The study of classical guitar is not for the faint of heart! classical study requires discipline, devotion, commitment, and serious study. .
Classical guitar instruction can build a great base of technique fundamentals for people who go on to study other styles, such as Jazz or Blues.
Hello! My name is David, and I am a music teacher of many different subjects. These include guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, recording, music theory, production, composition and film music composition. All styles, and all ages. Classical, Rock, Alternative, Blues, Jazz, and more! I have a Masters Degree in music from The University of Melbourne in Australia, as well as having the distinction of a Bachelors Degree in Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. I am one of the 16% of people who attended Cornish that actually graduated from their school. I have been playing guitar since I was 14 and I have not looked back since. I love music and I love helping other people discover the joys it can bring. In college I studied classical guitar and got experience playing in many different groups. I currently perform in and around the Seattle area. *** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to each individual student, to their interests and needs. I generally use the Hal Leonard Guitar method but I will use any method best suited for the goals you want to reach. Whatever method we use will be supplemented with other songs and exercises. My lessons tend to be laid back and fun but also challenging. I expect students to do their best and make an effort. *** Studio Equipment *** The lessons are taught in my studio with an amp, ...
Classical requires a lot of patience. Here we will learn how to read music, finger picking, and theory.
It’s not the stage, it’s not the glory: it’s the pure joy of playing music. We often put musicians on a pedestal: “this guy’s better than I am, I’ll never be that good.” Here’s a quote from one of the best guitarist of our time: “I dedicated all the time I had to it. The 10 hour workout was just what I put in the magazine at the time, but for me it was every waking moment.” ~ Steve Vai To Steve, it was the music that gave him great joy. Simply put, he played because he loved it. This is my goal as a teacher: to show people that music takes time, it takes determination, it takes passion, and most importantly, it’s really fun! It can be an expression of who you are. “The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.” ~ B.B. King “Every time you pick up ...
This is where I sort of apologize in advance for being somewhat dogmatic. In my own experience (and humble opinion), learning the classical guitar should be your first effort. The reasons are many. The main one being that the "guitar", as it's known in the contemporary west, begun its evolution from a classical birth.
What is more, the guitar was organized and structured in playing classical music. Francisco Tárrega would be the person credited for this. Indeed, Tarrega structured the guitar into a legitimate language and craft. This century old organizational craft has given birth to such notables as: Andrés Segovia, Moreno Torroba, Manuel Ponce, Luiz Bonfá, and Leo Brouwer. Certainly the list goes on....
When learning the classical guitar, as ones first introduction to learning music, it provides many key intensives.
First, it provides a written educational structure/form. A structure/form that's unknown to any style or genres of the guitar.
Indeed as a kid, I was simply blown away as to how music showcases almost endless stimulating possibilities. This in terms of structure, different genres, discordance, harmony, tamber, melody and rhythm. For it would be these very profound attributes noticed back then that sustain me today. As a young aspiring musician, "universal" would be last words out of an poor observers mouth. This especially when describing my several attempts in playing speed metal on my sisters viola. It would be these sort of behaviors that summoned my father to buy his resourceful son a electric guitar and amp. The rest was history. A history plagued with disturbing reverberations along my parents bedroom walls and garage doors. This while placing a heavy burden on their pocket books in begging for ...
