taking lessons as a hobby or wish to pursue a career in music, I tailor my lessons to meet each individual student’s needs and expectations.
I have a lot of fun teaching and I want you or your child to have fun during our lessons.
My students learn music in the most natural and intuitive way possible. I try to build on what the student already likes, listens to and has a passion for. I encourage students to bring their favorite songs and we usually end up working with those. I also like using songs by The Beatles as they provide a perfect (fun and familiar) platform to learn many different aspects of drumming and musical performance.
In addition to being a drummer and percussionist, I have a strong background in music theory and I want to make sure my students not only know how to play their instrument, but also become familiar with reading and writing music.
After a few months in the studio, you or your child can expect to have a better understanding of music and have acquired the basic tools and techniques which will allow you to play your favorite pieces of music.

Paul is great teacher. My 7 year old son and I have been taking lessons with Paul for several months and I'm very please with the progress that we have both made. Paul has done a great job at tailoring my son's and my lessons to reflect the difference in age, skill, and musical interests. He has taught us fundamentals and technique but has also incorporated songs into the lessons, which is helping us build skill, while making it more fun. I would recommend him both for kids and adults. He has a great personality and is very patient, responsible, and puntual.

I have little musical training and absolutely no experience playing the drums but thought it would be a fun thing to do in my free time. I'm 31 and did not have high expectations that I would be able to handle even basic 3-limbed coordination. After sitting down with Paul once, it was a happy revelation to find out that I was actually capable of learning. He is patient & observant. For a beginner like me, he does a good job of structuring incremental exercises, while simultaneously finding songs at my level, so I could learn to play a song from beginning to end after only a few lessons. He's good at keeping me on track and encouraging me to practice. I feel lucky that my first experience learning the drums has been with such a great teacher!

Paul is an awesome teacher! I began taking drum lessons on a whim and had 0 experience/ former knowledge about drumming. He has taught me so much in very little time and made it extremely dynamic and fun. I look forward to my lessons each week because I always feel accomplished at the end. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

Andrei P.

Matawan, NJ

I have played and studied drums as a secondary instrument for quiet sometime. I have had some accomplished drum students.

I teach all the basic rudiments and have a strong focus on learning beats by ear. I like to teach my drum students to read and do rolls with a strong concentration on the snare drum.

About Andrei

Teaching music is my passion, it is more than just a career. I value each student and the time I have with them; helping them to explore the world of music. Hopefully after each lesson, my students walk away with a deeper understanding of music theory and have enjoyed their time. I am available to teach Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Classical Guitar, Bass, Upright Bass, Banjo, Ukulele, Mandolin, Piano, and beginner Drums.

I am a husband and father. I teach all age ranges.

*** Lesson Details ***
I approach each lesson differently because every student is unique. During the initial
lesson I will begin to assess the student's ability, determine the best teaching technique for them, and setup a practicing at home guideline. My job is to help the student reach their individual goals and support them along the way. I feel every student deserves to learn to read music and I will concentrate on this with them.

Lessons are taught in my personal music studio; it is a laid-back, family friendly environment. There may be specific books and supplies I recommend purchasing (these will enhance the success of a budding musician). I will most likely also hand out sheet music of songs to practice and may recommend certain artists within specific genres for the students to listen to and familiarize themselves with.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Classical/Flamenco guitar. I can teach many different styles such as Rock, Blues, Jazz, etc. I am always learning, and am willing to learn so that my students get the best experience possible.

Please go to my experience column

*** Lesson Details ***
Through my methods of teaching a student could excel, learn, and become an accomplish musician at any age. I work within the age group that is, to teach in the level of that student instead of above them.I have help students to get into bands and become songwriters. I show students how to practice within 15 minutes and become productive in ideas and have fun in the process all ages could have fun. I am one of those individuals who love to teach music and my reward is when you learn and feel good about your studies in the instrument so my last words to conclude in all of this is “have fun and enjoy the beauty of music.”

I am emphatic about learning music I cover all the grounds in music such as theory the basics to harmony and my favorite songwriting and get you to play what you like
I have worked with all ages and the one thing I know in the beginning is to make that student feel comfortable and to get the attention from that student so they can learn, play, and most importantly have fun with it.
I show students time management in their studies how to practice in such a little time I plan each lesson and if the lesson is not right for that day I quickly go into a second plan. I can always detect if the plan does not go well because there is one thing a teacher must know and that is to teach in the level of the student and not beyond so they can succeed properly and move on to the next level.

Having taken guitar lessons as a kid myself I know the importance of having a patient passionate teacher Dr. Vincent possesses all those qualities and more. A qualified teacher, with a PhD, who knows his stuff but is also able to break down his vast knowledge into bits that even a middle schooler could understand. My son is excelling at his base guitar thanks to Dr. Vincent and is developing a love for his instrument I hadn't expected.

I have been taking lessons with Jimmy for years now for music theory, acoustic guitar, singing, recording, and now songwriting. Its awesome to have all those options in one place. Jimmy has a lot of experience when it comes to writing songs and it shows in the way he teaches. He always shows excitement towards the new songs I bring to him, and encourages me to keep writing. He has taught me how easy it can be to create songs, while taking what he has taught me with music theory to push the song to the next level. The best part is when I decide I like a song, he has the ability to record it for me in his studio. This process of recording and listening to what you have created is invaluable. I always look forward to lessons with Jimmy and highly recommend him.

I've been taking acoustic guitar lessons with Jimmy for a year and a half. When I started with Jimmy, I had no music theory background... none. I know I still have a lot more to learn, but now I am familiar with concepts including modes, constructing the diatonic major scale, sharps and flats, the circle of fourths and fifths... the list goes on. Jimmy has even guided me through transposing a chord progression. I could go on, but to summarize, because of Jimmy's teaching style, willingness to answer questions, and music knowledge, I now know a lot about how music works. :-)

As Jim states on his bio, he teaches from age 8 and up. I'm one of his "up" students who's been playing guitar for a few years, but never took time to learn theory because I thought it was too confusing or difficult to learn. After being stuck in a rut for the past 30 years, I finally realized that I could be a guitar player, instead of just playing guitar, by understanding WHY I'm playing what I playing. I planned to take a few lessons to see how it would go. That was 4 months ago. Now when I pick up my guitar, I have a plan and am excited to learn more each week. Jim's approach to teaching theory makes it clear for anyone of any age or expertise. If you're young and want to learn the right way, Jim will teach you the right way. For us older folks, I found out you CAN teach an old dog new tricks... I highly recommend Jimmy!
