Singing Lessons in San Francisco

By Margaret G. - San Francisco Voice Teacher

Hi everyone! My name is Margaret and I am a classically trained singer and voice teacher currently living in the heart of beautiful San Francisco. I am somewhat new to San Francisco, but am already feeling settled in and enjoying every moment. And there is much to enjoy about San Francisco! The weather is fun and unpredictable, every neighborhood portrays a distinct style and personality, and the food is delicious and unforgettable. Above all this, what I enjoy most about San Francisco are the people. Everyone I have met exhibits a strong passion for the arts, music, and performance. There is also an expectation of high quality work, which I take pride in being a part of and I hope you will too!

The musical diversity in San Francisco became apparent to me during the first month after my move. The city is bursting with music styles ranging from heavy metal to professional opera. What a treat for any explorer of music, especially those taking singing lessons in San Francisco! There are opportunities around every corner of the city. One only needs to put their musical passion forward and discover what they are capable of.

My passion for vocal performance is strong, and that is why I enjoy singing and sharing my knowledge and skills with others by teaching singing lessons in San Francisco. I believe music is an important and valuable part of any child or young adult’s developmental growth, and a benefit to any mature adult who wants their voice to be heard. Good luck with your musical growth as you begin your journey of taking singing lessons in San Francisco!

Tracey H.

San Francisco, CA

I've been singing for 17 years and have taught a wide range of students. I'm confident we can build a custom-fit program for your voice to address your unique strengths, challenges, and areas of growth.

About Tracey

I've been singing, performing, songwriting, and studying voice for 20 years. I attended Berklee College of Music, where I studied Voice/Vocal Performance, and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from Musician's Institute in LA. I've been teaching since 2006, and work with a wide range of contemporary genres with a focus on rock, pop, country, folk, Americana, R&B, blues, and soul. I like to take a "back-to-basics" approach to voice by helping students develop the core aspects of breathing/breath control, correct vowel placement/vowel tuning, and a focus on muscle memory as
it relates to stretching the cords. I've been told my approach is simple yet effective, and a unique blend of classic concepts with a practical/modern approach to getting in tune with one's own unique voice. Currently a gigging musician and songwriter in SF, I am in the trenches alongside many of my students, which gives me a unique perspective and empathy for the many stages of personal and career development as a musician. I have a lot of first-hand experience with the music business and what it means to manage a band and a DIY-career. Another area I specialize in (and which is probably the nearest to my heart!), is performance anxiety. Having overcome performance anxiety myself and gone on to be a bandleader and gigging musician, I have a close relationship to this and take a special interest in helping students overcome their own fears and anxieties, identify their own voice and identity as a singer, and taking the steps to develop that.

Mostly, I aim to debunk the mystery that the voice can be shrouded in, and change it from being elusive and temperamental to something that students can feel in control-of and at-ease with. I've taught a wide range of students, from young kids to a Marine (true story!), so am comfortable dealing with an equally-wide range of goals and voices.

*** Lesson Details ***
Well, my students tell me that I have the unique advantage of "being young/in touch with the real-world of the music business, but with real professional training and chops." That's about as good as I could have said it, I suppose! I like to pull from all the different facets of my experience and background to inform me as an instructor: formal education and training, as well as my first-hand experiences with my own band, my own struggles with performance anxiety, and my discovery of my own voice through the very methods I now teach to my students.
What that means for you is that rather than focus on a rigid set of rules, we'll focus on your voice and custom-fit a program that is built from solid vocal technique coupled with specific tools to help you develop your own voice and style. I do truly believe in building a solid foundation for you to build your voice upon, but am unconventional in that I believe the best way to learn to sing is by breaking down what is actually going on in there- in a way that students can understand and interpret themselves. Nerd alert: Vocal technique can actually quite liberating and fun! Yes, we will teach you how to breathe correctly; yes, you will be singing scales. But the key is that you'll know why you're singing each note, and what is going to get you to sing those notes more effectively. I believe in hard work because the voice is a musical instrument; but I also believe in making it easily digestible and fun.

In our lessons, you'll learn how to breathe correctly, test your vocal range, and start working on strengthening your head and chest voices to achieve some continuity in your range. We'll also develop the mask and what I like to call your "vendor voice." Oh yeah- it's good stuff. You'll have warm-ups and scales you can use on your own time to get ready for a gig or to continue strengthening the muscles.

*** Studio Equipment ***
PA/monitors, keyboard, microphones.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If I am traveling to you, I bring a laptop and small set of speakers on which to play recorded scales and pull up songs for song work. I also have a portable digital recorder to record lessons if that is desired.

*** Specialties ***
I have experience with a wide range of styles, but my main genres of focus are rock, pop, Americana, country, blues, soul, and R&B.
I specialize in vowel tuning/correct vowel placement as a way to strengthen the muscles of the voice, in order to correct pitch/tone and solidify muscle memory as it relates to the voice as instrument. I teach from a "ground-up" approach, meaning I feel it's crucial for my students to understand how their voice works, why it works in certain ways, and how they can use vocal technique to their advantage as singers and performers. Building upon that strong foundation, I customize a program for each of my students to address their own set of strengths and challenges.

