Singing Lessons in San Francisco

By Margaret G. - San Francisco Voice Teacher

Hi everyone! My name is Margaret and I am a classically trained singer and voice teacher currently living in the heart of beautiful San Francisco. I am somewhat new to San Francisco, but am already feeling settled in and enjoying every moment. And there is much to enjoy about San Francisco! The weather is fun and unpredictable, every neighborhood portrays a distinct style and personality, and the food is delicious and unforgettable. Above all this, what I enjoy most about San Francisco are the people. Everyone I have met exhibits a strong passion for the arts, music, and performance. There is also an expectation of high quality work, which I take pride in being a part of and I hope you will too!

The musical diversity in San Francisco became apparent to me during the first month after my move. The city is bursting with music styles ranging from heavy metal to professional opera. What a treat for any explorer of music, especially those taking singing lessons in San Francisco! There are opportunities around every corner of the city. One only needs to put their musical passion forward and discover what they are capable of.

My passion for vocal performance is strong, and that is why I enjoy singing and sharing my knowledge and skills with others by teaching singing lessons in San Francisco. I believe music is an important and valuable part of any child or young adult’s developmental growth, and a benefit to any mature adult who wants their voice to be heard. Good luck with your musical growth as you begin your journey of taking singing lessons in San Francisco!

Tracey H.

San Francisco, CA

I've been singing for 17 years and have taught a wide range of students. I'm confident we can build a custom-fit program for your voice to address your unique strengths, challenges, and areas of growth.

About Tracey

I've been singing, performing, songwriting, and studying voice for 20 years. I attended Berklee College of Music, where I studied Voice/Vocal Performance, and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from Musician's Institute in LA. I've been teaching since 2006, and work with a wide range of contemporary genres with a focus on rock, pop, country, folk, Americana, R&B, blues, and soul. I like to take a "back-to-basics" approach to voice by helping students develop the core aspects of breathing/breath control, correct vowel placement/vowel tuning, and a focus on muscle memory as
it relates to stretching the cords. I've been told my approach is simple yet effective, and a unique blend of classic concepts with a practical/modern approach to getting in tune with one's own unique voice. Currently a gigging musician and songwriter in SF, I am in the trenches alongside many of my students, which gives me a unique perspective and empathy for the many stages of personal and career development as a musician. I have a lot of first-hand experience with the music business and what it means to manage a band and a DIY-career. Another area I specialize in (and which is probably the nearest to my heart!), is performance anxiety. Having overcome performance anxiety myself and gone on to be a bandleader and gigging musician, I have a close relationship to this and take a special interest in helping students overcome their own fears and anxieties, identify their own voice and identity as a singer, and taking the steps to develop that.

Mostly, I aim to debunk the mystery that the voice can be shrouded in, and change it from being elusive and temperamental to something that students can feel in control-of and at-ease with. I've taught a wide range of students, from young kids to a Marine (true story!), so am comfortable dealing with an equally-wide range of goals and voices.

*** Lesson Details ***
Well, my students tell me that I have the unique advantage of "being young/in touch with the real-world of the music business, but with real professional training and chops." That's about as good as I could have said it, I suppose! I like to pull from all the different facets of my experience and background to inform me as an instructor: formal education and training, as well as my first-hand experiences with my own band, my own struggles with performance anxiety, and my discovery of my own voice through the very methods I now teach to my students.
What that means for you is that rather than focus on a rigid set of rules, we'll focus on your voice and custom-fit a program that is built from solid vocal technique coupled with specific tools to help you develop your own voice and style. I do truly believe in building a solid foundation for you to build your voice upon, but am unconventional in that I believe the best way to learn to sing is by breaking down what is actually going on in there- in a way that students can understand and interpret themselves. Nerd alert: Vocal technique can actually quite liberating and fun! Yes, we will teach you how to breathe correctly; yes, you will be singing scales. But the key is that you'll know why you're singing each note, and what is going to get you to sing those notes more effectively. I believe in hard work because the voice is a musical instrument; but I also believe in making it easily digestible and fun.

In our lessons, you'll learn how to breathe correctly, test your vocal range, and start working on strengthening your head and chest voices to achieve some continuity in your range. We'll also develop the mask and what I like to call your "vendor voice." Oh yeah- it's good stuff. You'll have warm-ups and scales you can use on your own time to get ready for a gig or to continue strengthening the muscles.

*** Studio Equipment ***
PA/monitors, keyboard, microphones.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If I am traveling to you, I bring a laptop and small set of speakers on which to play recorded scales and pull up songs for song work. I also have a portable digital recorder to record lessons if that is desired.

