Singing Lessons in San Francisco

By Margaret G. - San Francisco Voice Teacher

Hi everyone! My name is Margaret and I am a classically trained singer and voice teacher currently living in the heart of beautiful San Francisco. I am somewhat new to San Francisco, but am already feeling settled in and enjoying every moment. And there is much to enjoy about San Francisco! The weather is fun and unpredictable, every neighborhood portrays a distinct style and personality, and the food is delicious and unforgettable. Above all this, what I enjoy most about San Francisco are the people. Everyone I have met exhibits a strong passion for the arts, music, and performance. There is also an expectation of high quality work, which I take pride in being a part of and I hope you will too!

The musical diversity in San Francisco became apparent to me during the first month after my m
ove. The city is bursting with music styles ranging from heavy metal to professional opera. What a treat for any explorer of music, especially those taking singing lessons in San Francisco! There are opportunities around every corner of the city. One only needs to put their musical passion forward and discover what they are capable of.

My passion for vocal performance is strong, and that is why I enjoy singing and sharing my knowledge and skills with others by teaching singing lessons in San Francisco. I believe music is an important and valuable part of any child or young adult’s developmental growth, and a benefit to any mature adult who wants their voice to be heard. Good luck with your musical growth as you begin your journey of taking singing lessons in San Francisco!

Tracey H. San Francisco, CA

I've been singing for 17 years and have taught a wide range of students. I'm confident we can build a custom-fit program for your voice to address your unique strengths, challenges, and areas of growth.

About Tracey

I've been singing, performing, songwriting, and studying voice for 17 years. I attended Berklee College of Music, where I studied Voice/Vocal Performance, and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from Musician's Institute in LA. I've been teaching since 2006, and work with a wide range of contemporary genres with a focus on rock, pop, country, folk, Americana, R&B, blues, and soul. I like to take a "back-to-basics" approach to voice by helping students develop the core aspects of breathing/breath control, correct vowel placement/vowel tuning, and a focus on muscle memory as it relates to stretching the cords. I've been told my approach is simple yet effective, and a unique blend of classic concepts with a practical/modern approach to getting in tune with one's one ...

One amazing teacher!

Tracey is a phenomenal voice teacher and I highly recommend her! She's organized, professional and very musically talented. But more than that, Tracey is extremely adept at communicating the subtle and hard to grasp vocal techniques that are so difficult to put into words. In addition to using analogies, she's great at using visual cues (drawings, arrows, notation# and relating vocal movements to colors, physical movements and sensations. She was more than willing to adapt her lessons for me so that I can gain the best understanding.

I have had other teachers in the past, and while they were all talented and very nice, only Tracey has been able to help me improve my singing voice. I improved more in 3 lessons with her than I did in 8 months of lessons with a previous teacher.

Tracey is also very kind and patient #very necessary with beginners!) and very good at correcting without criticizing. She went way out of her way to accomodate my schedule and even comes to my house for the lessons. I think she's the best and I'm sure you will too!
Sam M. Oakland, CA

I've been teaching voice for over 10 years from young kids to adults. I believe in a generous, caring, but driven approach to teaching music. Providing a comfortable and supportive environment is critical to a steady and satisfying progression. Each student has unique strengths and weaknesses so as a teacher I understand the importance of tailoring a lesson to the specific needs of the student. Some people want to learn theory, some people want to learn technique. It's important to focus on the student's goals so they can get the most reward and satisfaction from it.

About Sam

I've been playing music all of my life, from rock bands in high school to studying orchestral music at Berklee College of Music. I love creating music and helping others create their own music as well. Whether it's playing live, writing songs or recording in the studio, I'll jump at any chance to help students share their music with others. *** Lesson Details *** I believe in a generous, caring, but driven approach to teaching music. I am very glad that I found a good teacher. Perfect for me, perfect for anybody who wants to sing professionally. Teacher Audrey is very professional, nice and artistic. She explains what's the logic behind and what's going on when we sing as well as singing practice. So far I have only had three classes but I feel more confident and it improves the quality of my everyday life as well. Being taught by Audrey is helping tremendously not only singing but also other areas as well. If you need a singing teacher she is number one.

Angel is a dream! At our first lesson I told Angel that I couldn't even sing Happy Birthday, he calmly and patiently assured me that I could and by the end of our first lesson I was singing a Gloria Estefan song. It was kind of magical. Angel makes you feel 100% a home and comfortable so you can focus on the singing.

Have you seen conservatory conductor-teacher Fletcher rip into jazz drummer-student Andy in the movie Whiplash? Famous quotes: "Were you rushing or dragging?", "There are no two words in the English language more harmful than 'good job'."

Thankfully, Jackie is in NO way like Fletcher. She's kind and very encouraging, though firm and exacting at the same time. She will not say 'good job' if you don't deserve it. If you've seen her youtube piano and singing videos, you know that she comes from an impeccable classical background, so understandably her standard is very high. She doesn't tolerate 'sloppy' playing. I've been studying with her for 6 months plus, and I'm still trying to earn a star on my drop-rolls. I'm also still struggling to maintain a technique that does not vacillate between legato and staccato when doing scales with a metronome.

Before coming to Jackie, I could not read sheet music, and can only 'play by ear' (improvise) the melody/accompaniment while reading lyrics and chords from sites such as ultimate-guitar. I tried all kinds of software and apps, including 'Playground Sessions' and 'Piano Marvel' but with limited success. However, I just recently tried the new 'Flowkey' webapp, and was pleasantly surprised to see that I can now handle some of the beginner and intermediate level sheet music.

Here's a youtube video of some of us, her students, performing in our piano/voice recital: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r01ElWcOVmg

There's just no substitute to a real great personal teacher like Jackie, who can not only guide you, but ultimately motivate and inspire you.

Strategies for Sight Singing
It may seem like instrumentalists have it much easier when it comes to sight reading music; by simply pressing a key or a string, the notes are immediately available to them without any additional thought, and all that’s left to them is to work out duration, dynamics, and tempo. Singers, on the other hand, don't have an instrument to rely on. Taking a song previously unknown to you and delivering a reasonably accurate performance the very first run-through isn’t a talent that everybody has.