Tracey is so good at making you feel comfortable. Obviously singing in front of someone, especially while they are critiquing you, is something that scares a lot of people and might make them shy away from taking lessons, but Tracey is the coolest person ever and in the handful of lessons I've had so far she makes me feel more comfortable and confident each time. I highly recommend her!!

One amazing teacher!

Tracey is a phenomenal voice teacher and I highly recommend her! She's organized, professional and very musically talented. But more than that, Tracey is extremely adept at communicating the subtle and hard to grasp vocal techniques that are so difficult to put into words. In addition to using analogies, she's great at using visual cues (drawings, arrows, notation# and relating vocal movements to colors, physical movements and sensations. She was more than willing to adapt her lessons for me so that I can gain the best understanding.

I have had other teachers in the past, and while they were all talented and very nice, only Tracey has been able to help me improve my singing voice. I improved more in 3 lessons with her than I did in 8 months of lessons with a previous teacher.

Tracey is also very kind and patient #very necessary with beginners!) and very good at correcting without criticizing. She went way out of her way to accomodate my schedule and even comes to my house for the lessons. I think she's the best and I'm sure you will too!

Arrica R.

Oakland, CA

I began singing at a very young age for anyone who would listen and began taking music and voice lessons shortly thereafter. I am a USC graduate and have also studied music privately for over 20 years as well as at the Vocal Power Academy of Los Angeles. My main musical styles that I perform and teach are Pop, Rock, Folk, and Americana/Country but I also have a background in Musical Theater. I specialize in creating a lesson plan that suits the needs and skill set of each individual student.

About Arrica

I was born and raised in Los Angeles but I've just recently relocated to the Bay Area. I am a Professional Musician/Songwriter/Vocalist teaching songwriting, voice, and performance technique as well as a combination thereof. I began singing at a very young age for anyone who would listen (so my parents tell me) and began taking music lessons shortly thereafter. I am now a USC graduate and have also studied music privately for over 25 years as well as at the esteemed Vocal Power Institute. I've professionally released several albums and I am grateful to have had my music featured/licensed by
Starbucks, NBC, The CW network, NikeWomen.com, and MTV. I've toured extensively playing to audiences across the country and have had the honor of sharing the stage with artists ranging from Conor Oberst, Inara George, Johnette Napolitano, Martha Wainwright, to Jackson Browne. I have experience teaching both adults and children, and enjoy teaching beginning as well as intermediate to advanced students. In addition to teaching privately, I have experience teaching children through my volunteer work with The Girls Rock Alliance, a non-profit organization that aims to teach young girls about self-confidence and self-expression through music education.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am easy-going, friendly and I believe that developing a great student/teacher rapport is the key to making the most out of the time we spend together. The curriculum I utilize is specifically designed to meet the student's individual needs. Initially we'll spend time assessing where you are and where you'd like to be. Most importantly, we'll set goals and create a lesson plan that will allow you to attain them. We'll work on basic techniques (or intermediate to advanced depending on skill level), for example - breath support, vowel placement, posture, relaxation, the fundamentals of song structure and music theory. We'll also work on the psychology of performance and eliminating any unwanted tension that may arise. We'll choose songs to work on that you'll enjoy singing, or analyze the songs you love in order to discover and/or improve upon your own songwriting abilities.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Front music studio area w/ guitars, computer with protools, keyboard, microphone, pa system, and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a small keyboard and/or guitar

*** Specialties ***
My main musical styles that I perform and teach are Pop, Rock, Folk, and Americana/Country. I specialize in creating a lesson plan that suits the needs of each individual student.

Arrica has been such a wonderful teacher for my 11-year-old daughter. (She was 9 when she started with Arrica.) Our girl has a lot of raw talent but needed some good instruction that wasn't too formal. Africa is just the right blend of traditional singing technique and fun rock-n-roll, record your own music on Garage band. We love her!

Kristina B.

San Francisco, CA

I've been singing professionally & learning voice myself for over 25 years ~ I focus on breath control, body awareness, vocal ranges, manipulation of sounds, placement/delivery, using one's belting voice properly, performance, ear training, harmony, solfeggio, reading music if one is interested etc. I teach everything from Contemporary/Pop, R&B, & Soul to Jazz, to Punk Rock & Indie Rock to Country to Musical Theater ~ everything but full on Opera, but I did study Opera for 1 year. I love teaching Voice and helping people discover their own unique sound.