*** Specialties ***
I have experience with a wide range of styles, but my main genres of focus are rock, pop, Americana, country, blues, soul, and R&B.
I specialize in vowel tuning/correct vowel placement as a way to strengthen the muscles of the voice, in order to correct pitch/tone and solidify muscle memory as it relates to the voice as instrument. I teach from a "ground-up" approach, meaning I feel it's crucial for my students to understand how their voice works, why it works in certain ways, and how they can use vocal technique to their advantage as singers and performers. Building upon that strong foundation, I customize a program for each of my students to address their own set of strengths and challenges.

Expand your range and power! Learn to communicate lyrics with confidence and effectiveness. Find the type of music that is just right for your voice. Get over your fears about singing! Or learn to write your own songs!

About Nick

I am a professional musician and songwriter, who teaches voice, piano, guitar and songwriting. I've been performing, composing and recording since I was very young, and I have a bachelor's degree in music from UC Santa Cruz. I have released two full albums of original music, and am currently working on my third. I've performed professionally in New York, Los Angeles, and all over the Bay Area. I started teaching in 2005 when I was a music student at UCSC, and haven't looked back! My students have performed at clubs and concert venues, studied at schools such as the Conservatory of Vocal and In
strumental Arts, Oakland School of the Arts, and UC Santa Cruz. And some have made beautiful, original recordings of their own. I enjoy working with children and adults alike.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am easy going and friendly, and I've found that the first step toward success is building a great rapport with my students. We begin by assessing where you are and where you want to be. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.

I always encourages students to perform, no matter how big or small the venue. I hold regular studio recitals for all of my students. But this could also mean joining a choir, going to an open mic, or even preparing your own recital or show. I often records my students, or help them gain the skills to make recordings themselves. Music is for sharing!

Nick has been teaching my daughter (age 10) piano for the past 7 months and I could not be more pleased! I'll start by saying that my daughter had never before taken lessons and, to be certain, was a reluctant student at the onset. That said, she is progressing at an incredible pace under Nick's weekly instruction, and is genuinely loving the experience. In fact, I no longer have to remind her to practice each day, as she sits to play piano whenever she has free time!

Nick comes to our home every week, is punctual, flexible in scheduling, and always brings a warm smile, lots of encouragement, and a captivating variety of songs for my daughter to learn. He is truly wonderful with children (that magical balance of supportive and challenging), and is able to adeptly incorporate my daughter's individual learning style into his lessons.

I highly recommend Nick as an instructor and feel so grateful to have him supporting my daughter's musical education.

I believe that the most important in singing is the opportunity to use your voice the way you want and feel in order to express yourself. No matter what style are you singing the vocal technique is fundamental.
My students develop technique, voice strength and vocal range, so they are able to express themselves as artists in various musical styles depending on their personalities.

Olga was announced the Best Leading Female Singer in North East in season 2006-2007 by Opera Online.
A native of Russia, she appeared on the stages of the Bolshoi Opera (Maria in Mazeppa, Prilepa in Pique Dame, Brigitta in Iolanta, Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, Musetta in La Boheme, to name a few), Kazan Opera Theater (Mimi in La Boheme), Stanislavsky Opera Theater (Micaela in Carmen), and Malmo Opera Theater in Sweden (Musetta) before emigrating to the U.S.A., where she appeared with Hawaii Opera Teater as Mimi in La Boheme, San Francisco Lyric Opera in title role of Aida, West Bay Opera and DiCapo Opera in New York in the title role of Manon Lescaut, Opera San Jose and Illinois Opera Theater as Tosca, and with Cedar Rapids Opera, Gold Coast Opera,Golden Gate Opera and Opera North as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, with San Francisco Opera Merola Program and Tampa Opera as Musetta in La Boheme. Olga transformed my technique completely! She's got a lot of experience and knows exactly how to help me find the right technique using various ways to explain, such as the physical and physiological side, as well as more imaginative and creative explanations that I could easily relate to. I enjoyed the lessons very much because I felt I was achieving something new every lesson. Will definitely take more lessons with Olga in the future!

Emily T.

San Francisco, CA

I teach Classical voice, pop, rock, jazz and musical theater.

About Emily

I provide a fun, supportive and creative environment for my students, exploring music with enthusiasm and finding new ways of approaching the voice to facilitate a healthy technique.

I teach students of all ages and levels, and all musical genres. I believe that in order to sing any kind of repertoire (whether it be rock or opera), you first need to understand and work on the fundamental principles of singing; body alignment, breath support and a clear, resonant tone.

Originally from Gainesville, Florida, I started studying piano at the age of 6 and then started voice lessons around t
he age of 8. I started mainly with musical theater and pop music, and it wasn't until high school that I left Gainesville to pursue a more rigorous arts education at Interlochen Arts Academy. There, I discovered my love for opera and classical music, and then went on to receive my Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory, and my Master of Music from San Francisco Conservatory.

Studying and performing music has been such an integral part of my life, and I have a lot of enthusiasm and energy to teach aspiring musicians!

I appreciated how quickly he was able to discern my current range and where I could 'grow'. He shared some new warm up techniques with me that were very, very helpful.