About Kristina

Kristina has been singing, acting, and performing since the age of 4. She studied under the well-known and respected vocal coach, Donna Prypin, on Cape Cod, Massachusetts for at least 11 years. Kristina then went on to study Opera with Don Wilkinson, of the Boston Symphony for 1 year, and with him gained excellent range and breathing techniques. Kristina was then accepted to Berklee College of Music, where she attended for 2 1/2 years studying under some of the world's greatest teachers. She learned extensive Ear Training, Harmony, Jazz Improvisation, Counterpoint, Arranging, Performing, Mu
sic Business, Music Therapy, and intense vocal coaching. After college Kristina went on to teach Special Education students with a specialty in using Music Therapy techniques to help students learn. She then moved to San Diego, California, where she worked as a Mental Health Practitioner for children ages 6 ~ 12, and again worked extensively with her students using Music Therapy practices.

Currently, she has released her first solo album (September 2008) titled, Mermaid Tattoos. Kristina can teach ages 4 ~ 100 and is patient, creative, flexible, enthusiastic, and passionate. She will focus especially on helping students attain their goals whether it's to be on stage winning Grammy awards, or just learning to sing and perform for fun. She can help students learn Pop, Country, Jazz, Indie Rock, Classic Rock, Musical Theater, and even their own musical genre. She also teaches guitar, and acting as well.

*** Lesson Details ***
Kristina is extremely creative, patient, kind, open-minded, passionate, laid-back, but sets excellent and attainable goals with the student, and absolutely loves music. Depending on each individual student, lessons will center around correct vocal breathing, exercises, music theory, songwriting, guitar, acting, and learning different techniques in order to meet personal goals. Each student is taught individually and with their own personal needs as the focus.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have state of the art microphones, amps, guitars, a keyboard, IPod radio (students can bring them to share music), and of course a computer.

*** Specialties ***
Voice, Guitar, Vocal Technique, Performance, Range, Improvisation, Music Theory, Songwriting. I specialize in Pop/Rock/Jazz/Country/Indie Rock and Musical Theater genres.

Olga C.

San Mateo, CA

I believe that the most important in singing is the opportunity to use your voice the way you want and feel in order to express yourself. No matter what style are you singing the vocal technique is fundamental.
My students develop technique, voice strength and vocal range, so they are able to express themselves as artists in various musical styles depending on their personalities.

About Olga

I am very excited to share great news: 2 of my students took Certificate of Merit exam this spring. Both passed with honors. They also did 99% and 100% in their Music Theory tests.

You can see Olga perform role of Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly by Puccini with West Bay Opera (Palo Alto) in May 2016.
Described by critics as "flawless in her singing" (Cultural World Bilingual ), "natural singer with beautiful colors...sings wonderfully, communicating the excesses of passion and emotion, the quick contrasts of mood , with grace and conviction" (San Jose Mercury News); possessing “a pure, str
ong soprano with phrasing of sumptuous elegance” (San Francisco Chronicle), " dazzling high notes are piercing without being ugly" (San Francisco Classical Voice), "beauty of her voice is outstanding...it has power to set the theater ringing, but it also has a wealth of color... Her stage presence...is magnetic" (Peninsula Reviews), "Her mezzo tones...evoked memories of Maria Callas' spell-binding rendition" (San Jose Mercury News),
Olga was announced the Best Leading Female Singer in North East in season 2006-2007 by Opera Online.
A native of Russia, she appeared on the stages of the Bolshoi Opera (Maria in Mazeppa, Prilepa in Pique Dame, Brigitta in Iolanta, Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, Musetta in La Boheme, to name a few), Kazan Opera Theater (Mimi in La Boheme), Stanislavsky Opera Theater (Micaela in Carmen), and Malmo Opera Theater in Sweden (Musetta) before emigrating to the U.S.A., where she appeared with Hawaii Opera Teater as Mimi in La Boheme, San Francisco Lyric Opera in title role of Aida, West Bay Opera and DiCapo Opera in New York in the title role of Manon Lescaut, Opera San Jose and Illinois Opera Theater as Tosca, and with Cedar Rapids Opera, Gold Coast Opera,Golden Gate Opera and Opera North as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, with San Francisco Opera Merola Program and Tampa Opera as Musetta in La Boheme. Emily T.

San Francisco, CA

I teach Classical voice, pop, rock, jazz and musical theater.

About Emily

I provide a fun, supportive and creative environment for my students, exploring music with enthusiasm and finding new ways of approaching the voice to facilitate a healthy technique.

I teach students of all ages and levels, and all musical genres. I believe that in order to sing any kind of repertoire (whether it be rock or opera), you first need to understand and work on the fundamental principles of singing; body alignment, breath support and a clear, resonant tone.

Originally from Gainesville, Florida, I started studying piano at the age of 6 and then started voice lessons around t
he age of 8. I started mainly with musical theater and pop music, and it wasn't until high school that I left Gainesville to pursue a more rigorous arts education at Interlochen Arts Academy. There, I discovered my love for opera and classical music, and then went on to receive my Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory, and my Master of Music from San Francisco Conservatory.

Studying and performing music has been such an integral part of my life, and I have a lot of enthusiasm and energy to teach aspiring musicians!
